Absolute belter of a car. The R32, it's dull in comparison, the noise is good but a 130i with the BMW M Performance intake and exhaust is way better.

I bought my 130i in April of 2020 and I love it. Everything you said about them in your review is correct. I do like the colour of your car better than mine, but only just. I have a white one. I actually got it by chance as they are a bit rare here in NZ. I was looking for a one series so I could run grandkids about in a 5 star rated car without spending a huge amount of money and on the day that I was heading to look at a couple of 120i's I passed a yard that had this out front. Stopped and looked and bought. Very pleased as I got the sports car I wanted as a toy, and it is a nice safe 5 door for transporting the little ones. Your comment about it being so easy to drive at slower legal speeds is also spot on. My130i is easier to drive at the legal open road, or any other, speed than my wife's X1 (3liter). And mine has 45 more horses.

I have a 130 E81 LE and it has Birds BMW suspension and Diff it has a lot going for it. If you drive it sensibly ( I know that’s hard) I get 30 plus MPG regularly. Don’t give it the beans until it is properly warm otherwise it wears the engine dramatically. Mine has 130k still pulls well and is fun on the track.

First of all: Great making and editing. You really earned that follow :) Only thing: audio of the drive by shots could be better, but that's just a tip for the future haha.
Regarding the power steering: I drive a 120i LCI and to me, it really feels a bit numb. However, I recently got to drive a 130i LCI and it was a completely different experience. I think you can really notice the engineers put some extra love in the 130i if you know what I mean :D

    • @ThatYellowDucati
      @ThatYellowDucati  Před rokem

Thanks. I really want to get back into making these. It's been a couple of years now... Audio was all recorded on the old Canon 650D Internal mic... so yeah, it was bad 👎 I've got a better set of mics and recorders now so can get better audio. I've also got better cameras now as well.
As for the power steering, since making the video, I've had chance to drive a pre-LCI. The steering did provide more feedback but at the cost of comfort. It wasn't impossible to live with day to day, but I do like the LCI steering more for daily use. And like I said in the video. Its hardly numb haha. Its more than good enough.

Great review ! Not the most powerful engine overall, but the best atmospheric engine produced by bmw in any non-M car at the time ! (Only turbocharged/compressed engines were more powerfull if you exclude M cars). It's always a pleasure to see car fans review the 130i. Nice video, I can see your heart is in the right place. That being said, there are a few things I think you could make even better:
1: Surely a similarly equipped Golf GTI would have been way way cheaper at the time, partially explaning why it was more popular? A focus probably would have been cheaper still? As I remember it, the competitive price of BMWs compared to others is a 2010 and later phenomenon? At least in my country, a 130i compared to a GTI would have been at least £10k more at the time.
2: I remember the boot space as being reasonably in line with other cars at the time. The rears seats were not very spacious though, for sure. Better than a Polo, worse than a Golf, would be my estimation.
3: Unless I misunderstood: "The most powerful engine in any non M BMW for sale at the time" ; BMW had loads of non M cars with more power, even diesels at the time... Highest power NA petrol Non M 6 cylinder, yes. But didnt you just say that? So, dont really get that one.
All in all, I like your review. Had a 123d myself, which was a bit of a sleeper tuned, if you can stand diesels. Even made a little bit more power than the 130i. Thumbs up.

    • @ThatYellowDucati

Thanks. I had a whole section on price and comparison between the Golf GTI, Focus ST and Audi S3, but it made the video quite long and I lost interest in my own voice so cut it.
And yeah, the "most powerful engine" bit is also wrong. Its the most powerful 6 cylinder engine in an none M. Not the most powerful all together. I miss understood the press release when doing my research.

Looks is subjective. I personally think the 1 series of this generation is a great looking car. As for sound, with the right exhaust mods, the N52 can sound just as good as the VR6. But yeah, the Golf is a far more sensible package. It just doesn't offer the same driving characteristics that the 130i offers. I'm glad I went this way.

The R32 is all fart no poop, on the go the 1 series will give at least 3 double deckers, even my old Audi TT MK2 spanks the R32 but performance apart, the R32 is one of the best sounding hot hatches ever made. They are both equally nice cars to own, not sure the R32 is rarer to see, better looking is down to choice but a rear wheel drive straight six is the better sports car.

Thats a good call. I've always liked them, they sound fantastic. But they are now entering the relms of Garage Queens and not really a usable daily without fear of devaluation. Prices have gone over £10k for a good one. The reason the 130i stands out to me is the whole package. Fruity engine, rear wheel drive, decent handling, and more importantly, can still be purchased for sensible money. Saying that...value is all relative to the individual.

Yes the n52 pulls like hell. But chassis is just shit.

Depends where you're from. Here in the UK. It's a hatch. Any car with a boot lid that incorporates the rear window and is hinged at the top is referred to as a hatch back.

    • @nvl2691

Hatch is short for hatchback, which is, by definition: "a car with a door across the full width at the back end that opens upwards to provide easy access for loading".
Thus, the 130i is a hatch.
