The "Kitty" monologues were always my favourite part of "Victoria Wood as seen on TV". A combination of Victoria Wood's writing and Patricia Routledge's comic timing make me laugh as much now as they did when I first saw them. "Kitty" is great for getting rid of unwanted callers "I cant stop my flat backs onto a cake factory so I'm busy dusting my knick knacks all day long" usually does the trick.
“One of our regulars has a skin complaint and has to spend three months eating peanuts with the light off” it’s the specifics that makes Victoria Wood’s writing so brilliant but Dame Patricia Routledge makes that line somehow both believable and ridiculous at the same time
"When she plays ping-pong it puts you in mind of something thought up by Barnes Wallace" - this is such an amazingly clever line that perfectly describes the movement of an unsupported bosom!
It simply does not get better. I was 12 in 1986 when I first noticed Kitty, Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Alan Bennett et. al. on either BBC2 or Channel 4. I find myself agog at 48 wondering how to get a non-native speaker to see what wonders are going on here with the English language. Mind you, these days...
