One daughter actually has a really good Ted Talk on her experience and how it damaged her relationship with her mother. She can be seen in some if the videos being taught to hate as little as 6-8 years old.

That lady’s sign says “god made you man or woman and be content, blah, blah, bible.” This weekend I’m going to the airport. I’m going to yell at all the people as they board “god made you wingless! Be content and stay on the ground! How dare you defy his wishes!!!”

Fred died in 2014. Shortly before his death, he was expelled from the WBC. Since many who are virulently anti-gay are gay themselves, the speculation was that he outed himself on his deathbed.

We hardly ever hear about Jim Jones anymore. An ENTIRE generation doesn't KNOW the horrors of what happened.

This church showed up and protested my friends funeral in 2001 because he was gay. Losing this friend was hard, but having these people show up made it worst.
Wow. Thats horrible. Imagine being his parents and having to listen to that ? That’s so bad. It doesn’t get much more sick than that.
Some of their friends in Amarillo showed up at a pride event and some "man" told me in the sassiest way possible while displaying very feminine mannerisms, "God made you to be a man!" I felt so sorry for him. I hope he can someday be comfortable with being honest to himself. I just told him, "you might not be here with the right mindset, but you're in the right place and I love you."
The best one I ever saw is when they decided to picket San Diego Comic Con, and the congoers in cosplay and weird outfits all came out and did a counterprotest just absolutely making jokes out of them. The Westboro folks left after ten minutes.

In 2010, the WBC picketed the University of South Florida between the Catholic Student Center and the Hillel House.
A few hundred students, faculty and locals show up to rally against them. I was one of the locals and a USF alumnus.
The WBC had 5 people holding signs, while all of us on the other side of the street sang songs and eventually turned our backs on them in unison.
It seems that the 'Bible Belt' is now worn very loosely around the ankles.

There's and interview one of his sons did several years back now about his escape from it the moment he turned 18, leaving in the middle of the night. He recognized the "church" for what it was and wanted out, on top of the abuse he received from Fred.

Hate to tell these people, but the Bible doesn't say anything about homosexuality. It discusses the social aspect of males taking on a submissive role in the social structure. The Bible does not address female same sex at all. Not a single word.

I think that WBC's whole shtick was their own kooky way of grifting. That's not to say that they didn't truly believe in what they were saying. But they hoped for a potentially lucrative bonus: that their in-your-face hatefullness would provoke the kind of nasty response that would allow them to sue for bazillions.
Wow. They protested Matthew Shepard’s funeral ? Didn’t even know that. I remember the movie they had about him when I was in HS. I think it was on MTV. That movie changed how I think. I still remember it.

She says her family believes in predestination, in that no matter what you do you can't escape your fate so ordained by God. Wouldn't that mean that gay people are so because God made them that way, and LGBT allies are so because of predestination too? That you are no one to judge, as that's what God has decided, you can't escape it, so no amount of protesting will change anything and is therefore useless and a waste of time? I mean, if nothing will change by their beliefs, why waste so much time and effort? And if the timewasting is also predestination, I would have a bone to pick with God for giving me such a s**ty time to spend on Earth.

Strangely enough, when Fred Phelps felt the hand of Death on his shoulder he began to talk to the people from LGBTQ Church across the road from his church, this led to him being kicked out of his own church before he died.
