Siwa Oasis, Egypt - The urban oasis of Siwa is one of Egypt’s most isolated settlements with a population of about 33,000 people, mostly made of Berbers; an ethnic group indigenous to North Africa, and being so remote, they’ve developed their own unique desert culture.
Almost Every Egyptian friend we spoke with since the beginning of our trip in Cairo told us we should go east towards Sharm El Sheik and Dahab first, instead of Siwa Oasis. They said the mountains are beautiful and the Red Sea beach resorts are pristine and relaxing… but instead, we chose to go West. a grueling 9-hour journey towards the Libyan border all because I saw a photo of place that looked so unique to anything I’d ever experienced.
The ancient Citadel of Shali, rising up through the heart of modern downtown Siwa, tucked away in Egypt’s Western Desert. It looked so different and foreign in photographs and now walking up through here in person proved that unwavering urge to be true.
This fortified city was built by Berber populations in the 13th century to protect inhabitants from wandering tribes.
The Siwa Shali is a Labyrinth of huddled buildings that once rose four or five stories high and housed hundreds of people, and the entire compound is made of mud from clay, salt and rock that acts as a natural insulator from the scorching summer months.
In 1926 however, a three-day torrential rain storm caused more damage than any invader had managed in hundreds of years, and people have since moved out to more modern homes with running water and electricity.
But what remains, is one of the coolest ruins I’ve ever seen.
Along with the incredible Egyptian Food, one of the most popular attractions in Siwa Oasis are the salt pools outside of downtown Siwa.
You see, years ago people realized that there’s a lot of money to be made in the salt trade here in Siwa, and inevitably mines were created to extract the natural resource from the massive dried up salt lakes just outside town.
As diggers dug, the holes would naturally fill with freshwater from underground springs, and the crazy aqua green and turquoise colored pools that would form as a result, are what we came to see first-hand.
As if an isolated community, wildly interesting ruins, and multi-colored therapeutic salt pools weren’t enough, oh yeah, Siwa is also the perfect gateway into the Western Sahara Desert.
We finish this picture perfect trip to Siwa, as per usual, with a meal and a new perspective.
It was easy getting here, but the juice was most definitely worth the squeeze.
I hope you enjoyed this Egypt Travel Vlog from Siwa Oasis, Egypt as much as we did making it! ❤️ If so, please hit that "👍" button, and leave a comment!
See ya next week!

Siwa is one of the most relaxation cities in Egypt :)
I’ve wanted to go to Egypt since 2017 because of AC Origins and Siwa is the main town in that game!! It’s so beautiful and I want to visit so bad! One of my best friends lives in Cairo and I want to meet her.
Egypt can surprise you even when you've been there 100 times. Thank you!

Thanks for showing *all* of Siwa, Gareth! A lot of folks reach out to me about Siwa with unrealistic expectations (both in what to expect there and in no realizing how far away it is from Cairo) because all they see are airbrushed Instagram posts, but your video really does Siwa justice. Glad you got to experience such an amazing part of Egypt!
What do you mean by expectations, every part in Egypt is beautiful and charming And the pictures on Instagram, most of them are from Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab and Hurghada
Jamal Siwa is those people who make you feel that you are not a tourist, but you are one of them. Greetings to you from Cairo ..' 🌺😇
Really glad you're having a good time in Egypt ♥️ Dahab is awesome as well, I hope you're planning to visit it soon 🌊🌞

Beautiful city man. I am Egyptian and I've never been to that part of the country. It is really nice to see it through your channel.
And I am also from Egypt and I will not go to these places
+1
Hope you enjoyed your time at my beloved country Egypt.
Egypt has many wonderful places you can go with Cairo and Siwa.
If you like historical places and want to see third of world's monuments you should go to Luxor and Aswan, you will see templates and ancient monuments that you will never see in any other place, and if you want to enjoy beach and sea of course you should go to Sharm Elshiekh and Hurghada and take a diving tour where you will see spectacular coral reefs and colorful fish. And finally you should visit Alexandria, a living city like Cairo but with its amazing coastal vibes and enjoy our special food here at my city.
Welcome to Egypt ♥️🇪🇬
Easy to get there by bus from Alexander. A wonderful memory of my two month trip traveling around Egypt a decade ago. The most treasured memory is the sound of the donkey carts going past the window of my room and sitting out on the central plaza having dinner at sunset time.
We look forward to seeing you again. Here are a lot of new things
😱

OMG - what a spectacular place. Well done all!
*SIWA WAS A HOLY CITY FOR PHAROAS , AND EVEN THE ALEXANDER THE GREAT WAS CROWNED A GOD OF EGYPT THERE IN THE CITY THE SALT LAKES CONSIDERED VERY GOOD FOR HEALING PURPOSES , AND THE VIEW OF THE SUNSET THERE IS ONE OF A KIND*
Do you really believe these tales? This Alexander reached entire world and came back in just 10 years. What a holywood like story😂 The guy never existed and the official history invented in last 2-3 centuries
What's with the capital letters we all noticed!
@@soulsiriussorry are you saying Alexander the Great didn't exist? 😅
This is one of my favorite videos detailing the surreal accommodation, salt pools, and the crazy drive in the desert! 👏👏👏
