    The 20 years I spent in the Navy as a nuke MM were some of the worst (and sometimes most challenging) times of my life. All too often I found myself excluded from activities and billets just because my NEC. I would have much better preferred to serve my country in other rates better suited for my temperament and experience. I only got to use my foreign language skills twice in all of that time (France and Japan)

      I left the Navy Nuclear program after eight and a half, the financial returns in the commercial industry were too great for me to pass up, but I know what you mean about getting into a narrow billet availability especially for shore duty, pretty much Nuclear School or Prototype instructor slots...

    What is the difference of GCT-ARI and ASVAA

    • @NauticalPappyStu
      @NauticalPappyStu  Před 3 lety

      The GCT-ARI system dates back to WWII while the ASVAA/B was first introduced in 1968 and was adopted by all branches of the military in 1976. I left the Navy Nuclear Program in the late 70's so my first hand knowledge of their specific differences is only their timeline... Maybe someone else who's more familiar with both will add to these comments...

      @@NauticalPappyStu ASVAB is what is used these days. The primary thing is that it is computer-based testing, and some sections scale according to competence. E.g. If you are getting questions right, it keeps giving you harder questions. It is broken up into a number of different sections, such as Arithmetic, language skills, mechanical, spatial awareness, etc. Each branch utilizes it differently, but for the Navy it considers 2 things. First is your overall percentile score, called the AFQT which caps out at 99. This is what they compare to in order to determine basic eligibility to join. Second is your individual line scores composited different ways. Different rates have different combinations of line scores that they have to make. So, for example, even though the AW cluster and the AE/ATs have a very similar overall score, they look at a different set of subcategories to build that composite score.

      @Brandon Rodriguez Jaime, there is no ASVAB score for MU - someone wanting to be a MU needs to audition and pass the ASVAB with at least the minimal score, which was 31 at the time of this video (lower now). They put 31QT (minimal ASVAB score), but 31 AFQT may have avoided confusion 👍
