I remember the very young Bode Miller, when his star started to rise at the Calgary Olympics in 2002 - 20 years ago!! It was already obvious back then that he had the talent and the personality for becoming an ATG champion. However, when he became the best skyer of his era and was at the peak of his abilities a few years later, his quirky and often somewhat alienating personality stopped him from becoming an olympic champion in 2006, although a fair amount of bad luck came into play, too. He didn't even win a medal and was ridiculed especially in the US for his numerous crashes and his wild all-or-nothing style! All this changed in 2010 in Vancouver. The expectations were not sky-high since his preparation was not ideal because he had been hurt, and he was not the top dog anymore. But on a good day he could still produce a perfect run! And he did just that more than once: he won a bronze, a silver and the elusive gold medal, thus becoming one of the most decorated athlets of the 2010 Olympics. After he had finally achieved olympic glory he could have retired as one of the most successful American alpine skyers of all time. But he was still not done! In 2014 he attended his fourth consecutive Olympics, and he won miraculously another bronze medal at a time when he mourned the death of his brother.
Bode Miller has achieved Olympic greatness after all. Especially his longevity is astonishing! And it is remarkable that he won all his olympic medals before and after he had reached his peak. When he was at his best in 2006 he did not win a medal. But hey, we are talking about Bode Miller 😉
