  • the Gardens at Hidcote Manor, Mottisfont Abbey, Sissinghurst Castle
    With a cameo appearance by Nigel Nicolson
    Why did American-born Major Lawrence Johnston spend much of his lifetime creating a storied garden in a remote part of the Cotswolds? What is Graham Stuart Thomas's glorious collection of antique roses doing in a medieval English Abbey? What persuaded author, poet and plantswoman Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson to buy a derelict ruin on the edge of the Kentish Weald to create their fabled garden? Their son, Nigel Nicolson, reminisces about this most beloved of gardens and his now legendary parents.
    An extensive tour of each garden examines design, plantings, close-up details, and observations by gardeners. An hour of sheer enjoyment, beauty, and an excellent source of inspiration for those with a love for gardens.

    I've been watching this documentary now for a few years, I have accumulated many books on the garden and the lives of Vita, Harold and Nigel. I would like to commend Nigel for propagating the memory of this famous garden created by his parents all those many years ago. We owe him a deep credit that thanks to his books and these interviews, Sissinghurst lives on!

    Breathtakingly beautiful. Our UK cities & towns look & feel soulless without plants & trees, negatively framing people's minds. All Councils should encourage community public planting.🌼💚

    The white garden is amazing for moonlight. Once I designed a champagne pink garden with blue green foliage plants and grey foliage like artemis and dusty miller and lambs ears, only the palest pink florals allowed, for a similarly magical effect in the starlight and daylight alike. These gardens show what I think is the right use of money and time. I hope there are gardens in heaven. We have in any garden the picture of revival and continuance of beauty and peace we hope to inhabit in eternity.

    That is a disguised accent, quite unnatural and not native British, trying too hard to sound authentic. The music also tries too hard. Handel is very formal, buttoned up music of the courts, while gardens are outdoors, free and easy and essentially romantic. Delius, or Vaughan Williams, even Butterworth would have been a better choice. Another sign of imposters, trying to be as British as possible and garner large quantities of US views.

    • @clairenoon4070
      @clairenoon4070 Před rokem

      @@lesliekendall5668 What a bizarre definition of 'taxpayer'!
      If people choose to become members of the National Trust, or pay entrance fees to visit properties or gardens, or eat and drink in one of the cafes or restaurants whilst on a visit, or buy things in one of the shops (physical and online), or stay in one of their holiday cottages, or stay in one of their hotels, or go on any of their courses etc etc, the list goes on, that is entirely that; a choice. Nobody has to spend a single penny with the NT if they don't wish to.
      Your daft claim is like saying you buying a brand of shower gel is 'you as a taxpayer being forced to pay for something'.
      Also, in the earlier days of the NT, when some of these agreements were made, it was actually the reverse; families were expected to provide a massive lump-sum to the NT to provide an 'endowment' from which the interest would help towards the upkeep. The NT regularly walked away from properties that were offered to it by families if they felt the proposed endowment was insufficient.
      Further; many people who visit these properties like the idea that they are still family homes, albeit that the family will now live in a limited suite of rooms or separate apartment within the house, to enable the rest of the property to be shown.
      Further, given that the demographic most likely to be NT members or visitors are retired people, they are not taxpayers anyway!

      @@lesliekendall5668 Oh, and the vast majority of NT properties DON'T have family living there.

    Frankly, I'm not that impressed. The glowing build-up exceeds the reality too much. It all depends on the particular season, and light. I don't know when this was filmed, but it seems over exposed, and the colours weak. I saw this Garden some years ago on TV, it was far crisper and defined than here.
