Fatima Whitbread is a former javelin world champion, double Olympian and former world record holder. This week she was honoured with the Helen Rollason Award at Sports Personality of the Year 2023 for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. Fatima was abandoned by her mother as a baby and spent her first 14 years in care homes. She faced neglect, physical and sexual abuse. In her teens, she discovered a passion for javelin and was coached by Margaret Whitbread, a former GB thrower. Margaret and her husband later adopted Fatima, and described her as "completing the family unit".

Really, really impressed and moved. I don't think kids in children's homes could have a better spokesperson.

Such a truly inspirational woman. As a long term foster carer myself, I understand where Fatima is coming from. Such a worthy cause.

Fatima Whitbread is truely an amazing inspiring woman and I absolutely respect her and her adocacy for children in care, the care system has been failing too many children as she says for many many years and by successive governments.I hope she manages to make the changes it needs so much and with others who are prepared to dedicate their time and energy in the way she does.Anyone ina position to and with the platform should work and dedicate themselves to those who do not have the opportunities they had and Fatima is a great example of how to pass it on.
Amazing and big respect to Fatima,so glad she won that award, well deserved !!👏👏

What a wonderful women Fatima is. Her story shows the emotional trauma & how auntie Ray gave empathy that Fatima channelled to give others. Amazing ❤

Before this I thought of Fatima as a great sportsperson . After this I thought that was probably the least of her greatness.
