This is a very old pattern that came to the Soldier Palmers team via the team captain at the time, Alan Ward. It was a close hold pattern 15 - 20 or so years ago but has fallen out of favour of late. It has pretty much been replaced by a fly from Peter Harrop called the Red Devil, which is much simpler to tie. I still have a few of these in my box though down to #14 and they have dug me out of a hole more than once. If you have the inclination it is worth the time and effort to whittle a few up they will not disappoint!

I have struggled with a needle point to split JC. Never thought of using my scissors. Thanks for the tip

The skinny Diawl tends to be the most productive. The tinsel can be, mirror, holographic, or magic. In a range of colours. Red, orange, green, blue, purple, silver, pearl, gold, copper, black. The later can be solid, holographic, I even still have some from using VHS video tape. With the Polish quills being the best for quality and definition. If they begin to dry out, become stiff or brittle? Just use a drop of a basic hair conditioner or lanolin based hand cream. With a drop between your fingers and thumb. Draw the quills lightly between them. Leave for a few hours before wiping off excess with kitchen roll, tissue or a soft cloth. They will be soft and flexible for a couple of years and you can repeat as needed this can save a batch of herl if damaged by bleaching, dye disasters. It also works with ostrich herl or older pheasant tail fibres, or if a cape is dry and brittle. You are not the only one who is careful 😂😂

I have not been in the market for a new one in a long time. I would never buy one online you want to see what your getting. They are so expensive now I doubt I will ever buy another.
