- In this video I get my hands on a new 2024 Gibson Les Paul Modern Studio guitar and run through what makes it go vrrroooom. It's a pretty spectacular machine, but im curious if people will like the price and how it will sit at just a few hundred bucks more than a Les Paul Modern Lite and a few hundred bucks less than a Les Paul Modern. Only time will tell!

Super informativ!! Thanks!
I truly love the eay you display your settings while playing. Great review. The term "slim taper" covers such a huge range of measurements.
Thank you for the kind words and for checking out the video!
Agreed about the slim-taper terminology! Hahah
Great info that's hard to find right now. But I sure am glad I got my 2018 studio model when I did.
Thanks for checking it out!
Great review my friend!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 keep rocking hard!
Thank you for the kind words and for checking out the video! 🤘🏽
Great review and very nice playing btw
Thank you for checking it out!
This LP looks nice and all, but i can't help but think Gibson is overpricing it. Satin white, no grain filler, no gloss lacquer, no buffing, no fret nibs, no hard case, all this makes it cheaper to make. The only thing I can see which is a plus is the nice Pearl Logo. I have a 2013 Les Paul in satin white, same finish, with no filler. It has a 50's maple neck (which I think is a plus), Identical pickups as this one, with a silkscreen logo. It cost £599 brand new. In my opinion this should cost LESS than a regular studio, all that buffing adds much to the production process. Cheers for the review!
Thanks for checking it out! I agree with you that it is pricy for sure. It’s a damn fine guitar, but consumers aren’t ready for those price upgrades. I’m torn on the issue myself. It’s genuinely hard to find an American made electric below $2k, much less one of that has some of high end features Gibson can afford by virtue of their “SIZE” as a company. It’s a tough spot for sure. Cheers!
Thanks
Replacement for the Classic. If they'd kept the old Studio price, this would have been a hit.
Great review!.. thanks!… I have 3 Les Pauls. One is a wine red studio and I’m starting to love it more than the standards… this white model you reviewed is just beautiful.. I love it!
Thank you for the kind words and for checking out my video!
I gotta admit, I’ve been loving the wine red stuff the past couple years. I have a wine red burst SG Supreme im doing a review on now and it’s gorgeous.
cool! Thanks :)
This is amazing! Thanks for sharing this. Since that Gibson gear video I was eagerly awaiting this. I have a 1990 alpine white studio which is one of my favorite guitars. Of all their new releases this studio modern in the white finish is what I am most excited about. Genuinely surprised this hasn’t gotten more publicity and people aren’t talking about it more. Really tempted to buy one now that they’re out. Would be a nice modern compliment to my 1990 studio. Just wish they did some different pickups to change things up but I understand keeping the 498T/490R if this is meant to replace the current studio.
100% agree with you about the pickups. That 498T/490R combo is GREAT combo (it’s the pickups on the base Custom Shop model, after all!), but I, too, was hoping for a change up. Been playing the guitar more though and I do like it!
@@CompanyGrip Keeping my fingers crossed some Sweetwater or dealer exclusives are made with different pickups.
Your 90 Studio is special. Good wood era and if it’s white with the ebony board even more special! I have an 05 Studio I purchased new. I actually like the neck as it is between my my slim taper 60’s neck Standard and a baseball bat 50’s profile. 👍
Thanks for the "sneak peek"! I missed out on not pulling the trigger on the old Alpine White w/Gold hardware & Ebony fretboard. Those were our secret $1200.00 Les Paul Customs(without the body and neck binding) but the same 490B/498T pups, ebony boards ect. They did look so close. Seeing this has inspired me to buy the new Modern Studio in White for a replacement of a Sorry sack of Shiteo Charvel Pro-Mod supertele with unfinished frets, sharp as sharp gets and sprouting ends. But that's another story, thank you.
😂 sorry about your charvel. I haven’t played one for a long while now. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@CompanyGrip thanks! Yeah, on paper the guitar kicks ass. It's a Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal style-2 HH HT in Robins Egg Blue(the pictures show it too pastel but it has a metallic red undertone so the paint is cool). Fishman Fluence Classic Open Core pickups, roasted maple 12"-16"neck 25.5, locking tuners but it came to me unopened by Musician's Friend, straight from Ensenada B.C. Mexico without the checklist completed. The final inspection wasn't checked off nor the neck finish checked. The owners manual had a Vans tennis shoe print on the half that wasn't torn up. Im laughing as im writing this cause if I didn't that would've triggered me to drive down to Ensenada haha. Musician's Friend is a joke, they wanted me to pay for shipping it back. People complain about Gibson like it's fashonable! I've bought 4 new guitars from Gibson, just one had a cosmetic issue which was fine. A 2004 & 05 Les Paul Melody Maker. Like a Junior but had a Tune-O- Matic & Stopbar, no pickguard & the MM paddle headstock. A Gibson Memphis 08 Tom Delonge ES-333 & Custom Shop Firebird NR VII TV White w/gold hardware, all great. Im at an age where I just want to play music with others for the fun of it so I just need one really good one. This White Studio is running neck and neck vs a 23 Seafoam Green LP Classic(Limited color for Musician's Friend which as much as I hate to go back to, I have a credit line with thdm). Sorry bout the length. I subscribed as I like your clear delivery when reviewing.
@@CompanyGripBest news for me is Gibson has a Plek! No cutting frets!
I really like it !! And I like how you focused on sound rather than your playing skills. Thank you !!
Thanks for checking out the video! Yes - I lack the skills to actually impress anyone with anything I’d play, so I just stick to the facts as best as I can! Haha
You left out a very important detail! The MOP Gibson logo! HUGEEE selling point for some. That hate silk screen decals
your overlay graphic makes it easy to follow what's happening with the knobs and switches. I got my Gibson les Paul studio back when the retail was $1,599. I think it's great overall except the neck is a bit sticky. I like the Gibson soft case. Ironically the only hardshell case I have came with an inexpensive Epiphone acoustic (and that is a very nice case). Interested to try the moderns although the les Paul modern lite might be the one I try first. some of these satin body finishes seem like a kit body you would get online and then finish yourself -- maybe makes more sense on an acoustic if satin does in fact make the top more resonant.
Thanks for the kind words and for checking out the video. I’m glad the graphic helped out! I spend probably more time than necessary to make it, so it’s good to hear that it is helpful!
FYI, the Modern Lite is one of my favorite guitars to come out of Gibson last year!
Cheers!
They are 3 piece bodies which is easier to see on the wine red satin and explains why you don't have a center seam. Pearloid inlays. Mine came with a poker chip in the bag. I really like mine a lot! The heel makes it feel like I'm holding an SG. Balances nicely, plays fast!
Agreed! Really nice version of the studio! Thanks for checking out the video. Cheers!
I know $2,000 is a lot for Studio but the black nickel hardware and bound ebony fretboard is winning me over. I am not ready to get one now but if it is available at the end of the year it would make a great Christmas present.
Using Internactional Metric System would have been nice too
8:22. I have a guitar with a switch that puts the bridge pickup straight out the jack. It does go to 11, ,but only because no matter what, the pots eat up some of the sound. You want to know what it’s best for? EVH. His original guitars had bridge pickup, one volume pot straight out the jack. It really helps nail the EVH sound.
Totally! Nothing beats it sometimes!
Cheers!
Interesting look at the ‘24 Studio. I have mixed feelings about some of the new directions at Gibson. But hey, if it doesn’t work out there’s always next year’s models.
I have a ‘21 Studio bought from Sweetwater, and I’m still very happy with it. Mine is cherry burst, and unlike most Studios, the maple top has a good amount of flame figuration, much more than was revealed by their online photos. Since I was a kid, I loved the beautiful, transparent cherry red of Les Pauls, and now I’ve got one. I’ve seldom liked the appearance of binding, so it’s a win-win hit.
Nice! Glad you got the guitar you still like! Very cool! Thanks for checking out the video!
I was planning on buying the 2024 Les Paul Studio then I got the chance to play the Modern. I loved the feel and the look. So I just purchased a mint condition Les Paul Modern for $2000 at my door. This is my first Gibson and I plan to take it to my next gig. I understand the prices went up, but I would probably recommend getting one second hand. The 2024 Gibson Les Paul Modern is $3000 + tax .
Yeah! It’s not cheap, but it’s a good guitar for sure! Thanks for checking out the video!
Dance with the Dead! Great video!
I would like to hear this with the Fishman Modern Fluence Pickups.
Wow! How these guitars have gone up in price. I purchased my 2009 Gibson LP Studio for a bit over $1,200.00. I still have that guitar and it plays like a dream.
Oh yeah. Crazy!
Great video! Really like this guitar. That price, though… Especially here in europe. At Thomann it’s the equivalent of 2600 dollars. You just made me want to listen to Dance with the dead again! Played loved to death to death when it came out. Not really listened to them since
Awesome! I love DWTD! Cheers!
Great video! Any indication on when these will be released?
I’m thinking definitely 1st quarter 24, so probably in next month or two. Almost all the old Studio stock is gone, so probably waiting to clear more units is my guess?
This is interesting as some people don’t want all of the classic decoration like white binding, flame top pattern, etc. I think it’s a cool minimalist version.
Agreed! It’s pretty cool for sure!
Nice a Modern LPJ for 4x s as much!
I have my dream Les Paul and if this Studio was an alpine white like ivory with a gloss finish and was over 4kg I would accept this. If you look for an around 2000 Studio with this type of ebony fretboard, you can find it for $1000.
Thanks for the helpful review. Question - Is this the only Gibson Les Paul model that has the cut at the heel like that for easier upper fret access?
Thanks for checking the video out!
To answer your question, no, there have been a number of Les Paul’s that have had that cut. The Les Paul Modern for example, or I’m pretty sure anything that says Les Paul ‘Axess’ has a similar cut as well.
Agreed. I've got an Epiphone Les Paul Special I. Bolt on. Guaranteed it sounds the same. Bought for $115 vs $1,300..
This guitar is awesome. I wonder if it is Gibson’s answer to the American professional two deluxe model.
Maybe. I know since Cesar took over he’s been trying hard to revive the company a bit, and perhaps he’s more interested in changing things up and seeing how it works out then relying on the same ol’.
There’s a lot of people that don’t like the new Studio Modern - but, there’s a lot of people that do… so… 🤷♂️
Thanks for checking out the video!
Bought the modern Les Paul last year, definitely selling it for this one
Just curious, why so?
Just never vibed with it, first Gibson, mainly a strat guy. Was gonna try some different pickups but for a $3000 guitar I shouldn’t have to mod anything on it. $2000 for this is ok, that’s usually the most I’d spend on a new guitar anyway.
If you’d be interested in an even trade let me know. It’s the black modern, barely played.
Thanks, I appreciate the offer, and I’d certainly be getting the better end of the deal from a financial point of view, but I’m hanging onto this for a long-term 1 year review.
Cheers and good luck… if you search for Les Paul Modern Studio in google, you may or may not find just one brand new Smokehouse Studio Modern model from 2024 for sale. (At least as of 3 hours ago). 👀
@@CompanyGrip just saw it, but I’ll wait for the white👍🏽
As of May 3 Guitar Center is selling this guitar for $1499 and the Modern Lite for $799.
Great deal for both!
Do you know when Gibson will release this? Been waiting a while, maybe at NAMM?
I was under the impression the end of this month or early next month. A few of them have trickled out into the wild, but no massive release yet.
It’s definitely not NAMM, because between Gibson and myself, only one of us is here and it ain’t them. Cheers!
I’ve heard ‘23 was the last year for the studio?
I believe that is true for the old Studio. Now it’s the Studio Modern
I can picture that in a Pelham blue 😳
That would be awesome.
This would be such a killer deal minus the price hike. Better grabbing a NOS Classic before they sell out.
That’s not a bad idea at all! Thanks for checking it out!
They need to make a version of one that leaves out the option of pulling on yer knob and sell it for the $1699 price point and throw in a hard shell case.
Would you say the frets on this guitar are actually medium jumbo (like on an Epiphone) or are they the Gibson vintage style tiny frets they call medium jumbo?
Sorry for the late reply - CZcams filtered this comment for some reason.
I would compare them to Gibsons standard “medium jumbo” fret wire they’ve been using for many years. Thanks!
You are talking about coil tap, but it is actually a coil split. A coil tap diminishes the windings, a coil split splits the 2 coils.
Hi. Thanks for checking out the video. The Gibson Les Paul Studio Modern has coil tapping not coil splitting. Where it seems Epiphone puts the splitting in their guitars, Gibson seems to always prefer a tap. Thanks!
Really? So Just less windings to lower the output? But in that case you need to adjust the visuals on the side. They indicated splitting. I personally would have prefered that.
Thanks for reacting! And thanks for the demo, nicely done!
Regards,
Wilbert
Hi Wilbert, thanks for your comments. Yes, Gibson has what they call a “tuned coil tap”, which involves using a separate capacitor to ground the two coils to filter certain frequencies. They(Gibson) says: “to give you more realistic P90 sounds!”, but what does mean, really? Haha.
And, YES, you are correct, my graphic is a bit misleading. Sometimes in my haste I forget to fine-tune certain aspects, and the coil-tap vs coil-split graphic is one of those things that fell through the cracks.
Thanks for checking out the video and for the comments! Cheers!
you really should've had a clip of spinal tap when you said, "these go to 11" hahahaha. I was waiting for it but it never came
True! lol. Thanks for checking it out!
for 2k it should have binding on the body...full stop.
Are the top and back both satin finish?
Yes. Both satin finish. The cap is more of a solid white, and the back(mahogany bit) is more of a brushed “worn” white.
@@CompanyGrip Man, i cant get past 2k for a satin finish and a gig bag.
The gig bag is nice, but agree, for that price a case would be preferred. Cheers! Maybe when the model actually drops they will change it to a proper case.
$2000 though...geez. This is the guitar we should of been getting at 1400-1500
I just got a demo for 1600. Don't pay more
I just got one for 1600. It was marked demo, but that's all I'm willing to do.
ho man... don't care about the 2K... this one is classy and majestic
sigh... I already have one Les Paul.. and a Hell of a one...
BUT... if this new one would be my guitar for "out of home" usage
it would keep the "hell of a one" in full security at home
ho yeah... I do have my LINE here...
cool... where is the shop, I am coming...
..
is an epiphone model would have the same features for the volumes and tones?
WoW I cant wait for a smokehouse
Soon! 🤘🏽
Think I'm going with the Smokehouse as well!
Got a bit further in the video and I'm really disappointed with the neck dimensions. Not sure I can play that thin of a neck. I'll have to try it out at my local shop instead of just buying without playing it.
Understandable. You might be surprised. I’ve always been a fan of FATNeck Gibsons, but I didn’t find this to be too bad, but, yes, this was on the thinner end of any Gibsons I have.
What do you currently play/or like in a guitar neck?
I really like the slim 60s profile or close to that. I had a 60s LP Standard but got rid of it due to weight and upper fret access. Which is why I'm really excited for this new Studio.
I have a SG Standard and 339. Also a 2012 Fender Jaguar.@@CompanyGrip
I see ebony board, I buy.
When you do your 1st, 12th fret measurements do it just behind the fret... like everyone else does. No point in those measurements if everyone does it different. Also might want to put some painter's tape on the calipers and zero it with that, even though yours are plastic
Thanks for your comment Kent. And thanks for checking out the video. Personally, I take measurements in the center of the fret as I find that to be the most accurate representation of where your fingers will be.
But, let’s be honest, the center of a fret to even just behind or in front of the fret wire shouldn’t be substantially different. Different yes, but I’d be surprised if it was more than .005 of an inch.
And yes, regarding the calipers, I made sure they were plastic!
Cheers!
@@CompanyGripgreat video. The playthrough sounded awesome!
Thank you Kent! What kind of guitars are you playing?
@@CompanyGrip my preference is 90s Les Paul Classics. They're basically Custom Shop reissues except with the typical 9-hole weight relief. Your vid made me wonder if the guitar has weight-relieving. The glossy Studios have modern weight relief and I'm not sure if the Modern Lite have any.. maybe they're 'lite' because of the thinner body and contour cut and also no heavier maple top.. but the website doesn't say. The original "Lites" were all-mahogany except they had part of the body channeled out and filled with balsa wood, which Gibson called "chromyte"
Those Les Paul 90s are awesome. There’s so many great Gibson’s throughout the years I’d love to try. Right now I was to get my hands on a Trad Pro V… To answer your question, yes, the new Studio Modern has ultra-modern weight relief, which I’m sure you’ve seen before as the rounded-triangle shaped cuts around the bout, as well as a few other cuts by the lower horn and the wide channel for the wiring from the switch through the pickup routes to the control cavity.
I love your videos, especially this one. I bought a 2021 smokehouse Les Paul studio yesterday and absolutely love it.
One minor pet peeve with the video. The guitar was named after Les Paul..pronounced "Less" As in Lester. Not Lez Paul... Unless they renamed it after a lesbian named Paul.
Sorry bro... I just had to rip on you a little. Keep the great videos coming, in going back to shopping for a masculine hard case for
My new lesbian Paul guitar. 😉😂
😂 Old habits die hard. Thanks for checking out the video.
early 90s studios came with ebony board, gold hardware, hard gibson case etc cant see much difference bar the heel cut, push pulls mmm which im not a fan off, look for a used early 90s studio and save a few hundred quid
$2k for a studio? And it appears to have the cheaper satin finish to boot. They've lost their damn minds. Anyone who thinks this is an ok price deserves the soaking they're going to take on it.
This isnt going to sell well.
I’ve been wondering that. Still - when you think of an American made guitar for $2000, theres not a lot out there that is comparable. At least that im aware of. The Fender American Performer is about $1400. Les Paul Jr is $1600. I guess the question is, is the electronics and aesthetic feature sets of the new modern worth $400 dollars more? 🤷♂️
@@CompanyGrip that ebony fretboard is nice though.
They don‘t paint them to the finish and ask a lot more money for it? The Paintwork looks horrible. Gibson goes on killing itself.
I wasn't a fan of the worn white, but the wine red one looks amazing (the one I got)
Most people buy a Studio because they can’t afford a Standard. If you’re going to 2000 or 2200 then what’s the point? Better save up for the standard at that point and get all the bells and whistles … this one doesn’t even have a nitro finish .. mine has one and it smells amazing ..
What makes you think it does not have a Nitro finish?
Every Gibson has a nitro finish
@@dreamlifter2701 Exactly. So what makes @miguelmartins84 think that this is poly?
@@Zoilu they probably just aren’t aware that every Gibson is nitro. Even the cheapest guitars they make. I think also some people think that satin finishes can’t be nitro.
Yes I thought that satin finishes weren't nitro, my bad. Even still a satin finish was reserved for the tribute guitars that were previously in the range of 600-900€/$ not 2000€/$ ...
While this guitar is way overpriced in my opinion, I do appreciate the fact that Gibson has started to actually try some new things in the last few years besides the ridiculous signature models they’ve been putting out which I think are silly. We get it, Gibson. The ‘59 is the most coveted guitar on the planet. Thanks for finally not resting on your laurels
Agreed. As divided as the Theodore is, and how split the Modern Lite seems to be amongst fans, I do like the introduction of newer models. Thanks for checking the video out.
Cheers!
Why can’t Gibson just put the heel cut on ALL Les Pauls for cryin’ out loud. And WHY are the strings misaligned with the pickups, and coming off the bridge like it’s been drilled slightly off the correct position???????
Stop trying to make fetch a word Ben !!!! 😅😅😅😅
😆 You don’t like it? 😝
Gross. I hate it. Here in Canada, we went from $1799 for a studio a few years ago to $2599 for this hunk of junk and went from a nice hard case to a bag and from a beautiful high gloss nitro finish to a slap dash no-effort quick spray of "matte" nitro without even any pore filling or sanding of the wood. It's just SO cheap and yet so much more money. No thanks.
No damn way am I paying 2000 fucking dollars for a studio noooo fucking wayyyyyyyy
I get ya. Thanks for checking it out!
Doesn’t even have nitro anymore 😂
Plenty of people said the same thing when studios started getting over 1k price point. The last year or so has been the long inevitable price adjusting from all the inflation over the years. I just never thought it would be this exaggerated on the "lower level" American guitars. But then again, they have been smart to make epiphones higher end models the new "affordable Gibson" price point to make these prices more digestible. That's their thought process I'm sure. I'm glad I got my studio a couple years ago for 1600 OTD and my LP supreme for 3000 OTD a few weeks ago, bc all American models are gonna get some serious price hikes.
I just got a bourbonburst studio from sweetwater. I’ve played Epis for the last 40+ years and I love em. Went to get another, and there’s no way in hell I’m paying a grand for a Chinese guitar.
It is not adjusting for inflation. Are you friggin insane ??? Since when was the inflation between 2011 and 2024 "460%" ?? It's just plain old simple corporate greed. And Gibson trying to justify 1.5k prices on their chinese made epiphones by making the entry level Gibson unaffordable for the normal Joe.@@jasonsharpe9232
