    Great video! So we leave a hose connected to that drain valve. We have a connector on the end that allows us to connect to a pipe that carries the dirty water to a drian, and we just disconnect that once we have removed the water and place it into our brute trash can that has our new water ready to go in the tank. Pretty well same set up. It makes water changes a snap. Also have a hose permanently set next to brute trash can to fill new water easy.

    I find this a lot of work to repurpose a pumphead ! I bought a pumphead for 30 euros and connected it with quick coupling to a flexible (non expanding! ) hose and an indoor adapter from Gardena to the tap at the other end for water changes. The hose is called Liano, but there are cheaper alternatives, you can use an expandable hose, but then use only the not expanded length as the pumphead has not enough strength to expand the hose. The Gardena flexible garden hose is dream to work with and 20 meters fits in a bucket. To remove water: Connect the pumphead to the hose with the quick coupling and put the pump in the water. Pump the water out. Water in: connect the indoor adapter to your tap and fill the aquarium. Store the 20 meters or so in a bucket.

    I drain it this way every week. I run a hose from my guest bathroom to the tank in order to temperature match the water.
    Also, the utility valve has been recognized as a week point in the filter. They tend to leak when used often as particles get stuck in them from food or substrate. To fix this, we install the factory hose to the utility valve and leave that valve open 24/7. We install a 3/4” ball valve on the other end of the hose and clamp it in place. The hose wraps around the filter and clicks into place in the clips that are installed on top of the lid. To use the utility valve we simply attach a hose to the other side of the ball valve and open the ball valve itself, never touching the utility valve. Hope I explained this correctly.

    Why not leave the hosepipe on the filter

  • @in4moon
    @in4moon Před rokem +1

    does this valve bypass filter mediums? Because if it's not, I'd be concerned about rinsing beneficial bacteria inhabiting the medium directly with new sterile water. I currently use Eheim 250 Classic, with a T connector on intake, and drain water from Aquarium this way, but I use a separate pump to push new water directly through aquarium. Not sure if my concern is justified, but I feel that once water mixes in the aquarium before re-entering filter, beneficial bacteria in the filter doesn't get impacted as much.

    • @cichlaguru
      @cichlaguru  Před rokem +1

      Hey, How's your day going? So my answer is this. It may pass over the beneficial bacteria but now in a negative way. The way i do it is i pre treat the water first. Every water change i add in a beneficial bacteria as an aide to keep the good bacteria levels up. That is what i do and so far it has worked for me without any issues. Now everyone's water is different and certain things in others waters effect the outcome. But imo if your replacing beneficial bacteria while doing a water change, then no there is no negative impact. As for something major to happen beneficial bacteria would have to be soaked in pure tap water for a period of time for it to have a negative reaction. Hope this helps. If not we can continue to chat 😎

      @@cichlaguru I usually use the water conditioner couple of minutes prior to water swap (in theory it should eliminate chlorine, and couple of other nasties). I do match water temp with approx 2 degree Celsius accuracy. I have "seachem Stability", but I don't always add it during water change (maybe I should start doing so). I was recently also questioning whether I should add my micro and macro fertilizers to the swap bucket, or perhaps later directly to the aquarium. I'd say I have a fairly good water circulation, so it should get a good mix either way. Also I'm worried about micro fertilizer potentially being neutralized by the water conditioner.
