This was originally a missing story but all 4 episodes was later recovered in Hong Kong in 1991 and it immediately went to VHS in 1992 which has now become a classic.
I remember it well! Couldn't believe it :)
By this story, the BBC are shooting in 625i PAL system and not the old 405i Marconi-EMI system.
Toberman is the main character. He is obviously Kaftan's lover and bodyguard. (this is from 'The Mummy')
He's partially converted by the Cybermen and they use the Cyber hypnotic force on him.
But it's his EMOTIONS that defeat the Cybermen. When they kill Kaftan, he goes nuts and beats the Cybercontroller up.
Then he does something the Cybermen won't do. He is brave enough to give up his own life to close the tomb.
"NOBODY gets past Toberman!" It's one of the most noble deaths in DW history.
Kemel and Toberman are both played by Jamaican stunt men. They were not actors. That's why they don't speak.
BOTH these characters are fkng heroes, and Toberman is the one who sacrifices himself to save everyone.
Neither character is "stupid". Kemel is mute and Toberman is deaf. (He was supposed to be wearing hearing aid)
Sonny Caldinez who played Kemel also played Ice Warriors several times.
I was born 2 years after the year 1967 when this awesome Cyberstory, was aired and I wish I seriously had been born 4 or 5 or even 6 or more years before 1967 then I could have seen Tomb of the Cybermen first time around I bought the VHS in 1992 when I was aged 23.
This entire story is based on classic horror film "The Mummy".
That's why there is an ancient tomb. That's why there are hieroglyphics on the walls and a sarcophagus.
It's also why Kleig and Kaftan are played as Egyptian. Egyptian currency is the Egyptian pound.
That's why Kaftan offers "fifty pounds!" to open the tomb door.
I believe the actor who played Kleig also played an Egyptian character in The Mummy or a related Mummy film from the 1960s...
You don't like the Tomb cyber-head logo, Murk? Dang, I always wanted it tattooed on my shoulder. Never got around to it. I guess different generations have different aesthetics after all lol
I was in my early 20's when this story was recovered in 1992. We only had 5 complete stories from Season Six to see, and the first few recovered episodes were being released on VHS. The recovery of Tomb was important. Only the Target novel was the experience then. Now, with audio, animations, photo-recons all of Troughton, and Hartnell's episodes can be experienced.
Very clunky and cheap in parts this one, but completely iconic. Brilliant character scenes as well...
"The fuel pumps. Some character has balled up the lot!" Ya know... faking an American accent isn't _just_ about the accent itself (and I'd give this guy's attempt a generous 6 out of 10). It's also about avoiding using terminology that Americans would never _EVER_ use. And "balled up the lot" definitely falls into that category.
Eh, wait 'til you meet Peri. She was faking her American accent both on screen and off. She was hired for the job _because_ she was supposedly American... and somehow nobody behind the scenes knew she was faking it. I don't think she admitted it until several years after she left the show. And I would give her accent more like a 7 out of 10. But she never shied away from using British terminology that Americans would never say... because she honestly didn't know the difference. And apparently no one else on set did either.
Be warned Victoria screams more and louder than Susan!!
Great creepy story. Kleig and Kaftan are good villains and the Cybermen are very menacing. So pleased this story was found. The Target book is excellent. Really atmospheric.

It was a wonderful moment when this story was recovered in Hong Kong. On a topical political note Deborah Watling’s brother Giles is the Tory MP for Clacton. He is fighting for his seat in the election against Nigel Farage.
One nazi psychpath against the other. I hope neither of those fascist shites win the seat.
The one thing I don’t get with this story and it’s the fact that the Doctor should want to help Klieg open the main door to the steps leading down to the tomb, knowing how dangerous the Cybermen are! He should have been doing his very best to stop the archaeologists from even entering the tomb on the planet outside.
Klieg is an interesting villain but I’m afraid the actor playing him, George Pastell, wasn’t a very good actor, and his Cypriot-English accent didn’t help with his line delivery.
Fun fact: Shirley Cooklin, who played the villainess Kaftan, was at the time of recording this story, married to the producer of this story, Peter Bryant. Nepotism at its finest within the BBC!
That's always confused me a bit too. As for entering the control area, the main doors have already killed one person. He knows the expedition are determined to get inside, so opening the doors safely to avoid any more deaths is understandable.
Solving the logic puzzle could just be him showing off, without fully realising the consequences. That seems a bit asinine for the Doctor though.
As for the Doctor's motives, all I can guess is that he knows the humans are capable enough to get inside sooner or later (the spaceship crew brute force the hatch controls later circumventing the logic puzzle anyway). This way the Doctor saves time, gains trust with the expedition and can then closely monitor the situation. He doesn't open the hatch himself directly and tries to dissuade the others from proceeding, which 'technically' then allows his conscience to remain clear.

I quite like the pictures of the Cybermen on the wall. Which evidently was roughly done due to budget. But in universe. if it's meant to take some inspiration from Egyptian hieroglyphs and so on.
It sort of represents how Cybermen would evidently make worse versions of that since they're simply cybernetic. Idk just a small headcanon.
I like this story, but I think it's a tad overhyped. The comedy is brilliant tho!
