  • Here's a Star Trek Phase II VFX Reel by Tobias Richter and The Light Works for some of the effects sequences in "The Holiest Thing" and "Bread and Savagery"!
    You get beautiful views of the Phase II Enterprise, as well as get a glimpse behind the scenes at how Tobias and TLW's "work in progress" as Tobias and the gang switch from "animatics" to fully rendered scenes! You also get a glimpse of how some of the amazing greenscreen compositing is done.
    And of course, you get LOTS of Enterprise eye candy!!!

      When you only care about profit, and not the product that is what happens. S2 of Discovery was a bit of a repair job for S1 and I totally agree on Anson Mount and his acting chops. He made a perfect Captain Pike. Too bad S3 of Discovery did not follow the mold of S2. So much 31st Century potential wasted on agenda based scripts. a good series for this I think would have been using the Excalibur, Hood, Lexington and Potemkin from the episode Ultimate Computer as test beds for this refit since all of those ships would need repairs in one way or another, especially the Excalibur. They could then use all 4 ships serving in different episodes with intersecting arcs to give the series some depth with out over using one ship over another. Series would end after say 5 years which would give Starfleet engineers information they would use on the second major refit of the Constitution class which would be done on the Enterprise and a few of the remaining Constitution class ships that hadn't had a major refit yet. An extremely de-aged, de-weighted Shatner could be brought in to bring the Enterprise into space dock where her refit would begin.

    I love this design, I think it is a more believable refit of the TOS Enterprise. THough I love TMP Enterprise refit, it looks like an entirely different ship. This PII design is a better and believable refit as it maintains hull elements of the original. If they were going to make that many changes then I would think building from scratch would have been more reasonable.

      I agree completly. ST:TMP Enterprise is nice, but it is cannot be the same ship. Imagine how much more emotional the end of ST3 would have been if the ship in the video had been the one destroyed. You would have really felt more of a loss because in the mind of the movie goer it would have been the TOS Enterprise.

      You know it occurs to me that with the way that CGI can be added to existing films, there is no reason that Star Trek I - III cannot have the Phase II Enterprise inserted in place of the TMP Enterprise. Of course this would only happen if there was a movement in the Star Trek fan base that would make it financially profitable for the studio to do. As far as the original timeline goes having the PII ship in TMP, TWoC, and finally it being destroyed in at the end of TSfS would make perfect since. At the end of TVH Kirk and crew would get the entirely new "Enterprise A" (TMP Enterprise).

    • @Hibernicus1968
      @Hibernicus1968 Před 7 lety +1

      Doug C, no, it really can't. The Midway got an angled flight deck added after WWII, which changes its appearance quite a bit, but the rest of the ship is still the same. If you look at an overlay of the original series Enterprise, and the refit Enterprise, you will observe that the dimensions are different enough that you can't really fit the old ship inside the contours of the refitted one. The only part of the ship that COULD be the same is some of the framework of the primary hull. EVERYTHING else would have to be new.

    • @logandarklighter
      @logandarklighter Před 7 lety +3

      In other words - what we see in this video is original Enterprise, but with engines/pylons that are a sort of halfway step between those of the series and those of S:TMP.
      I'm wondering - would it make sense for a final series refit of JUST the engine nacelles and pylons in the final year of the 5-year mission to those of TMP: E. - making that final step to the engine style of the motion picture?
      And then the extensive total refit of the Enterprise from the series to the movie after the 5-year mission actually could consist of *total replacement* of the secondary hull - but keeping the existing primary (but making changes) and also keeping the engines/pylons from the (theoretical) final engine refit that I mention above.
      That way it's handled in stages - but mostly keeping to the idea that - though most of the original parts are now gone/changed, it technically IS still the same ship.

    The planet scenes have me excited. Love Phase II, but it's been lacking in the 'explore strange new worlds' aspect of Star Trek. It's mostly been a bottle show with redressed ship sets. Granted, I know there's no budget to build planet sets every episode, but Kitumba was so well done with the off-set filming that it has me craving more!
    Keep up the good work! Looking forward to future episodes, and thanks for keeping Gene's vision alive.

    and then.... they decided to make Star Trek: The Motion Picture instead of Phase II (and the rave reviews that movie had... or not), only because of Star Wars and the thunder it made in '77. i read a biography that William Shatner had a voice about making the movie rather than the next series. i would have loved to see what they could have done with Phase II, in less than a decade before ST TNG came out in the 80's.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII Před 4 lety

      They did a number of sci fi TV series for a short time after Star Wars but none of them lasted past 2 seasons!
      You know why they didn't last and create the impact Star Trek did? They weren't thought out well enough, the scripts were rushed, and they had issues aggravated by demands for better special effects (at least half as good as Star Wars; arguably the effects in the Galactica pilot/1978 were as good as Star Wars) and getting episodes out on schedule and on-budget. They had the same problems that dogged the original Star Trek a decade earlier BUT no Gene Roddenberry, no Gene L Coon, no Robert Justman, no Herb Sohl. A few of these shows have their fans and are cult favorites but their fanbase is nowhere near as big as Star Trek's because they weren't as thoughtful and they didn't hit TV at the right time.
      Star Trek Phase II had mediocre scripts. The changes they were making were not enough and it would have looked 1960s Star Trek with a mild paint job which was NOT enough after Star Wars. Sorry -- that's reality.
      The only way you could match Star Wars and establish a revamped aesthetic for Star Trek that moved beyond the 1960s series was a motion picture with a bigger budget. A TV series was not going to cut it. Heck, in 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey pretty much destroyed any myth that the original Star Trek was state of the art/cutting edge! It had far better sets AND generally more convincing special effects than the Star Trek TV series!
      The best thing that you can say about Star Trek's sets were that in retrospect is that they were clever within the confines of its budget and TV limitations. The basic designs were thought out well enough that they scaled up well for the movies and sequel TV series; the basic "rightness" was always there -- they just needed more time and budget to get beyond a plywood look!
      They adapted a few of the episodes for Phase II into TNG Season 2 during the writer's strike but they weren't very good episodes.
      I think they had to go the motion picture route to produce a higher visual level. Were the scripts in the movies as good as the original series? Arguably no, at least half the films were pretty good and even the "bad" installments were truer Star Trek than what's being produced now.
      Just continuing onward from the 1960s with the same basic look, same costumes, with no visual upgrades ON TOP OF the obvious script problems Phase II (and later STTMP) had would not have helped the matter. Nobody disagrees that STTMP was a beautiful-looking even if it had a very flawed script.

      @@AvengerII yep, i agree. with ST TMP the most they had going for it was the special effects. ST Wrath of Kahn was over the top with plot as well as sp-ef, and arguably the best of the Trek movies.

      @@AvengerII oh, forgot. regarding 1968 2001 Space Odyssey set designs and effects? go even further back to 1956 Forbidden Planet was insane with the special effects for its time. even by today's CG standardized effects, this one was just amazing, 21 years before SW ever came out. I remember the first time I saw Forbidden Planet on TV when i was 7 years old, really too young to understand what was going on, but that ID monster scared the hell out of me. gave me nightmares for years!

    SPOILER:
    I'm a bit sceptical about the Ferengi having contact with a Federation ship in the 23rd century. I'm also a little bit sceptical about their appearance in ENT, although you could maintain continuity a bit by saying that the Ferengi haven't identified themselves as such in ENT. I'm interested to see how you guys and gals will handle it this time.
    But I'm also wondering a bit why the Orions weren't used instead.

    The Phase II design is pretty nice. I like to think of it as a test-bed, a refit of a Bonhomme Richard class with Block I Warp nacelles (Block II is what we see on the TMP Enterprise), modified torpedo launchers that were further refined for TMP Enterprise, etc, etc.....

    Good teaser, love the Phase II variant. But one thing, the Ferengi were not known until the 24th Century, and even then, nobody knew anything about them until they were encountered by the crew of the Enterprise D. That was something mentioned both in Encounter at Farpoint and in the episode 'The Last Outpost', where the Enterprise D crew finally met up with the Ferengi.
