  • Correction: early in the video when I mention the rear "bulkhead" is common across all YZ10s, what I had meant to say was the magnesium motor mount.

I had a couple of these in ~1990. I was heavy into RC cars back then, primarily buggies, like the RC10 and its competitor, Losi (forget the name), but this YZ10 was my favorite of the bunch. AWD made this thing nothing short of amazing. They were much more complicated than the RC10, but damn, they were fun. I was one of those guys who would tear down the car after every use. I mean down to bare bones and I'd rebuild the shocks, clean or replace bearings, the motor... almost OCD. I spent a LOT of time at hobby shops back then, usually praying they had replacement parts, because God knows, I went through them. I upgraded the crap out of all of them, so that helped a bit. Ah, the good old days.

Very very very very rare to get a new in box 870C. I've seen a few pop up on eBay for $800+. You can find used ones in the $200-300 range (I was really lucky to get mine for $30, considering the condition and parts it came with...just needed some cleaning). I will eventually make a follow-up video, since I have finished the battery tray (for lipos) and made some tweaks to get more droop in the suspension.

That body is actually the body that was on the Japan yz10's. They imported a different style body on the 870c to appeal more to the american market.

RC Car Action ran a comparison test with the Yokomo C4 and 3 other buggies. I never saw it available in any store. Shortly later, Yokomo released the YZ-10. It was the first Yokomo product that I saw that was widely available in stores. Even though it was relatively heavy compared to most other 4WD buggies, it was actually very fast.

I believe back in the 80s Yokomo had a partnership with Team Associated. Yokomo made the 4WDs and Associated made the 2WDs.

Today's price for a US yz10 complete in your opinion to not over pay

That is highly dependent on the generation and condition. Generically, though, a good condition 870c with original parts and a few hop-ups (AE shocks, Jammin' upper deck, maybe some Andy's arms) should go for around $300-$400. Certainly less than $300, or even less than $200, if there are clear signs of wear/slop/rust. Those are all for runners, though. A beautifully mint build will of course go for more, due to the rarity of mint parts.

I've started dusting off my old RC models and I actually have an early 90's YZ-10
I stopped running it because replacement parts became almost impossible to get and when I finally found some they were extremely expensive.
How have you managed to get parts for it? I mainly have issues with front wheel blocks the threading where the Kingpin goes are worn out.

Basically, I get spare parts by finding chassis in poor condition, which I end up dismantling for parts. Occasionally, I find a chassis that the owner includes with a bunch of parts. You just have to keep searching and eventually you find something...

As for the front steering blocks, if you are referring to the black plastic parts, you can deal with the stripped threads by replacing the kingpin with a 4x8mm hex screw. Basically, you end up replacing the stripped thread with a larger thread. It takes a bit of effort to get the 4mm screw thread in there, but once it's in, it holds nice and snug.

      doctormosfet Thanks for the tips
I've since discovered there is a lot of original parts for sale on ebay so there is still hope.
I've bought a new RC to kit up and doing the Yokomo as a side project after I get the new one running.
Have fun with your vintage! It truly is an awesome buggy

how much do they cost these days... I have one with manual, box, and many many extras... haven't used it since 1990. Got tons of stuff with it.

The price on the 870c tends to vary, but you can check the eBay listings for sold items and get a rough idea. If yours is in good condition, and with the spares, it should be worth a pretty penny.
