  • The rise of antisemitism on college campuses is disturbing and threatening to Jewish students, faculty, and staff. Since the barbaric attack on October 7, antisemitism-verging on support for Hamas terrorism-has been pervasive at Columbia, and university administrators have been left paralyzed in response.
Chairwoman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee Virginia Foxx (R-NC) joined Greta Van Susteren on Newsmax to discuss the Committee's antisemitsm hearing, where Members demanded accountability from the top members of Columbia leadership, including President Minouche Shafik, for the disturbing wave of antisemitic harassment and discrimination engulfing Columbia University's campus.

In a traditional First Amendment forum, all of this is permitted. Have you forgotten the Westboro Baptist Church case? Or RAV v. City of St. Paul? Both involved odious speech and expression. The speakers won in both.
Targeting people individually, where they work or study or live, is entirely different. That is harassment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and so forth. If it rises to the level of true threats or intimidation, it's a crime: summon the police.
Where is Nadine Strossen, now that we desperately need her to speak out? The Constitution isn't a Miss Manners tome.
(And don't tell me Columbia is private: every private university has incorporated First Amendment jurisprudence into its bylaws, by choice.)

@@larynOneka8080Sounds like you might need a cup of tea and a nap. Wailing all sorts of assumptions there. But anyhow, quite the opposite absolutely fundamentally believe in free speech. Where free speech becomes "violence " is when it is exercised in an abusivre, intimidating or threatening manner towards others. When it calls for physical harm to others or other societal groups. When the right is utilised to obstruct the rights of others do go about their liberty free of intimidation, threats or "obstruction" in 'shared public space'. Free speech comes with civil responsibilitiest. The previous lack of policing regarding the antisocial manner in which people have chosen to express their free speech has led to, on this occasion, intervention. Thats because civil society is fedup with the disrespect shown towards others rights who may think differently and their freedom to do so. Rights are not oneway traffic we all have them. Silencing and oppressing others rights with calls for harm or social obstruction is not exercising free speech its abuse. Oddly enought it is the students who often react like words are violence unable to tolerate a conversation regarding contested concepts, often literally tantruming at others who do not share their view. Columbia along with many other Universities is caught between a rock and a hard place over the Palestinian/Gaza issue. Certainly the actions of the Israeli government need to be analyzed critically with reference to what the world sought to achieve with the Geneva Conventions after the atrocities of World War II. A University should be a place where reasonable discussion and analysis of the issue can occur, which is why the principle of academic freedom is so important not only to scholarship but to providing the world with objective critique of issues that determine global justice and morality.
However, due to the high costs related to maintaining universities, they absolutely need government funding to survive financially. Which means they must be very conscious of not offending the political ideologies of the ruling political parties that control the government bodies that appropriate and disburse government funding for universities. Considering how many elected Federal officials in the US receive campaign donations from funding sources with ties to or affinities with the Israeli government, it is inevitable that there is a strong political force in the US government that does not want to see the kind of objective critique of the Israeli government that their actions against the Palestinian people truly deserve.
Which puts a university and its administrators and trustees in a very difficult position. If they fulfill their institutional role as a venue for honest and open analysis of world problems, they jeopardize the funding that keeps them open. Yet without their apolitical research and its conclusions, where else is the world able to find reason to unite against a country or ideology that violates the standards of law and ethics that are a necessary part of civil society ?
This is yet another baneful consequence of the corrupting influence of re-election fundraising that grossly distorts the effective governance of society. We see it manifest in fiscal irresponsibility, belligerent defense policies, and ineffective government oversight of our environment, our foods, and our medicines. The populations of democracies the world over need to figure out some way to stop this corrupting influence of money in politics and government, lest government ceases to be the bulwark it needs to be against societal disorder. How can the people of the world community consider themselves to be at all civilized if for the sake of money the propagation of war and genocide is permitted to occur unabated and unpunished ? Its a travesty that violates every good act that humanity has taken over the centuries to better its own plight in this world.
When the role of money in government prevents good people from exposing wrongful action in the hope of correcting it for the betterment of the collective condition of humanity on earth, then politics has gone too far and needs to be curtailed by the people who are governed. Which is the real message being sent by the protesters at Columbia and elsewhere, whether they realize it or not. The time has come for universities and their leaders to stand up to the government that funds them and demand the freedom to research the world's problems without fear of government reprisal. Because inevitably, if the universities do not take a stand on the side of righteousness and social order, there will be little reason for them to exist anyway. So if they are going to become extinct institutions that devolve into government propaganda factories, they should at least go down on the side of justice. And then just maybe they will find that the people of their respective countries will save them from the oppression of government that cares about money more than justice and order.

Best article I have read in ages. Everything so aptly put. Its ok for these corrupt legislators, presidents and prime ministers to treacherously the steal their counties' money and send it to pay for a foreign country 's genocide but it is not okay for the university presidents not to interfere with kids shouting at each other about it on the campuses. Laws passed in to criminalize BDS in America. BDS is how the weak demonstrate their displeasure in a non violent way. There's a lot wrong with the way USA is structured and operates at the moment but but it is up to its own citizen's to take back their country from "State Capture" facilitated by corrupt "representatives"
