Thank you for explaining the differences. I so far have only created black and white pet portrait drawings. I've been wanting to start creating color portraits. Someone gave me a set of colored pencils but after watching this video I'm going buy a pastel pencil set and pastel paper. I was also thinking about trying oil painting but the oil based pastel pencils is a great choice for me because of the blending and light color over dark color properties it has that oil paints do. Pastel pencils can give a oil painting look without the extra cost and extra mess of oil painting.
Exactly, pastel pencils aren’t too messy yet you can layer light colours over the top of darker colours which is how I love to work. I hope you enjoy the pastel pencils when you start using them 😀♥️
i think i prefer pastel over coloured pencils. coloured pencils are such a slow medium for me thanks for making this video
Yes I 100% agree with this! Using pastels is so much faster :)
I usally use pastel pencils but I do want to try coloured pencils, when I can afford them I will probably give faber castell polychromos a go 😊 This is a really useful video, Thank you 💞
They’re both great in their own ways 🥰 I’m glad you enjoyed the video! ♥️
Awesomely helpful video! Thanks for sharing!
No problem, I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Brilliant video, thank you
Great video! Thank you.
A note about your lighting.
Your hand casts a shadow on the paper where you are applying the pigment.
Thank you - I am aware :) I was only using the lights I had access to at the time of filming so I had to make do
A great comparison and a clear detailed explanation. I benefited a lot. A wonderful channel that deserves to be supported. Keep it up. Greetings
I’m so glad you found the video helpful! 😊
@@lottielouiseart Thank you and glad to contact you
Great information. Thank you for posting
I’m glad you liked the video! 😁
very informative. thanks!
No problem, thanks for watching 😀
Thank you this is very helpful, color has been intimidating cause i only do charcoal but i will give pastel a try. Pastel also means cake in spanish so pastel wins lol
Hopefully you will enjoy working with pastels, I love them!
Oooo nice haha I didn’t know that 🤣 nice fun fact to know!
@@lottielouiseart if you get to read this, since I last commented, I’ve had a dilemma with drawing. I’m okay at it but as far as a career, I don’t know how I could make it profitable & like everyone I need to know id be financially good in life.
It’s been this way for a while now & I never seem to know what to do. Drawing has always felt like a chore to me but I go back to it cause it’s the only thing I’m decent at & when I am drawing, i become worried about how to make good money with it.
Not experienced enough to make courses, I lack of much knowledge to make art tutorial content & that’s my dilemma there, I just end up aimlessly drawing and post it on instagram to say “look what I drew” for no one to notice and I remain broke
Just feels like I’m wasting life away
Any advice for my situation?
Sorry for such a long comment
Right now i am using colored pencils and i love them but thinking on trying pastels soon. Thanks very informative.
I love pastels so much! Im glad you found the video helpful 😊
❤❤❤
Thanks for explaining the difference between pastel pencils and conventional oil-based or wax-based coloured pencils. Could you please also explain the difference between pastel pencils and watercolour pencils? Thanks in advance for your response.
That’s definitely something I can make a video on at some point :D
Watercolour pencils are water soluble so you can add water to blend them and create a paint-like look 😊
Thank You for this video becausee I also didn't know the difference. Can you use them in a coloring book? I have seen many use them in coloring their drawings.🎨
I don’t think pastel pencils would work very well in colouring books due to the smooth paper, but they’d probably work well for soft blended backgrounds 🥰
Can you recommend a carrying case for a pastel pencil collection of about 48 pencils? My cardboard box broke!
I still use the original boxes the pastels come in - I’ve not needed to buy any cases yet 😀 sorry I can’t be of more help x
which one is more time consuming?
Coloured pencils are definitely more time consuming :)
I paid £50 for Caran D'Ache and they basically fall apart whenever I try to sharpen them. SO frustrating.
Yeah you have to be really careful with them because they’re really soft! That’s the downside 😁
i might be using the wrong paper, thanks for mentioning that. EDIT: what kind of paper were you using?
For pastels I use the Clairefontaine pastelmat paper 😊 for coloured pencils I use the Fabriano Artistico hot pressed watercolour paper 😊
Past is way better. Is like painting with gouache or oil is more like that. For me
Yes I prefer pastels too! I find them more versatile 😀
For me pastels is easy to fix mistakes than color pencil.
Yes definitely I agree! :)
