    LYRICS:
    On a warm summer's evening
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
    So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
    The boredom overtook us
    And he began to speak
He said, "Son, I've made a life
    Out of readin' people's faces
    Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
    I'll give you some advice"
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
    Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his face lost all expression
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
    Know when to fold 'em
    Know when to walk away
    And know when to run
    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done
    Every gambler knows
    That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
    And knowin' what to keep
    'Cause every hand's a winner
    And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is to die in your sleep"
    And when he'd finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
    Crushed out his cigarette
    Faded off to sleep
    And somewhere in the darkness
    The gambler he broke even
    But in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep
You've got to know when to hold 'em
    Know when to fold 'em
    Know when to walk away
    And know when to run
    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done
You've got to know when to hold 'em (when to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em (when to fold 'em)
    Know when to walk away
    And know when to run
    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done
You've got to know when to hold 'em
    Know when to fold 'em
    Know when to walk away
    And know when to run
    You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
    When the dealin's done

  • @lindseyschuster8895

Kenny died the week of the 2020 shutdown. He knew when to fold 'em.

This song says a lot more than teaching a gambler to play

  • @danceswithcomicbooks7733

This is depressing. The song has more meaning than people in your lives dying. Its about how to live life. Yet everyone here thinks its just about death and how theyve lost family members. No its not

Timeless words of wisdom. As a management consultant who cared too much about my clients and my job, I spent far too long chasing lost causes, trying to help people who refused to listen, refused to be helped and who would never change. Like Don Quixote I tilted at too many windmills and never knew when to walk away. I wasted so much emotional energy at much cost to my health and learned so much of Kenny Rogers' advice the hard way. This song is truly an ace that you can keep.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Not just this song, but all those songs we grew up with in the 60's, 70's and 80's ...I know every generation says it, but seriously look at the world now. We are like aliens, those of us who grew up with this music. The world is so different now. What they sing about, what they speak about -- it's mostly nothing ...it's foreign ...thank God I grew up in the 70's and 80's ...I'm lucky, I got to live through that time of innocence and beauty. No phone glued to my hand. Pinball and ten pin bowling was as hardcore as it got lol ..and the music just kept feeding the soul
