  • Hey there people
Here you have a little video, where i do some inspection and maintenance work on the gearselector in my w210 E50 Amg.
I Do this job because of two things.Inspecting and maintaining the selector mechanism, but also replacing the gearselector switch module.
This is to be seen as a preventative maintenance thing in my case,,as i want to make every small thing in perfect condtion on my car.
I hope you enjoy the video
    Greetings from Norway

Under rated video. Nothing I've seen that shows the shift mechanism taken apart. I will be making a similar video soon!

@@TheCarTakerGarage it shows pretty much al you need to see. I used the video to help me see how the mechanism and switch get separated. I was able to open the switch on a 1999 mercedes and repair the contactors inside so it woukd recognise all gear positions of the lever. Thank you for making the video as without it, I woukd have been going in blind and maybe ended up taking much longer to repair.

Removal portion of video was very helpful. I was able to pull this assembly at the junkyard. It took about 1.5 hours to swap in. Yes, yes, new module is always better. However, I did not have to disassemble the shifter so the install was a snap. Not bad for $25!
EDIT ADD: New (to me) shifter module cured cold temp shifting issue. Been out in 40 degree temps and the transmission shifts fine just after starting up. It used to stay in 1st until warmed up. Also display lights work which is an indicator that module is healthy. Lights were out previously.

Thank you for this demonstration and these explanations.
Having problems I changed the torque converter but it did not solve anything. I hope it comes from this mod. I'll try.
I want the same cup holder 😂

Would have been more helpful if you'd actually shown replacement of the switch as well as disassembly and reassembly of the entire module. Was very helpful as far as getting the shifter module out of the car.

in all due respect...if you cannot make that out your own...then ...you should not be doing this job.And also...what is shown in the video and in my videos, are never 100 percent step by step stuff. This video is no different. But to be honest..it shows pretty much everything you need to know ..at least if you cannot use this info to make this happen..then...that is to bad.Thank you for watching anyways ;) Have a good one :)

Hello Stefan. Great video. It is probably the first video out there on youtube about W210 gear switch. I had some issues to my gear switch also. Some years ago i checked it wis star diagnosis and it says code: P1833, which MB explains so: P1833 Transmission Transfer Case Differential Lock-Up Solenoid Open Circuit - From the dealer i was told that this fault can stuck the selector on P. But it was 4 years ago and after that my AT operates very well. Do you know anything about this fault?

Heyy David.Thank you so much my friend :) Yes..i havent seen any videos about the switch itself..so thats kinda cool. Was about time to put one out there :) Hm.....Is your car a 4matic?since you say it is "Transmission Transfer Case Differential Lock up?....i do think it is an "translation "fault...p1832 at least has to do with the shift module...so...p1833...can also have to do with this.I cannot find my faultcode sheet at the moment.I just did a quick search. If it is the lock solenoid(as what you wrote did say Lock up solenoid ..also )..it can make the car not shift out of Park yes....the solenoid is the solenoid i pointed out in the video...on the right hand side of the gear selector .I have not seen many of these solenoids go bad..but it can happen. But not often.Even the shift modules does not really go bad often..but i just wanted to replace it as it is a very important part you know :)

Thank you Stefan. No my E430 is RWD, i think this code means some issues about solenoid you pointed. Can you say is it possible to change this solenoid? I also was thinking to pick some 722.6 W210 gear selector whole, there are dozens of them available online and save it as a spare.

Stefan. My w210 reverse lights randomly work when I wiggle the gear selector. Is that module you replaced also control the reverse lights ? I think that plug with 2 grey wires might be for the reverse.
The previous own I think must have spilt soda down the selector.

    • @TheCarTakerGarage
      @TheCarTakerGarage  Před 2 lety +1

hey there. It depends on which type of w210 you have. They are different from 1995 -1996, and from 1996 -1997, and from 1997 and upwards.I cannot remember what controls them for sure..but i am 99.99 percent sure it is the bottom connector on the selector switch..that has the two grey wires on it,,that is the connector for the backup /Reverse light :) Try to disconnect the two pin connector to see if it stops working completely :) Best regards,Stefan

@@paulr4784 No problem :) Another thing is that..if i am not mistaken..The problem with the newer selectors is that you cannot replace the switch only...you need to replace the whole gear selector.,Which kinda sucks..But just see how it goes :)

    Greetings,
in my W210 E250 1997 as soon as you touch the W/S button the car works badly, when I insert R or D the automatic transmission gives a jerk, and only R (Reverse) works and with the selector on D it only goes forward in First gear , the mechatronics solved it with the Diagnosis, but the button was touched again by mistake which went from S to W and the problem returned. the mechatronic advises me to buy a complete used gear selector of any model, the important thing is that it is W210, I would like him to change only the defective component with a new spare part, if someone has had the same problem as me and solved it
    I accept advice,
    Thanks in advance

@@TheCarTakerGarage Hi Stefan, I am in Australia and have a W210 e230 WITH A 722.6 at. iT HAS DECIDED TO START HOLDING IN 3 GEAR ( I THINK ITS 3RD BUT NOT ENTIRELY SURE. ) However I checked the AT fluid level and put 100ml of oil in as it was a bit low. Then I test drived the car and the transmission worked without fault. The about 2 days it got stuck in 3 rd gear againg and would not change. I can move the gear selector to Park and Neuteral and through all positions of the lever without any friction. But when I initially put car into D in thumps into a gear and if I move the selector lever ro any other gear position there is no down changing or up changing. Your video about the selector makes me think the module you replaced may be faulty. I also have an icarsoft V3 MB Scanner which brings up a fault code when scanning the Transmission control unit that says "Resistance is TOO Low - Selector Lever Coding is Occasionally invalid" Do you think this may be referring to the Gear Selector Module. My email is tiffy106@ozemail.com.au if you could reply with your thoughts I would be very appreciative. Look forwaed to hearing from you soon. Cheerz Stuart🤢
