When you hit the like button on a Gerald Undone video before even watching...you know you have a problem. But for real, great review Gerald. DZO seems to be making their mark in the budget friendly cinema lens space.
Just watched one of your first videos you made and wow... So much progress on 4 years. It's inspirational for me to see that progress in you and how far you've gotten. For my channel about at just about a year into CZcams it seems like I'm learning so much every time I make a video. Your channel has accelerated my learning curve tremendously and I appreciate all of the hard work you do to bring balanced reviews to us as viewers. Thanks Gerald.
@@geraldundone I am currently using a Sony a6000 for my videos with the kit lens but I'm looking at the Sony a7Siii but I am seeing the leaks of the FX3 and now I don't know what the hell to do. I'm hoping that the FX3 shoots raw and otherwise maintains a reasonable price. So disappointed in Canon right now because I like their glass and would prefer to stay in the Canon ecosystem, but really would like to have dual card slots recording video and the file sizes are tremendous. I'm also not a fan of my camera overheating. I would like it to remain reliable at all times, because the likelihood of it overheating at the worst possible moment is pretty high. I really don't feel like spending the money on a ton of CF Express cards, and after watching your videos on the Sony's realizing that they can shoot without the expensive cards and get most of the benefits is huge. I really wish that Sony would have the ability to control more from their touch screen like the Canon's do. but right now I'm focusing on lighting, and just got 2 of the new aperture 100x with a light dome II and the MC 4 light travel kit, which has been the biggest difference in my video quality thus far.
Just got my Full Vespid set a few week ago and I'm loving them a lot! They have a really beautiful focus roll off which makes your images look very cinematic and also makes skin very pleasing to film since the sharpness is not that high. High sharpness is not always the best, especially when you want cinematic images.
I agree with your aesthetic observation, but it's worth noting that you can do a lot of things to soften an image on set or in post if you want that look for a particular scene or shot, but you cannot make an image which is softer than you like sharper in a pleasing way. These lenses look awesome though. Definitely considering picking up a set so thank you for your recommendation. :)
Nick, why waste time in post. I feel a lot of new filmmakers rely on the cliche modern saying, “let’s fix it in post!” Time is money. Get it right the first time. I say screw the post production fix, it’s a bad habit to get in. Just my opinion. Everyone has their way of doing things.
@@wayner2560 well, because if you're doing vfx or compositing... you want the raw sharpness. A blur node in Resolve is real-time. It adds zero time during grading.

Finally...Gerald you've "undone" it again! I've been waiting for a review on these lenses forever. I recently picked the Meike 50mm Cine FF T2.1, and decided to stick with that range on the Sigma fp (It shoots BRAW). Hopefully they will look/cut consistent with the Meike MFT 2.2 lenses on my BMP4Ks. Great content that is right to the point...love it.
Great video as usual! It's always interesting to see more simple optic designs compared against modern lenses especially in the photo space. A certain level of softness is usually really pleasing and things like that cat eye bokeh are sometimes sought after in the cinema space with lenses like the Clavius lenses even having a fake insert for it. I really like the overall look of the Vespids and I agree they are probably some of the best value lenses in this segment. I'm on a waitlist for an upcoming set from Dulens (the APO Mini Primes) and their optic designer is taking heavy influence from vintage cinema lenses (retrofocus, double-glauss, etc..). They breath like Ultra Primes, have a rainbow circle flare, bokeh deformations, they are very "imperfect". An APO design though so no CA. I'm excited to compare the two when they ship. As well as compare them both against my cinemodded vintage sets like the Contax Zeiss and Mamiya Sekor C.
Thanks for this review :) The pricing is approaching that of vintage prime sets from the stills world like my favourite Contax Zeiss lenses, so I can definitely see the appeal to get a matched set with gears and full manual control already in place. A matte box will take care of most of the veiling flare so that's not a big deal in the cinema world.
The glare is actually pretty darn high. We paired these with the new BM 12k and you can tell in a lot of the videos we put out that they produce that wedding/dream hazy look when we expose for the Black magics (we push lights higher since the sensor is noise heavy).
Always like the cinema lenses. I have a Magic SLR 35mm t1.3 that has served me well over the past 2 years. Thinking of getting a macro for some better close up shots.
Thank you for such detailed review. I am looking forward to get a set of Vespid Primes, and now I am a bit confused of which mount should I chose that's more future prove and more versatile in-terms of working with other cameras.
I can stick with the Leica R and Contax Zeiss for a bit longer...and for a fraction of the price compared to these dzofilm lenses. Great review Gerald, thank you so much!

Ever since I got my first Veydra lens, and then Meike I've been trying to understand what makes them feel so cinematic. I have a theory that it has to do with well controlled Spherical Aberration creating really immediate smooth focus fall off but I really don't know at all. It would be fantastic to have that topic get the Gerald Undone treatment--see what objectively it is that makes some of those budget lenses that are purpose-built for cine (not rehoused stills like Sigma or Rokinon) just look so much more cinematic.
Or maybe this is just a category where there is no non-subjective answer. I have no idea. but I like the idea that all these traits that get described as cinematic or organic or filmic actually have scientific explanations to them.
@@husainfoolath4287 Overall I think I prefer the Meike lenses (but it's close). But they also don't have a full set out yet so if you need to shoot a feature or something now then DZO makes more sense. The telephoto DZOs are beautiful but the 25 and 35 just didn't do it for me when I rented them. They felt a little soulless. Honestly I think Meike's Super 35 lenses look even nicer than their Full Frame ones though so if your camera is Super 35 would 110% recommend getting their Super 35 lenses instead.
I am absolutely not a pro, but immediately said "that looks really off/soft, hmmm... I do not like that look" upon seeing footage through these lenses. Considering how much time/money is invested OTHER than camera equipment in a project that you are going to shoot, spending more on the lens that can undo all that investment is probably a good choice. Or am I missing something here? Where do these lenses make sense?
Give me a 25mm cine prime and I'm set. Best compression and very versatile if you are low budget and shooting guerrilla style on the go for indy film projects.
Great video, thanks Gerald. Have you used or thought of reviewing the Meike full frame cinema primes? Designed by the same people that made the Veydra lenses apparently.

Thanks for the review, I actually have a budget for only one lens which one should I buy first 35mm or 50mm ? I really need ur recommendation I don't have any lens.
Is it dumb to get a set of full frame cine lenses for my super35 sensor camera? Probably better to look for a set that was built for super35 yeah? so I'm not constantly dealing with crop factors
Thanks for this very helpful review. Couple of questions for you (or anyone who has used the 90mm macro). Is the focus breathing on the 90mm macro so bad you can't pull focus (in which case why would they put a focus ring on it!). And secondly, I've seen reviews of the Irix 150mm macro which says the focus so SO, SO sensitive, like a couple of mm on the focus ring equates to 20-30ft, making it almost impossible to nail the focus. How is the DZO 90mm on that front? Thanks in advance for any help.

Gerald, would you do a review of the Meike FF 50 vs the 50mm Vespid? So many options in this level of Cine lenses, and I have also thought about getting one of these as a owner operator, but no one has tested the Meike, Xeen and Vespid ... Just thought I would ask. ;) Thanks for the review overall.
Thanks for the review, I actually have a budget for only one lens which one should I buy first 35mm or 50mm ? I really need ur recommendation I don't have any lens.
Brilliant video Gerald! Any plans on FX3? :D
Do they match color and character with their Catta Ace zooms,???
Audio is 💯 legit 🙌
Would love to hear your opinion on their super 35 cine zooms, the pictors.
Okay I’m already out. Maybe it’s just me but where’s the 27mm and 40mm? The 40mm is a must in my opinion.
Interesting! Nice video ✌️
Can you please test SLR Magic's MicroPrime Cine lenses?
