    Brilliant racing.
    When I was 21 (1981) and just out of college I wanted an Elan, but way too expensive.
    So, I bought a MkIV Mini Marcos and gradually tweaked it as funds allowed. Road use only.
    In it's final form it had: 1380cc overbore, LCB exhaust, gas flowed head (as per Vizard book), front radiator, high final drive, Aldon dizzy, modified twin SU's, Cooper S discs (still marginal braking!!) central oil pick up, Cibie Oscars, oil cooler, etc.
    It was a flying machine, 500kg and about 90 BHP, it showed up the early hot hatches - Ford XR3's and Golf GTI's.
    The downside was big end shells and gearbox transfer gear bearings were only good for around 5000 miles!
    Great days being a hooligan on the quiet back roads in the Lake district and doing 12 car rallies at night.

    Can we just take a moment to appreciate how good of a driver Nick Swift is ? He has a pushrod 1.3 against a twin cam 1.6, both cars are very light but he still managed to scare the elan in corners.

      TheThunderwars dude. I got a serious man crush on ol’ Swifty. What a legend.

      What makes it even more amusing is how the pushrod 1275cc A-Series was said to reputedly be considered at one point by Colin Chapman as a possible alternative before the Ford Kent was used as the basis for the 1.6 Lotus Twin-Cam.

      Everyone knows an Elan doesn't corner as well as a Mini/Marcos.

    The Elan headlight comes up because they are held down by vacuum taken from the inlet manifold. The vacuum runs out when there is no depression in the inlet. That means he was absolutely flat out for good periods of time. As soon as he lifts the vac reappears and the light goes back down.

    I have only recently discovered Goodwood R&R and I am absolutely infatuated! The skill of these drivers is apparent immediately and a ROAD RACE!? Oh man...this is incredible!

    Incredible - and interesting seeing the tall and thin wheel/tireset vs the short and squat at their traction limits... and I love the "winking" headlight at 1:30!

    Nearly bought a Mini Marcos once . Bought a Ginetta G15 instead (they were both in the same place )

    • @TheThunderwars
      @TheThunderwars Před 5 lety +3

      Both were fine choices to be fair. However I think that a 1380cc engine Marcos would outspeed the G15 even with a high spec 875 or 998, the ginetta was a bit tricky to drive so in the hand of an amateur the Marcos will probably be a lot faster. If both have 998cc and good pilots then I don't know

    • @Ralph2
      @Ralph2 Před 4 lety +2

      Two of my favourites as well! I came closer to buying a Ginetta G15 than the Marcos, but in the end contented myself with a string of Imps and Minis, each one faster than the last (naturally!) PS The Unipower GT was the best of all IMHO. Absolutely tiny.

    Not my father's car, he used to race the 2.0 liters because the car and him driving it was to fast for his time. A well prepped mini marcos, capable of doing 20.000 rpm on the ignition points. almost 50 yrs ago. Have the proof, roundtimes of Zandvoort, not here for that. Love it!

    Also is the creme egg car a maximum mini technically?

    コーナーはマコースの方が良いがエランはストレートの伸びが良い。かなり面白いバトルだ。しかしそれほどグリップが良いとは思えないタイヤで全力バトルとは恐れ入った。

    How much 'development' is allowed on engines for this category of racing? I'm wondering about 8 port heads and fuel injection....

    • @theglumrant9477
      @theglumrant9477 Před 5 lety +1

      Paul Standeven I’d like to know whether the Marcos’s crank was checked for complicity. If it was revving to 9000, it would’ve been trick and I’m not sure about that

    • @paulstandeven8572
      @paulstandeven8572 Před 5 lety +2

      @@theglumrant9477 Nick Swift is the owner of Swiftune, a well known supplier of very hot race engines. If he got caught using illegal engines, it would not be good for his business. But as I posted earlier, I would like to know what the rules are for modifications to engines at Goodwood.

    • @theglumrant9477
      @theglumrant9477 Před 5 lety +1

      Paul Standeven that was my point (not put very well)...what ARE the regulations? As fast as I can see, you cannot actually get hold of anything definitive
