Too bad the taxpayers make such an investment and they never get anything back when the sale to "developers" happens.
That's an extremely good point, I suppose that they say the money from the sale goes into the city coffers,, but one would think that would put enough cash into the city to give people a little break on their property taxes or something.......
My dad was in the last senior class to graduate from Old Central. His name is scrawled somewhere in the clock tower.
The hill is a great place to watch 4th fireworks, not sure if the new owners will allow that going forward.
The drive up the hill on cold winter mornings is AMAZING.
the sunrise glowing through the fog off Lake Superior was always a nice start to the school day during dreary winter months.
Nice twist to the story. Always enjoy the channel.
I remember sleeping out in a tent on the edge of the football field overlooking the lift bridge and harbor for one night. It was for a charity bicycle ride from Hinckley to Duluth and back.. Hardest part was riding the bikes up that hill!
That’s a heck of a bike ride! I used to make that drive in my semi truck a few times a week on my way down to inver grove heights and even that seemed long!
Photographer from AZ here, I fell in love with Duluth when I drove up from St Paul to shoot a wedding in Tofte summer 2022. I’d really like to move there. Grew up in Connecticut and found so many close parallels between there and Duluth. We have the harbor live camera up on my wall at least once a week
Not to worry , if the Duluth school district is like most in Minnesota I’m sure there will soon be a bond referendum and a push to build a new school.
I last visited in summer of 21, it was heartbreaking to see the school abandoned like that; a few people were using the tennis courts at the time so at least a few tax payers were still getting the last of their value out of the facility.
Was able to peek into the commons area and the lunch room where so many memories were made; both at lunch and at the dances!
So sad. 😢
very nice sir. sure must be lots of money in DULUTH
Damn,, I knew Duluth was losing people but having to close a high school like that is really sad... Thanks for the video,, I noticed your love of history and especially the history of the railroads and I wonder,, do you appreciate the urban architecture of Old brick buildings,, industrial commercial or residential structures in the center of towns, obviously the oldest part of towns that still remain? Because I'm fascinated with historical or personal pictures that depict the central cities or Central areas of smaller towns, and then comparisons with today....
Yes, I enjoy old brick buildings and architecture. Hoping at some point I will get a few more videos of those posted.
Duluth's population is pretty stable these days. A decade ago the school system was overhalled. Central was closed and the two remaining high schools were expanded. Denfield serving the western half of the city, and East Highschool the east. East and Denfield being expanded and heavily remodeled.
Where do they go to school now?
Powers that be finally got their way and destroyed the cohesive bond of the central Duluth community they disliked since the early 1900’s.
By destroying the schools and splitting up the central community they gutted the power and strong community that once was there to counter the east side and poke friendly fun at the west; Central-Denfeld rivalry was fun and in good humor; Central-East not so much…
Hunt the Hunters and Pound the hounds!
For being sold to developers, not much developing is going on there.
The whole school board and superintendent should have been thrown behind bars for defrauding Duluth tax payers of $300M, and closing down school buildings so they could give sweetheart deals to their close buddies at Johnson controls.
It is a crime what happened to the facilities, they SHOULD have been repurposed for community use but instead were sold at a loss to developers for shiny new condos. Again, the board and superintendent should be behind bars for what they did to Duluth tax payers.
At least Old Central is on the historic register so the developers who got it for a song can’t tear it down completely.
Always a treat when you post!
