  • In his poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’, Faiz not only attacks the ultra-Islamic regime of Pakistani dictator Zia-ul-Haq but also invokes the power of the Eternal Truth and Justice. In this episode of Urdunama, The Quint’s Fabeha Syed explains the poem for you.
'Hum Dekhenge' was written as a mark of protest against the communal regime of Pakistani dictator Zia Ul Haq's government whose infamous 'Hudood Ordinances' had set limits of personal conduct. It was this Islamic fundamentalism that Faiz attacked using the very Islamic imagery in his poetry. Here is the poem explained for you.
Faiz’s iconic poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’ has always been borrowed by protesting voices across the globe. The poem calls out the oppressors of every age, ideology, and society. In this episode of Urdunama, The Quint’s Fabeha Syed explains the poem for you.

I am from Pakistan and I have never heard a better explanation for this poem. And I must say that every word of that explanation is correct. This poem is just about motivating people to have faith that one day this oppression will end and we will breath in free air. He wrote it against Zia rule and his oppression.

This is a beautiful explanation and loved every bit of it. I don't think faiz was an atheist or a complete believer. It is a huge statement to make that he was either one of it.
Although, Lauh-e-Azal is a Quranic metaphor, which refers to the eternal slate. Faiz using this as the opening of a hopeful poem to me suggests he did believe in God and he was hopeful.
The second stanza that creates an imagery of cotton mountains, the shaking earth and lightening is same as the imagery told in Quran about the day of judgement.
The third stanza in which faiz talks about emptying the Ka'aba and taking out the idols is an imagery of Muhammad (pbuh), who took the idols out after Fat'h-e-Makkah. Also, Mardood Haram means people who are barred out of sacred places. Which refers to the time when Muhammad (pbuh) was forced out of Makkah.
Last stanza: 'Bus naam rahega Allah ka' Faiz says that only God will remain and all the other powers will be thrown.
Furthermore, Faiz memorised 4 Parahs of Quran and in a interview he mentioned that he regret not memorising the whole Quran.
I'm not making a statement that Faiz was a believer. These are just some details to hold an opinion.

      @rational tv you're immature.
During the times of prophet Muhammed, the kuffar not just insulted him, almost choked him to death while he started spreading his message. He used to get wounded. Blood spilled all over his clothes. But later when he won makka, that day when the whole of kuffar was in fear or even were sure that the way they abused and harassed Prophet, he would give them capital punishment. And he said *it's the day of mercy, I FORGIVE YOU ALL.
And also later when he continued to be in power, there were blasphemy cases and he used to forgive them and instead would show how generous he was.
I'd suggest you to learn about him, by any non Muslim author only, if you're comfortable with them. Peace ✌️

Beautifully recited in tarannum and also explained well, but you actually *didn't explain correctly* the supposedly "controversial" line.
    जब अर्ज़-ए-ख़ुदा के काबे से
From the kaaba on God's earth.
    सब बुत उठवाए जाएँगे
All idols shall be taken out--this actually refers to the iconic moment when the idols of kaaba were taken out and mecca was liberated by Muhammed (in some 680 BC) and this marks the end of the "jahiliyyah" according to Islamic history. This was done because before this the kaaba was taken over by pagan Arab tribes and made into a shrine to local deities. All this marks the end of an oppressive regime.
The reason an atheist Faiz has to use religious symbolism because remember this song was written to oppose the fascist Islamist Zia-ul-haq government. So he was reclaiming Islam for the common people. So this is in reference to Islamic historical events and has nothing to with Hindusim. I am saddened to see that none of such erudite (even muslim) intellectuals mentioning this anywhere.

"He was reclaiming Islam" - EXACTLY, bro. I have tried to explain this to others. Because in literature (and other art forms) reclamation and subversion are frequently used methods of resistance and reinteroretation. Reclamation and subversion are techniques used by several African-American writers too. You subvert the ideology of the oppressor, or reclaim your identity from the oppressor - and this is through allusions, allegoroes, imagery, metaphors... This is such a wonderfully crafted piece of poetry. Wish people would have the patience to read it and recognise the literary excellence
