I think the real question was was that alan's cabaret costume or was he just wearing it because it was the 90s
Alan's costume for the show is much different than what he was wearing that night
It was the Kennedy Center Honors. His original costume is a bit too risque for something like that.
Alan Cummings seems more like a Miami Vice fashion guy, rather than this typical 1990s Trent Reznor style.
He wore a similar outfit when he accepted the Tony for his first go at the emcee
Maddie Barraclough costume was kinkier :). Saw the revival, fabulous, but still loved Joel in the film!
Two masters. Showing how a true star never copies anyone else.
I like this Loki play more than Thor Ragnarok
How special this is. Two completely different takes on the same musical performed by two incredible performers - performing the roles that made them famous - on the same stage.
This is catching lightening in a bottle.

Alan Cumming and Joel Gray: two Cabaret icons in one performance; what more can an audience like this ask for?
I love the clash in interpretations it just gives 2 completely different feelings. I LOVE THIS.
They are both great. No doubt about it and they played the role awesomely. I love how they pointed at each other when they said "happy to see you." It's like a father/son or mentor/protegee moment.
1998 feels like so long ago, yet just like yesterday at the same time. 🤣
Alan cumming just seems to own the stage in what ever he does
Aw, I didn't know Joel Grey was gonna come out! I got tears in my eyes
Me too! I thought i was the only one! There's nothing like the moment when the aged original starts singing! The feels!
I got tears in my eyes as well seeing Kander and Ebb happily (surprisingly?) applaud Grey's entrance. Best regards. P.s.: And seeing Bill Cosby as well as Bill Clinton looking over at Kander and Ebb with a "Did you expect that?" looks on their faces. dw
Probably the two most iconic performers to play this character, one: The original, and probably the most iconic. The other: The one to give us the character of Emcee we all know now. This character has changed so much from his first appearance, and it is probably thanks to these two lovely men here.
Emcee's vibe changes immediately from Alan to Joel. Two interpretations of the character that the actor makes work!
As a gay man, this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen haha. Alan and Joel omg
Willy Wilder I have a brother who is gay and you should see Cabaret referenced in the new movie Love Simon
@@manuelorozco7760 que yo sepa el señor grey no es gay.
@@manuelperales579 He actually did come out several years ago. :)
@@manuelperales579 I don’t know if he is gay or bi but he is definitely LGBTQ.
@@manuelperales579 Entonces no sabes mucho. :)
I still can't believe this song was once performed on The Muppets by Joel Grey. Tho toned down but like anything from og muppets it's still charming af.
Highly recommend reading Cumming's memoir "Baggage" for stories about this very performance.
Actually saw this on prime time when it was first broadcast back when, and gotta say, the Grey reveal was brilliant -- and very appropriate. Very well done presentation of how can one same piece and character be interpreted and performed in unique ways without losing its essence.
Don't you just love how he says, "Ladies...and Gentlemen". And his re-appearance in the final chorus was worthy of Nightcrawler. I could not see how he was able to sneak back on...which was the idea, after all, was it not? ^_*
I know I went back and still couldn't see him sneak in
I love Alan Cumming, but when Joel Grey takes the stage... just WOW.
He commands the stage and becomes the center of attention. And his voice just rings out amazing
I love the way Joel Grey slows down the first line to the song in his entrance. Like he is saying, and now for the moment yall was waiting for! that or he was trying to sing past the applause. lol either way its a beautiful change
1:55 What a duo
Love when Joel comes out omg so coollll
that pimp step at 2:16 though lol... can't tell you how many times I watched that trying to get that down lol
Same
Saaaame
2:48 is so perfect
Just genius. Two great takes on a classic role. Props too to Eddie Redmayne who's recently managed to produce a performance that lives up to theirs.
Only a seedy and slightly sinister gay man could sell illicit female flesh with such coolness and flair. Bravo Alan Cumming and Joel Gray!
Lol! Yes! I love it!
I love your comment
Emcee is bixesual tho
@@karamatsugirl7726 Depends on the setting. Joel's Emcee is widely regarded as asexual, Alan's is clearly bisexual, leaning towards gay,but the Emcee has always been more of an allegory of the people who tried to ignore problems (like the Nazis) with good times, and how that doesn't work (for example, the revival ending, where Emcee wears a concentration camp uniform).

17 years later and I'm still astonished.
that made me so emotional oh my gosh
I cannot love this too much. Joel Grey is an icon. Alan Cumming is wonderful, but even he can't best the original.
how amazing- two firecrackers performing together. can't believe i'm only seeing it for the first time now.
on another note, the camera should've remained on stage. i dont want to see bill cosby's rapey face or clinton's cheating face.
Hahaha I love the bit about Bill Cosby and Bill Clinton.
+sydandtaytum Hah, was just going to comment that they better upload a new version for the very same reason.
this was in 98 or 99. they were the names back then.
+sydandtaytum LOL!
My actual favourite video on the internet
2:48 I can't get over that laugh mannn
I was enjoying the performance but as soon as Joel Grey appeared it really made me smile. He was so full of energy and fun. Loved it.
I love this two legends singing an awesome song
Alan Cumming is magnificent and seeing Joel appear was powerful
Best movie musical ever, I was lucky enough to see the revival with Alan!
I can't believe that not even seeing 'Wilkommen' from 'Cabaret' performed with the dancers from 'Chicago' clued me into the fact that both shows were created by the same two team.
I love Joel so much! He is the best xxx
Alan is dressed much more like what an Emcee at a German cabaret at the top of the 1930's would dress like (even though what he's wearing here is not at all what he actually wears for performances. Cabarets at that point in German history reflected a homosexual community that was seeing a decreasing level of social acceptance for obvious rising political reasons, thus they were a place where those within that community could be themselves (i.e. the line about leaving troubles "out there"). Alan's physical representation of Emcee embraces the outward sexuality one would show in that position. Not saying Joel's interpretation is bad, it's its own form of good. Alan's is just much more authentic and ultimately poignant.
We love historic facts and representation on this server
Hey Kennedy Center Honors, I have a question: Why hasn’t Ms Minnelli been awarded yet? It’s long overdue!
Love Simon sent me here. A spectacular performance by the two Masters of Ceremony!
joel grey is the master of my whole world
I love how incredibly toned down it was for this performance.
CallMeKes Me too probably for the tv audience. Plus I don't do strip acts.
Hallo stranger!
WOW!!!!
I love Alan Cumming, he is a fantastic actor but no one, absolutely no one is The MC but Joel Grey.
Well, that was iconic af. Love it.
Wow! Truly 3 remarkable minutes.
This is perfect in every way
Fantastic!!!!!! Bravoooooooooooooooo..
Just BRILLIANT!
That was superb.
this was amazing
Did anybody notice the key change. It was a lot lower then usual when Alan sang it but the it changed to the key it is in in the show when Joel sang it. Did anybody else notice that or am I going crazy.
This is so awesome! The only bad thing is seeing Bill Cosby with President Clinton....ish.
Birds of a feather.
Kind of a perfect snapshot of the weirdly progressive/regressive 90s era...
Agreed. The way Bill Cosby looks at the dancers, I don't want to think about it but he almost certainly managed to get one of these poor women we're watching alone later on. It's sickening to think about.
Wow! ❤❤
A Fantastic performance! Well done! Bravo!
I know it is late and years on but it is still YUM
Nothing personal against Alan but Joel's still the Emcee for me. That laugh at 2:47 is just perfect.
That was so smooth, omg
OMG, this is so amazing and betiful!
🥺💜
I love this 💜
Despues de ver esta espectacular presentacion, puedo morir en paz
LOVE IT!
This makes me so happy
Yes, brilliant!
this just shows how much better Alan was at the role and how much deeper her made it. JOel was the first but Alan is the best
THE: 'Walter Cronkite' introduces Alan Cummings for Cabaret skit AND Joel Grey also appears? THE: 'Bills' Cosby with Clinton clap for them? Let me collect my brain 🧠 parts- I just blew my mind!
Excellent!
What a treasure!
Lucky to see Cabaret with Cumming as MC, Studio 54 was the venue. He was amazing!
AMAZING
I love this too much
Magical!
Oh boy, he is too adorable. This world needs more Alan Cummings singing.
I had the biggest crush on him when I was little lol
Woah!! Plot twist!!
Simply great.
WOW
ICONIC
Wait for it!
lost for words, except for superb
So icONIC
Спасибо 💐💐
Omg I love this new weezer song
1:55 Bill Cosby checking to see if his next victim is snoring yet
This is epic!
OMG the original can't be beat. he is the same!
💕
Joel Grey saves the day, like Sean Connery saved it in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Alan Cumming, Walter Croncite once mentioned your name...
Bless God. Because, what should be, the voice of God spoke your name.
👍❤️👍
This is good singing.
They censored Alan so much they didn't even let him wear the makeup 😭
I mean... is there are more interesting role than the Emcee..?? Both are outstanding. Truly showing that less is more. It is so interesting to me that THIS performance is connecting to the Third Reich.
Who is the incredibly hot blonde (short haired) just over Alan's right shoulder at the beginning? Incredible dancer body!
Right? I was blown away as well.
Ikr! Im straight and she is so sexy. What a beautiful body
The male dancers look like they were the original dancers from the revival of 'Chicago' with Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth.
Their video is beautiful and I have included it in the "Album of the movie Stars, thank you to share it, it can look for it in Internet writing "Album de las Estrellas de Cine" or "Tribute Actress Famous" or "Banco de Cine" and look for in the alphabet of the ALBUM for the initial letter of the star of this videotape A AL nº 80 here their videotape are.
Up in it paginates it where their video is there is a connection to "Listado de Honor" make click and once inside of it pulses in the LISTING of HONOR of the center, the name of its CHANNEL is already logged, congratulation and thank you.
Where is the rest of the number with Liza Minelli and Chita Rivera?
Although I prefer Alan Cumming, Joel Gray's entrance here was the best! It's exactly the same feeling as seeing a classic TOS character like Spock or Scotty step out of the shadows in a TNG episode.
That shot of Bill Cosby in the audience though almost ruined this for me.
I had to ignore pill cosby, but it was so interesting how much Joel's energy changed the show. He was perfect
Joel Gray is a bit like caricature.
Bill Cosby probably making some plans about the chorus girls during this
shock me!
