- With Prime Video's Fallout series now streaming, Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) is stepping into yet another notable piece of pop-cultural history. Based on the massively popular Bethesda video games, Fallout will take viewers out of the Vault-Tec shelter and into the Wasteland, from executive producer and director Jonathan Nolan (Westworld) and co-writers and showrunners Graham Wagner (Portlandia) and Geneva Robertston-Dworet (Captain Marvel). MacLachlan, who's a repeat collaborator of acclaimed filmmaker David Lynch (Blue Velvet), teases that the show and his character, Overseer Hank, give Lynchian vibes.
Known for the surreal and ominous, Lynch is an unexpected but welcome vibe to the Fallout universe. Likewise, MacLachlan hints that there's more than meets the eye to his own character, the father of Ella Purnell's (Yellowjackets) Lucy and Vault 33 leader. In addition to Hank and Lucy, the adaptation series also stars Aaron Moten (Disjointed), Walton Goggins (Justified), Moises Arias (Ender's Game), and Michael Emerson (Lost).
In this interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, MacLachlan shares what he loves about the show and playing Hank, how he got involved, and how much he knew about his arc ahead of time. The Twin Peaks alum also discusses what it was like being a part of a "network television grenade," why he's so excited for Pixar's Inside Out 2, and shares a story from the set of Dune (1984).

You can tell he really wants to work with a David Lynch like director again. It’s too bad he’s one of a kind.
some of us would love to see a Lynch directed episode
i know David Lynch i can hook him up
Hey Mom, Paul is playing with atomics again…
Mom: Don't break the convention sweetie
First Paul Atreides.
The sense of honor and respect is felt! I've only played a little of three Fallout titles: Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4. I haven't gotten very far in New Vegas or Fallout 4 yet, but for what I played in Fallout 3 I feel they pulled some plot elements to give a good base in creating the Amazon series. And so much of the games are for sure built right into the series like it's the same lived-in world as you game. Any fan of the Fallout games couldn't have asked for a better adaptation, it's brilliant, and I can't wait for season 2!
It's so refreshing to see how the people involved are considerate of the fans (aka the people who made the franchise a success to begin with)
Twin Peaks!
I am very happy this legend has been immortalized into Fallout
The quizach hadirach himself!
I LOVE Twin Peaks and I loved the Fallout games when I was younger. Having Kyle in such a big role for a Fallout story is aaaaweesome :)
While watching Fsllout I kept wishing they had got David Lynch to direct it
That was an awesome interview.
It dint have these “what would you take into a vault kind of question”.
But actually, really good and interesting… well, question.
About the art, the job and just working with lynch. And of course the brilliant show itself.
It’s so much more interesting and entertaining to see actors and actresses having a conversation (with a good host) instead of just being asked stupid question.
I've been a fan of the franchise forever. They did a great job. But inevitably, people will nitpick.
Kyle did it proud, a fine performance among many good ones
Kyle is awesome! Thanks for a great interview.
Right now, I'm looking forward to Season 2 more than pretty much anything else right now.
Very solid questions
I hope Kyle is okay with being in the shadow of Agent Cooper so much. He was great in this show, and lives strongly outside of the legacy of Coop’s character. Hope he knows this,
Kyle is going to be AWESOME in season 2, can’t wait to see where his character goes
wonderful interview, thank you
Fallout was awsome, but Twin peaks everyone forgets the late and great david Bowie was in it lol
"How does it feel being virtually unknown after nearly 40 years in showbiz?" And "what was it like only appearing in a couple of episodes? Have to be really fun questions to answer.
Ohh Dougy.
Kyle was the scary sailor guy from How I met your mother. And he is one true Paul Dune guy.
Kyle is great in Fallout. Obviously, he's great in everything he's in. But this role was perfect, in that when the season ended I wanted more. That's always the sign of a good show and performance.
Kyle is the most adorable treasure!!
great interview steve..
Good interview. I've always liked Kyle. We are from the same medium sized town in Washington State.
I'm a fan since Twin Peaks and Dune. I watch Dune again every other year. After watching Fallout I think that Kyle isn't only the best actor of the series, but also did one of his best performances. Also I love the show for all these ambivalent characters, forcing a large bandwidth of emotions out of the actors. Can't wait for season 2.
* Spoiler *When he climbed out of the cryo chamber in Vault 31 he exclaimed "FATHER! THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED!"
3:42 Kyle MacLachlan has great sense of humor 😂😂🤣🤣.To bad the man from Collider , doesnt have at all
Blue velvet is a masterpiece
I love this man
The sleeper has awakened!!
Kyle was excellent in this btw
Good job Collider
Love this man and wish he was the mayor of Portland for real.
The only question I have for Kyle is what year is it?
Legend
Oh kyle, we feel the respect.
Sincerely,
A giant Fallout nerd
The shows pretty good
What a great interview, the questions really make it so much more interesting.
Somehow I can’t imagine lynch watching Fallout.
Maybe not, but there sure are things he'd like there. The 50s stuff and the music, the absurd and satirical humor, quirky characters and of course Kyle.
A UK set Twin Peaks rebootquel could be interesting initially seeming to not be TP related but slowly more eerie mysterious developments emerge in the small English town. Maybe have Stonehenge be their version of Black Lodge or something?
Justice for Shady Sands!!!
JK, loved Kyle's performance
But seriously though, that was messed up
This how you show respect to your source material and make a great story. No Mary Sues, great character development and growth. Disney needs to pay attention.
well and try to nab Walton Goggins if you have the dexterity to trap lightning in a bottle
Holy shir, Twin Peaks was ABC?
What happened??
Um dude Twin Peaks premiered in 1990, not the late 80's. Come on.
tbf 1990 is really really late 80's... like, just too late. just.
No, the pilot episode was first shown at some film festival in 1989.
It my be hard to believe this but1990 is actually the last year of the 80s
Lol
It's close enough dude, relax.
He wiped out the NCR over kids. Im not a fan.
lol, he stands as a hero to us Kyle’s.. he did what he had to do
we still need to hear the rest of that story but yeah it doesn't look good rn lol
I loved the show. Goggins and Purnell are just astounding. I was so excited to see MacLachlan as the main character's father, and even moreso when I realized that he was going to be a bigger part going through, as I was worried that they'd kill him off fast to give Lucy her motivation. That final episode exemplifies why Mr. MacLachlan is a legend. I cannot wait to see where it goes in season 2.
Mr. MacLahclan, you guys did it right. As a long time fan of the Fallout games, you guys nailed the visuals, nailed the tones, nailed that ridiculous humor that mixes so strangely well with the grim darkness of the setting, you all embodied your characters so well. And I say that as someone without much confidence in studios anymore to produce something respectful that honors a source material they're using. I went in skeptical, and by the end of the first episode you and Walter and Ella had banished that for me. Well done, sir! Well done!
So awesome to have him in the cast!
