    You and I seem to be on the same page! I have been telling my co-workers about this kind of stuff for the last year or two. I look forward to the day when all low voltage (other than speaker level) is carried on shielded CAT6 cable. The fact is the tightly twisted pairs of a CAT6 cable are vastly superior to what is commonly used for mic/line wire in the installation market. Unfortunately the installed AV world is like the “puppy who lost its way”. Thanks for showing the AV world the way of the future. :)

    Awesome video Dave! Thanks for sharing, I would like to give a suggestion for a next video, how to work with stompboxes for vocals, pedal effects and all that, how can you integrate to show working with the sound guy, maybe some advice or personal experiences? I know that not all the sound guys don't like vocal processors, so I am curious on your take on the matter, thanks in advance and cheers from Argentina.

      Cool cool, will ponder that subject. Early on back in the late 80's I built a rack and stand for Perry Farrell (Janes Addiction) so he could control all his vocal effects while singing.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před 2 lety

      Cool cool. Rack mount or boxes?
      The CatRack is a 12 channel splitter in a single rack space. Using two cat tails or supercat tails will get you splits. If you want the split inside the rack, use supercat tails, if you want a split to go somewhere else, use a shielded Cat5e cable and cat tails.
      Or just a couple of cat boxes and 4 sets of cat tails and some shielded Cat5e cable will do it.
      If ya give a shout the Soundtools by phone or email, they/we/me will gladly assist and walk ta through optimizing.

      As I ponder this, I confuse myself. Will your product emulate or behave like the Behring and ART S-8? THat's what we need...a way to split mic's for separate FOH and Livestreaming.

    Dave I can’t seem to figure out how you can terminate each of those drain wires per pair “through” a RJ45 with only 8 pins. Shielded data cable I get, one wrap on all 4 pair but the super sound cable has a drain for each pair. Help a feeble mind understand.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před 3 lety +2

      Great question. The cable itself has individual drain wires. On the RJ45 side, they all get tied together, which is all good as all grounds tie together anyway on the gear we connect to. On the XLR side, having a cable with separate drain wires allows us to run a twisted pair and ground to each XLR. With conventional single drain wire Cat cable, only one XLR would get the drain wire or we would need to solder 3 additional drain wires on or have a junction box of some sort, to terminate the 4 XLR tails to an RJ45.

    • @Auxknob1
      @Auxknob1 Před 3 lety +2

      @@DaveRat Yep, feeble minds now understand. Ground is ground the world around. With that much wire terminating to a 23/24awg RJ connector that’s part of the reason for all the cable reinforcement. Well thought out.

    Dave, on a FB forum a user mentioned he was able to take a 500ft fiber switch to switch and utilize your sound tools CAT snake. Have you tried this? I feel like I’ve seen a snake where you took it over 300ft.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před 3 lety

      We use bundles of 4 x 100m (330 ft) SoundTools supercat and super cat sound cables for multiple applications as part of our system drive snakes on our arena and festival rigs.
      I have not tried not am I sure I understand the 500 ft sw to sw fiber usage though.

  • @fkmobile1

    With audio over CAT5 or any other product are you aware of a way to add an on/off switch that would allow the 4 mics to be "muted"?

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před 2 lety

      Hmm, it would be the same as with audio over mic cables

    @jimmie999999999 Před 7 měsíci

    brilliant!

  • @isettech
    @isettech Před 3 lety +1

    Now if only someone would make a 6 or 8 CAT5 portable patch cable. The only bundled CAT cable I can find is solid for telcom trunk lines, with solid conductors. The whole idea of a snake is to make a single run, not retrograde to 5 or 6 individual cables from the stage.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat  Před 3 lety

      There are several companies making multi Cat5e and higher bundled cables. Sommer is one.
      The issue with bundled cat cables is that, unlike audio snake where a bunch of twisted pairs are bundled in a single jacket, cat bundles are bundles of jacketed groups of 4 pairs.
      The jacketing of of the individual groups of 4 pairs is done to maintain the ability to terminate each cat5e in conventional ways to an RJ45 or ethercon.
      But when you re jacket already jacketed cat5e, it significantly increases the cable diameter and cost while reducing flexibility and can reduce durability.
      Rather than using jacketed cat5/6/7 with an additional overall jacket, where a failure of one cable makes the whole bundle unusable, is heavy, big and expensine, just bundling cat5e or a mix of cat5,/6/7 or whatever, provides a lower cost, more versitile solution that allows replacement or upgrading of individual CAT5/6/7 lines.

      On mixing consoles and nearly all audio gear, all the pin1 connections are tied together.
      Tying oun1 together at the stage box makes no difference to tying pin1s together at the console or wherever.
      As long as shielded Cat5e or better is used, all good
