    There is nothing more frustrating then being the aggressor and in control of the point and then a unforced error. Applegren was definitely showing his maturity and experience in this match by just keeping the ball in play & wait for Waldner to self destruct. I'm glad Waldner went on to become probably the greatest player and have a very solid mentality.

    I understand the frustration Waldner...I once had an older player went psycho on me during a match, he was YELLING at me, I thought but later found out that he was yelling at the ball "common ball, we can do it, but I need your help" Table tennis players can be crazy sometimes.

    i remember watching in an interview with waldner that his father had disciplined him after this match a lot. after this, he never acted badly by throwing his racket around as seen here.

      Unusual to see Waldner (Mr. Cool) get this flustered, but he was always a perfectionist, and here he was only 17. He had a long career in front of him. (he sure was slim back then)

    I've been watching Waldner for a lot of years so far, and I would have never guessed that the always-well-behaved Waldner was once this badly behaved can't-handle-losing young man. I'm glad people change.

      @jonneville2287 Před 3 lety +1

      I think by then JO had already made up his mind that he wanted a world title, to be world champion, etc., so he was setting very high goals for himself, and therefore a lot of pressure to win every match. Plus he was very young.

    Wonderful to watch both of them, but sorry. I like the play style of applet...but to me it is not to understand why the referee said nothing about the backhand service of appelgren...I mean he did not throw the ball! It is direct from the hand....maybe legal at this stage, I don't know...nowadays it would be incorrect anyway.
