Educators Say Oklahoma Teacher Salary Increase Bill Is Too Little Too Late (HBO)

  • This past Monday night, the Oklahoma House of Representative passed House Bill 1010 and raised taxes for the first time in 28 years.
Much of the revenue will go to fund Oklahoma’s schools and raise teacher salaries by an average of $6,000 a year. On Wednesday night, with the threat of a mass teacher walkout looming over their heads, Oklahoma’s senate ratified the bill and put it on the desk of Governor Mary Fallin who, in a joyous press conference, said there would be a “signing party” on Thursday.
The bill was supposed to avert the teacher walkout that has been in the works since this past September when teachers in Bartlesville, Oklahoma began seriously thinking about drastic action to increase funding to an education system that has seen drastic cuts in per-pupil funding and a ten year freeze on teacher salaries.
That movement kicked into full gear after the West Virginia teacher strike in late February and early March - tens of thousands of teachers in Oklahoma began planning for a work stoppage.
After Fallin declared victory in the Capitol, leaders from Oklahoma’s teachers unions began releasing statements saying the bill, which met teacher demands about halfway, had not gone far enough.
VICE News was with a group of educators in Bartlesville as they heard the news from the Capitol.

But thats what I expect coming from someone who is upset that teachers are asking for more.. research how much OK teachers get paid... they are wanting what they were promised that is all... oh wait you didn't know that they were also promised a raise in the 1990's and also did not receive a single penny. Gubmint employees get something called "step increases." Essentially a small bump to keep pace with the cost of living. Also known as a "COLA." Whenever a politician looks you in the eye and says they'll do more for "working people", they're talking to "gubmint employees" since they themselves are "gubmint employees." And on the state level , who makes up the largest group of "gubmint employees?" Cops 'n teachers. Please understand that these "hard workin' public servants" aren't exactly working for you...you're working for them. Cops, teachers, and politicians. They're all on the same team.

So you want to raise the wages of people that had no pay cut, because they had no pay raise. While quite a number of us not only haven't had a pay raise but have either lost their job, or took pay cuts, while taxes and expenses have increased.
Only seems fair to those that either don't pay taxes, or are the recipients of the raises (the teachers).
I lost 80% of my income due to Obama's policies, yet now teachers are complaining about not getting a raise.

Ghastly Grinner give the best doctor you know a patient with poor health. Then ask that doctor to repair all the major organs in this patient’s body without a staff, an equipped operating room, a dull scalpel, and no anesthesia. That doctor is going to have a huge struggle just to keep the patient alive through surgery. Now apply this metaphor to a teacher who has a student enrolling in his overcrowded classroom in the middle of the year. Poverty causes high mobility. Oklahoma kids are in the top five in every poverty category. Imagine that child is hungry. Oklahoma kids are #4 in hunger. Imagine that child is homeless. Oklahoma kids are #4 again. Imagine that child is traumatized, abused, neglected, parent is incarcerated or the child is in foster care. Yes you have guessed it! In all those categories, Oklahoma children are in the top five. Now take that child with your poor teaching resources and try to get him to perform well on a standardized test over curriculum he missed before he transferred to your classroom. It’s a set up don’t you see? The legislators have destroyed schools with their chronic underfunding and say, “public education doesn’t work!” It’s like holding someone’s head under water for 15 minutes, and then saying, “Oh look, their dead!”

You can definitely cover the entire average curriculum in fewer days. Probably three, or even two, depending on the complexity of the subject. That is not the problem. The problem is that not every student learns at the same pace. Many students will not be able to keep up with that pace and there is no time available for individual help for those students. So the case is fail or fall behind. Worst case scenario, the pass grade is lowered until they do pass. There is also NO extension work for the brighter students. Just get the course covered, is the program.
And all this with underpaid and unqualified teachers. A recipe for disaster, even with committed teachers who get "burned out", trying their best to help students along. But that is what the Legislators in these States want, and that is the goal of the voters. Only voters with kids care, and they are in the minority. A recipe for a downward spiral. Not a new thing, though. This degrading of public education has a long history.

When I was a young man full of hope, and optimism I viewed every American From Maine to California, Texas, to Topeka, Boston to Beverly Hills, American Samoa, Puerto Rico,
et al, as my family, brothers, sisters, cousins. I swore an oath to defend them all. Today however; since the "(fanatical right wing)" barged in to town, the "(Republican criminal cartel)", that kinship is shattered. That American dream has become a nightmare of wanton ignorance, hostility, deceit, insult, and conflict.
Want to know who's kids are putting graffiti on the walls, stealing your car, knocking up your daughter? Who's selling opioids on the corner , filling up jails, costing $billions per year for prosecutions, incarceration, violence, and tragedy ?????? Look no further than the Republican bomb throwing machine of "anti children" anti government, "anti middle class", "anti science", "anti common sense", anti teacher, anti union, anti citizen, corporate whoring Republican wrecking ball. Look no further than the millions of Children they abandoned, and stabbed in the back, who's teachers can barely pay the rent.
"(Betsy De Vos)? " "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" I am eternally grateful to all the courageous generous teachers of my youth who at least then made a barely reasonable wage compared to the paltry wages of today. They allowed me to survive. Teachers are as important as any missile, or strategic bomber. They are the underpinning of our society, critical infrastructure. That costs real money. Their pay is among the lowest of all industrialized countries. That BS is going to come to a crashing halt very soon, no later than next November.

It's about enabling teachers to keep their heads above water. Teachers only get so much funding to purchase classroom supplies before they have to start buying supplies out of pocket and that cuts into their pay. Money spent on supplies that a bunch of little gremlins may or may not trash within a week is not money being spent on necessities of life like food, gas and paid bills.
Not to mention that even after the bell rings and school's let out there's still grading and lesson plans to be done (which can take hours to do) and parents to communicate with (again, this can take hours if a teacher has a large class). Teachers don't get paid for that work.
A teacher who doesn't have to worry that they might not be able to make ends meet can spend more time and energy on giving kids a good education because they don't have as many other priorities and concerns eating at their mind and sapping their energy.

given that regulations have massively favored the rich minority that buys its influence over politicians and government; i hope these teachers show no mercy and make an example to show America what ought to be our right priorities. training the next generation of thinkers or having to take care of other parent's little problems, while they go off to personally enrich themselves, should not be seen as a sacrifice, but as the truly valuable contribution to society that it is. becoming a great quality teacher must be rewarded and incentivized far more than becoming a corrupt wall street type that favors short sighted corporate gains, which from historical experience sometimes turn out economically disastrous outcomes--although this shift in favoritism will likely never happen. by extension, incentivizing apt individuals entering teaching in the math and sciences, considering the future direction of the economy, ought to be an even higher priority. education is the great equalizer, and promoting the growing gap in education is to promote and further the already pervasive divisiveness, anger and frustration already plaguing the country. promote inequality in education at the risk of dire consequences devoid of any ethical or moral values

I achieved that by studying hard, getting a technical degree in college, producing quality work product, and branding myself. While 70% of the students at my university majored in Liberal Arts, I took the less traveled path leading to a smaller supply of professionals in my chosen technical career field. Bottom line, you get paid more when there is less supply of people who can do what you do in the labor force. If you get a liberal arts degree and expect a career as a teacher, then expect to be easily replaced by an abundance of other job seekers with the same educational background. And if you think your union will protect your job as a government employee, then you should read up on what Ronald Reagan did to air traffic controllers who went on strike in 1981. Those that did not return to their jobs were all fired and then quickly replaced by scabs, including by air traffic controllers from the U.S. military. The Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization union was then quickly within weeks after the strike began. Don't rely on your union. Rely on YOURSELF.

The modern welfare state destroyed the black family, which was doing fairly well before the entitlement industrial complex told black women that they no longer needed a man to support them, except for a "quickie" on the weekend to produce more children, many of whom would become future welfare recipients themselves. As a result, average IQ's in America have peaked and are now falling, as the wealthy elites aren't having as many kids as they used to because children tend to have an adverse effect on their "lifestyles." Now imagine my school, which is kinda like a fight school, with 2-3 fights a week, and extremely troublesome students. Which last week, a teacher got punched in the face when trying to break up a fight. I’m not even in Tulsa or the Capital. It sucks though, most teachers work 2-3 more jobs to make ends meet. Not to mention the grading they do at home, lesson planning, buying stuff for the classroom, (Sometimes out of their own paycheck,) and making worksheets for the students. Teaching is a hard job to do, and takes a lot of time and patience. While yes they get three months off, I think it’s still fair they get more funding and a better paycheck, after all, they are teaching the future.

One of the reason some public schools are doing worse is because funds are siphon away to these for profit and minimum education level schools. The type of school that wants the smartest students and deny the harder learning ones not because they want to give a good education, but because its easier to teach the basics to smart students. In turn, that is actually screwing the smart students over because in a well funded public school with leeway to have classes for advanced learning would be able to teach them more...
But you enjoy your manipulated reality while setting your future kids on the path of squalor, pleb.

Did you watch the video? The reason the state is broke is because the republicans refuse to tax big oil. They implemented regressive taxation and drained 25% of educational funding.

Vouchers would be a solution but the government and teachers do not like competition. Competition is dangerous for low quality teachers and schools. Its much easy to just make tax payers keep paying you for bad results with no accountability.
