Thanks, Shamus, for this vid. I've wanted to do this for some time to my old Seagull Parlor which is just not a good player anymore due to many issues. Love all your very original creations!
Got me an old Eko 12, Top bellied n bridge pulled, you inspired me enough to do as you have, the Eko has a 4 bolt on neck, so I guess a I can fine adjust with shims, Thanks for the info', enjoyed this ; )
good video i have an old six string acoustic and same thing the bridge snapped right off so this video gives me a good idea on what i should do with it thanks
This is awesome - dude turns a thrashed acoustic 12 string into a resonator. Also, he recommends a bunt pan as a DIY resonator cone. Imma hafta try that out!
Nice job. I have a couple of question if you don't mind. Why not use a resonator bowl? Is there a way to adjust intonation? Is your biscuit bridge pre grooved for the strings or is this something that needs to be done? This would be a great way to fix a bad neck set without touching the neck itself! Thanks for your time. Norm
Thanks for sharing. Hoping to see this when is done. I noticed it looks like was an electric 12 string. Are you going to make it electric 12 string resonator? I was wanting to do this with some POS 6 string accoustic, but now going to be looking for a 12 string. I'd never thought about it. Thanks again.
Hi Shamus. Just wondering, Wouldn't you want to support the bundt pan in the center with a stand off or something for the best resonance. Come in under the cone with something to hold the pan up and support the bridge. Then the sides of the pan could ring just like when you held the center and tapped the side of the pan in the video. What do you think?
@SHAMUS442009 can u give advice on how u would turn a Fender Electro Acoustic into a resonator. Baring in mind all the amp functions and the inbuilt tuner are connected up aswell.
Hey Shamus, hope you are doing well found your channel while researching resonator guitars and see you haven’t posted in quite a few years. I was wondering if you were still building custom guitars like this and would be interested in making one to sell?
I have a guitar I'm planning to do this with. I'm curious about the support you added to the back of the guitar. I haven't seen that done in others I've looked at. Is it attached to where the heel of the neck is attached, or just to the back of the guitar? I assume it's just glued in?
I suppose the neck angle and general body shape of my guitar could be unique and vary from yours...so maybe the depth you used for the two lips in the ring would be different from what I need. The only way I know how to judge this is to route out the ring a little at a time and then place the cone/spider/saddle in the ring...then hold a long straight edge from the nut to the saddle to simulate strings under tension...and route down until the straight edge sits at a height very slightly ABOVE where you want it. The strings should depress the cone ever so sightly I presume.
I have an old Robelli resonator I got off E bay. I keep having to mess with the action. It doesn't have any wood from the neck to the back like other ones do. I'm considering tearing it back down and putting in a 3/4 inch dowell. Any thoughts?
I know I am commenting a lot here but one more question...did you feel that there were any string-to-saddle tension/sound issues due to NOT modifying the standard tailpiece. Jeff McDermott mentioned this in his comment here and mentioned that he would modify the tailpiece.
Shamus442209...Thanks a lot for sharing your project with the rest of us. I am in the middle of converting a 6-string to a resonator. I don't plan on adjusting the neck angle. This means that in order to get action (string height) suitable for normal fret playing I will need to lower the entire cover/bridge/cone setup. In your video here you mentioned you used 1/2 inch plywood to make your ring. What I would REALLY like to know is what depths of wood you removed in the ring to make the lip for the cover plate and also for the lip for the cone? How far down from the top of the plywood did you need 'router' out to set the lip for the cone? 1/2 inch? 3/4 inch?
I just saw you video. Nice job. I've done a few of these over the years. Check out my method sometime. I just posted a video of it. I developed a device that gives the strings a little more tension behind the saddle. When you can't remove a neck to adjust for hight you loose that tension and related tone.
Got me a smashed Fernandes acoustic git and an angel food cake tin. Gonna attempt an acoustic/electric six-string guitar/sitar with a buzzing (Gotoh or a home-ground cow bone device) bridge set atop the cake pan tube . Might add an aluminum desk lamp hood for a dome-shaped back. (SEE my electric toilet seat guitar at "CrapMaster demo ONE" here on CZcams at Gary SMITTY Smith. It sports a home-ground cow bone nut and a modified door hinge bridge...iffy intonation but it works...LEDs by Radio Shack)
Gary SMITTY Smith i made myself an electric guitar with the base of a china-made fake fender strat,a metacrilate board and some iron Meccano pieces and bars.no to be braggin’,but my guitar teacher,by the way an international jazz concertist, said to me “boy, you sure you did it yourself?.??”
Huh. Rat rod guit-fiddles. Didn't realize that was a thing.
Now I *REALLY* gotta get my shop in order.
Thanks, Shamus, for this vid. I've wanted to do this for some time to my old Seagull Parlor which is just not a good player anymore due to many issues. Love all your very original creations!
Love it, People like you are special and an inspiration. Best wishes Paul H.
these are beautiful instruments!! awesome!!

this is informative and fun to watch. You seem like a cool guy.

I absolutely want to see and HEAR the finished product. Good luck with the contunuing learning curves.

Thanks for the knowledge, enjoyed that
I love takamine guitars I own one and my heart sank when you said that it was a tak lol but still cool didn’t realize that this was possible
Got a damaged 6-string in my garage, just waiting to be converted. Thanks for the tips. And I'm sitting here wearing the same Jake LIG T-shirt
That's freakin amazing how resourceful. Besides music what background skills you have?
great.ideas
Very cool, thanks.
Can't wait to try this.
hey i am in argentine congratulation for your work and playing guitar like robert jhonson ,good sound ,and finish
SUPER VIDEO....thanks for posting
Nice, well done that man.
friggin genius. i want in the roasting pan resonator business.
Very nice work
you sir...are a legend..
thanks. Very cool.

@SHAMUS442009 I was expecting to see twelve strings on it, but still... SOUNDS GREAT!
nice craftmanship

If you were building a dobro with a really tall nut, would you still have to lower it?
COOL TOYS!

You referenced purshasing something from Home Depot. What piece was that?
Nice one dude
hell yes!

@frost0813 CHK OUT NEW UP DATE VID #2 GUITAR WORKED OUT GREAT - ENJOY -SHAMUS

Very nice and informative...making 'something beautiful and productive' our of someone else's junk.
The ceiling fan one for sale?
...7:45 in the video is one of the better side views of the two lips...one for the inset cover plate and the other for the cone.

I'm wondering the same thing about router depth right now too. I bought my kit from stew mac.
excellent work.....can it work left handed...lol...
I know it was less than 1/2 inch that you routed out if the board was 1/2" to start.
We, where are they?
