Jim hails Sayles! I love 'Passion Fish' and 'Limbo' too.

Thanks Jim. Spread the word and get everyone to buy two copies, even if they don't like it. Hopefully passion fish and limbo are next.

Hi Ronin, I have been a fan of John Sayles since "The Return of the Secaucus Seven", I did not know he was one of the first filmmakers to receive a MacArthur Genius grant (second only to documentarian Frederick Wiseman). He is never boring, even when his films miss (which is not often). I am looking forward to more episodes of super sayles.

Thanks Ben. I didn't know that either. For me, Sayles is in a class by himself. As everyone knows haha. Here's to him getting his dues.

Absolutely floydian. With every comment on how people enjoy some Sayles I shed a tear of joy. If enough people buy lone star and matewan, the criterion overlords may bless us with more. I’m only asking for his entire filmography. Not that much really haha.

Firstly, let me say that having watched this film for the first time this week, I agree with almost every single word you say about Lone Star. I was stunned by how good it was, and was hoping that someone would review this new release, so was so pleased to see it was you! I’m going to be telling anyone who will listen about this for months.
I’ve been hunting around for more Sayles films and there isn’t much, and what there is is on dvd and old. I shall be anticipating your other Sayles reviews to know where to go next. If you can mention which releases you’ve got, to help we noobs find them too, that would be excellent!
I was able to follow everything you mentioned perfectly (except I’m sure that Deeds Snr followed Wade as Sherriff, not the other way around), but I was thinking maybe some may imagine this film was very complex. Let me say that if you watch it, it plays out quite easily with no confusion. I’m amazed that I’ve not picked up on Sayles until pretty recently. He seems like a true auteur, to me. I can’t wait until I can watch another of his films. If they are half as good as Matewan and Lone Star, I’ll be happy! Many thanks, SR.

Thanks Richard. Yes, you’re right. Deeds followed Wade as sheriff. My brain doesn’t work when I do videos haha. I’m so glad you liked it. It’s a masterful example of sayles at his best. World building, embracing the local culture by using them as extras and asking the community about history and creating characters that you want to spend more time with. He gets more out of less than most filmmakers. Hopefully this is the start of his work getting the recognition it deserves.

A great, fluid, and effortless review, S.R., which was a pleasure to watch. Your enthusiasm for John Sayles just poured out and I'm not sure if you hold any one in similar regard outside Japan.
Im almost ashamed to say Ive only seen films he has written, rather than directed. But not quite.
Im looking forward to your Return of the Secacaus Seven review, which is probably where I would start

Thanks Drew. I just love an underdog. Also the fact that Sayles is arguably the best screenwriter of the last 40 odd years. Expect more Saylesian propaganda haha.

I think Hollywood turns to Sayles more often than you'd think. I understand he pays for making his films with script doctor work for the big studios.

thanks atthebridge. He has script doctored Apollo 13 for example but that isn't the same as giving him money to make a film.
