For all the guitarist who want the ukulele experience without purchasing a ukulele just put a capo on the 5th fret of your guitar and do not play the E or A string, bam, you have a ukulele
CaptainAmerykah1911, I have been using my second guitar with a capo on the 5th free for a couple of years. It has worked out great for me, and I still have a guitar for playing guitar. ☺
My little Gretsch also came with built in Fishman under saddle pick up and equalizer/tuner. Size is the point. I keep it next to my desk, fits easily into my elbow without banging into the arms of my chair.
One thing that's important for guitarists to know coming to ukulele is that while the less strings means a lot of chords are simpler, it also means that playing melodies takes a lot more movement up and down the neck as opposed to across it. Because of the high g string, you are working with 3 strings for melody instead of the 6 you have on guitar.
I have been a guitarist for many years but just got a uke a couple of months ago. Loving it! Much easier to play finger-picked melodies with chords but it takes a while to get the fact that D and A shapes on uke are actually G and D into your brain!
I switched from guitar and bass to focusing more and more on ukulele about 5 years ago and I love it. I really enjoy the challenge of doing something interesting on an instrument with a much more limited range and after a few decades of wrestling with heavy solidbodies, I have to admit it's nice to play something small and light. If you're used to linear tuning, reentrant can be a little hard to get your head around so for guitarists looking to try uke, I think it might be best to either start on one that has a low G string or on a baritone uke, which is tuned the same as the four highest strings on a guitar and if you want to hear what the instrument is really capable of, I'd recommend listening to Jake Shimabukuro, Taimane and Kalei Gamiao.
I am thrilled that you are going to do more ukulele videos. I recently finished your beginner guitar lessons and started looking at your "how to play this song" videos, and I'd love to learn some ukulele from you. You're a great teacher, thanks for making the guitar make sense to me.
I bought a Dean ukulele. I call it the mobile shredder. It’s a Dean electric guitar shaped ukulele. It is electric. I just bring it around along with a small amp and just shred around. It’s much more better than lugging an electric around or a acoustic. I’m glad dean guitars made a electric ukulele

A couple helpful tips I picked up are to get yourself a felt pick for a warmer tone and also lodge the uke right into your elbow and pick where your hand ends up, usually being up on the fretboard somewhere. Makes for a much warmer tone
Me: I wouldn't mind a Ukelele..... CZcams: Hey you have a notification from Marty Music Me: oh wow! My wallet: Aww s#@t here we go again! Thanks for the permission Marty to get a new instrument ;) :p
For the best sound on ukulele, strum the strings over the place where the body meets the neck, not over the sound hole like you do for the guitar. Great video.
Rajat Ahuja yeah lol that’s the most invalid selling point of a Ukulele I’ve ever seen. I personally would much rather bass, also prepares you for guitar with the size unlike a Ukulele
I snagged my first uke a few months back and it's so much fun.. you should start peppering in your song tutorials on the uke because your teaching style is head and shoulders above mostly everyone on CZcams
i always remember the ukes tuning as (from 1st string to 4th) All Evil Cats Growl - AECG. i bought a really top notch hand built uke for my niece but find myself jamming on it from time to time.
Decades ago I wanted to play guitar. My parents got me a uke instead. 5 years later, all desire to play guitar (or any instrument for that matter) was driven from me. Its taken 30 years for me to finally get back to that desire and start learning guitar. To each their own, but I'll be content to never hold a uke again! :D
If you want a Ukelele but can't afford one you can actually tune your guitar high enough (I think, it works for me) so that its justice one the tuning is A D G C E A and you'll notice the last 4 strings are just like a Ukelele and the last two are also from the standard guitar tuning, the best part about this tuning is its just like a guitar so you can play all those chords you already knew! I just discovered this myself like a few hours ago and I've never seen anyone ever mention it before which is wierd, probably cause their strings break? Like I said my guitar is doing fine but id say he careful as I think I almost broke my strings trying to yune it lol
I have an Amahi C-31. It's fun to play, has a distinctive look. Helped me break out of the rut I had fallen into, unlocked new songwriting possibilities :)
The way Marty says Ookalele, makes my life better... thanks Marty...your videos are getting better and better...5:16...Marty being a Brian May for a second..
Hey cool! I actually graduated from uke to a six string back in high school. I recall tuning to be same as the top four strings on a guitar but maybe I learned something!? I remember on the chord chart for my new guitar I was amazed that in most cases all I had to do was add the bass notes in my guitar shapes vs uke shapes. One hit recording I remember that featured a uke was BJ Thomas hit Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. Was a Burt Bacharach song featured in the movie Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid, backed by The Wrecking Crew on uke I believe.
This becomes more popular since Grace Vanderwaall auditioned on AGT 2016 I would love if you can make a review about the Grace Vanderwaalls songs and the way she plays this beautiful instrument
I wish other instruments get the same exposure as guitar does, thers a bunch of apps that have guitar tabs, chords, lessons and so much but theres hardly any for ukes or cuatros or any instrument for that matter. Well i just used you video for a little banter, anyways keep it up marty i have been a sub since a really long time, you helped me so much through my learning, thank you for inspiring me and making me do better you are awesome!
5:13 to the non-musical people... or people who don’t play string instruments with solid bodies... the best smell in the world is the inside of a solid body guitar or ukulele! BEST!!!
I have been playing the uke for about 6 years now. I considered learning guitar after succeeding with the uke, but I found it to be redundant. fun video!
I picked up ukulele cuz I thought it was easier than guitar (it kinda is tbh), and I can play some jazz stuff, but on guitar, nope. So now I’m trying to get better at guitar so I can balance it out 😅
A baritone uke plays exactly like a guitar without the two bass strings - same chord shapes, same keys. So everything you learn on a baritone translates directly to guitar skills. But it's way easier on the fingers and easier to form chords.
Marty let's hang out and jam brotha I've learned to play guitar watching your videos. Of course some songs too like nothing else matters, road trippin by red hot and a few others. But I live in California and honestly it would be a dream to jam together man.
Marty, I’ve been wanting a Ukulele for Christmas but my parents say I don’t need one since I have a guitar . Hopefully this video will convince them !!
Hi! Can you recommend a uke around $150-200 that doesn’t have a blunt edge? I am a beginner with a concert sized uke, and the uke I have is literally digging into my right forearm while strumming causing painful marks/bruises. I’ve experimented with various positioning, but I’ve concluded that it’s not the positioning that’s my problem, but the instrument’s design and the blunt edge where the side meets the top - no matter how I position, my forearm hits a corner one way or another. I am thinking that something with a more rounded edge would resolve the issue. Can you recommend some options? I’d really like a concert size, preferably an acoustic-electric. Thanks in advance!
Lucky...im literally staring out the window waiting for ups to deliver mine! It's due today/out for delivery. I got a victory pineapple soprano. Cant wait!!!
PSA: Use picks on your ukulele as little as possible! They shorten the life of your strings since they are nylon and not steel. there are special felt material picks you can purchase for not a lot of money. and in my opinion you get a better tone just using your fingers
Hi Ethan I've used picks /plectrums of various shapes and sizes on my nylon string guitars for decades without issue as many guitarists do. Surely it would be no different on a uke. 😕
Who's editing your videos? Because they deserve a raise
Amadeus X yes
Yep,
The coolest video.
First real this is the most memetastic thing I've seen in one of his videos.
You’re probably the one editing the videos and think you’re slick commenting as if you don’t know to try and get a raise ….

Marty I don't know if it's you editing these videos but this is dry humour at its finest and some quality editing. Keep it up
The nickname of this instrument should be “Little guitar”.
Guitar for the legendary Danny Devito
little bass*
Little bass more like
Cheeki Breeker I don’t care if it’s a little bass just because it has 4 strings. It should be nicknamed “Little guitar”, seriously. -_-
@@heroofwinds1251 tropical bass
Great inspiration for my grandson. He has been learning and growing his skills from your channel.!
I picked up a mandolin, instead of a ukulele. It’s fun!
Mandolin guide next please. They are very portable & cool.
Yeah a mandolin is much better than a ukulele
"it's easier to play because it has less strings than guitar". BASS GUITAR players crying in the corner.

The fact that you called it a Bass Guitar just pissed alot of Davie 504 fan
LoL
Can one slap it?
No idea how you can play it so easily u r amazing
Marty can you do tutorial guitar for: Love of my life by Queen 🙏😀
The ukelele is such an underrated instrument! Appreciate the advice as a ukelele owner!
This video had me smiling from beginning to end, thanks for that Marty, I needed it for sure. Lifted my spirits right when I needed it.
So I CAN play one through my Marshall! How would it sound with a wah pedal???

Okay Marty, now you HAVE to do Somewhere Over the Rainbow
First, must put on 200 lbs.
Wow, Marty on the ukelele sounds like me on the guitar. There is hope for me!
Riptide on Ukulele is the Wonderwall on Guitar

Marty do an acoustic guitar tutorial of Love of My Life by Queen. Do it on 6 string. Teach from Rock in Montreal live
Yes please^
I started on ukulele and it made the transition to guitar very easy! Marty man I love you even more for this video!

I have a question! Do you necessarily need to sing to play a ukulele?
You Can play Come as you are by Nirvana on the E and A strings just like on guitar
That michael Rosen reference (plus the brilliant video) was the final thing to push me over the edge and make me subscribe

I swapped out the G string for an octave lower, which is available in most guitar stores. Makes it closer to an actual high pitched guitar.

I've always been interested in ukulele or banjo chords, so your future videos on ukes should be really good. 😁
Try the baritone, tunes similar to a guitar and much easier to play if you are a guitar play. Rock-on my brother.
I love you bro, your very good teacher.

Awww no heart
Just bought my first ukelele. You’re the man, Marty!
I wonder what will happen If you throw some distortion on that ukulele
Is it easy to take a uke like this and restring it to be a left handed? Or do you need to buy a left specific one?
Ukulele is a Happy Instrument. And a Uke Bass is fun as heck.
Marty will soon be taking on Jake Shimabukuro at the uke battle of the bands!!
