A bench hook is a simple tool and an almost essential extra to the workbench. they can be as complicated or as simple as the woodworker wants. these bench hooks are made from a single piece of walnut. this style is a great way to learn the basic hand tool skills of using a chisel and aswing long lines.

Glad that you mentioned Roy's video with LN. I always chuckle at his quirkiness in that one
yup. love Roy's stuff. so much fun!
Although I'm a hobby woodworker, I have never heard of this simple, but useful tool before. Thanks for the education.
thanks my pleasure!
Using two of them to support longer items - what a great idea! Thanks!
Wish I could take credit.
Man those are beautiful. Love the look of woodgrain and there's just something warm and inviting about walnut.
Thanks! I could not agree more!
It’s the basics that make the professional. James, again, always a pleasure and thank you.
thanks man! I could not agree more. the small things count
Great idea. Didn't have a clue as to what they were for in the beginning though...Enjoy your Sunday...rr
Thanks Richard.
Those are so beautiful to use them for bench hooks , with a small detail it would be perfect modern feet for a small drawer !!!
That is a cool idea. I thought of adding carving.
This is next on my list. Excellent job sir.
Thanks. Looking forward to seeing yours!
James what a great idea I never thought in that direction great job m8.
thanks Paulo!
Just found a good wood distributor close to me. Now I can get exotic cutoffs to make the small projects you post
Lol I would never have thought of Walnut as exotic. Around here it is a dime a dozen. I got this piece for free from the scrap pile at the cabinet shop.
I like the part in Roy's video where he reveals the secret to woodworking.
Lol yes.
Sorry. I couldn’t make that out.
What did you say?
They look like some handy little tools. I'd never actually heard of them before (I'm quite new to all the terminology and fancy tools) I'll have to make a couple for myself :) Thanks for sharing mate
Sweet! looking forward to seeing yours!
Nice video. I guess I have to watch two videos now with this format
Thanks.
Been meaning to make myself some of these!
A lot of fun to make.
Thanks for showing how & sharing that
Well done James, I love the dynamic shots you've been getting since hiring the camera person.
thanks Brian! that means a lot!
Excelente, excelente teacher!
Thanks!
Your "Sylvester" moment at 8:02 had me quacking up! LOL hehehe
LOL I did not even catch that! thanks!
How funny! You watch very closely! I had to work to find it! 😂🤣
James, Thanks for tomorrows project, since there is no Bears game to watch :( Hope you're not getting walloped by this snowstorm. Thanks for all you do!!!
Nice. Looking forward to seeing it. We are not getting much snow. It is half rain.
They came out great and that's a very useful way of making a bench hook!
thanks man!
thank you . when you use your fingers / hands to put finish on , in the back of your mind do you hear your mom saying be sure to wash up before you come in . i do lol Mom all ways in the back of our minds
LOL something like that. sure makes the food taste odd!
Nope! I wasn't a Mama that made my boys wash up before every meal. Now...don't bring the dirt into the house...but fingers...nope! Enjoy those germs! 🤣😂
Definitely the prettiest bench hooks I’ve seen so far. Please can I ask a very basic about chiselling? Do you follow the same bevel up, bevel down practices as you do with planes? When the wood's grain is more difficult to work with you turn the chisel over to make it bevel up? I’ve notice you do both and I wondered if you just change over just for a change or if you had a reason.
I talk about that a bit on the second channel. I use it bevel up as the rest of the chisel can reference the work that has been done but it can only reach so far. Then it is bevel down. For most work I use it bevel down as that gives you more control
Wood By Wright Thanks James, I'm off to look at your other channel now.
Great craftmanship , but can't justify the waist of material. Let me know what you think.
Thanks. I do not see it as a waste at all. This piece of scrap was going to be burnt, and I saved it from the scrap pile. on top of that, it is a very old and traditional method of making hooks. but that being said waste depends on the person. around here this stuff grows on trees. LOL
Nice work James! 👍🏻👊🏻
thanks Fred!
Hey James, great video. I am new to hand planes and was wondering if in future videos you could say which planes you are using. I think in this video you used 4 different planes and the only one that I knew was the low angle plane. I only ask because I want to learn which plane to use when at what stage. I have bought a few at flea markets and cleaned them up but I still have much to learn, Thanks!
Thanks. I cover. A lot more info like that on the second channel. That channel is more about info and this channel is more about the general watchers. I also have a couple videos on plane types and what they are for if you want to see that.
Walnut seems a bit extravagant.
Lol. Around here it is a dime a dozen. This is a throw away scrap I got for free from a cabinet scrap.
But will the bench hooks work with that Ryoba saw of yours? Seems they are meant to work more with the Western-style push saws. Is there an equivalent for pull saws? Excellent video, James. Thank you.
Corect. I talk about that a bit on the second channel. it is rare that I use eastern saws. There is a similar design but it has to be clamped in a vice or stretch across the bench to the far side.
Whenever I see a piece of wood that thick say "you could make a guitar out if that"
LOL yup. that is on my list, but not walnut.
Walnut guitar back and sides and neck. Lovely. Spruce front. I would have thought with your skills it would suit you.
Electric. Thus the comment on thickness. I've used alder, maple, and believe it or not, Western red cedar. Walnut is not that unusual for an electric.
oh hello james. Thanks again for sharing. And your video is a little bit different as of lately? New style videography?
Thanks. Yes. The general CZcams population likes the videos with less talking. So I post those here. The older how to style are now on the second channel.
oooff...2nd channel? I missed that info. Thanks James. Hope the videos kept coming out. Whatever style your a good teacher. Easily understood. Have a nice day and good 2019.
Great video, as usual. Will the ends/hooks hold up since the entire thing runs in the direction of the grain? I know they aren’t for hard chopping so maybe I’m overthinking it.
Love the channel!
thanks. they would be stronger if I made them thicker but they are more then strong enough for the work that will be on them.
@@WoodByWright I wonder if adding a dowel would help prevent them from breaking off along the grain? Just drill a hole or 2 down through the thickest part and glue in a dowel to add that cross grain support.
you sure could, but I have found no need with my other set. but that is the engineer in me saying it is strong enough! LOL
Wood By Wright Roy Underhill’s were the same way, so I probably am overthinking it - I’ll make up a set of these bench hooks as soon as I can!
Good job!
Thanks!
What was the thickness of the Walnut board
This was 7/4 but a lot of people do it with 5/4 or 6/4.
I hope this doesn't affect your golf game 😂
Why did you choose to go with a tall, narrow fence, instead of a short, wide one?
I like the tall fence personally. Just my style.
"HOOK" LINE and SINKER!
Looking forward to the Peach Meet.
oh that was a good one! looking forward to seeing you there!
Glowforge ad on your video 🤣
LOL really ? nice!
@@WoodByWright I had quite the chuckle over that. Next build: hand-powered laser cutter!
Me: That's a lot of sawing. I'm not good with...
You: I'll use a chisel...
Me: Shut up! Just, shut up! You had me at chisel. You. Had. Me. At. Chisel.
LOL the chisel is always fun!
Beautiful.. But for some reason, the amount of wasted wood irks me...
around here Walnut is a dime a dozen. I got this log for free from a scrap pile at a cabinet shop.
So jealous of your hardwood resources...
@@rjamsbury1 you would be surprised how easy they are to find. I have a video on many of my resources and how to find cheap or even free lumber.
Wood By Wright - Make a road trip down here to Florida and help me find cheap resources. Other than palmetto, pine and live oak, nothing seems to be a dime a dozen.
There’s a wooden pair of flip flops in it for you.
I agree...Florida kind of sucks for hardwoods because subtropical climate
👍👍💚
Can you explain why you would make these from one piece? It seems to me that making them from three connected separate pieces requires much less wasted material and a lot less effort? So what is the rationale for carving them from a single much larger slab?
It is a traditional training project. It is easier and faster to just glue on hooks, but this is a fantastic way to learn chipping out and other chisel work. That is why I use scrap rather then the nice expensive stuff.
Thanks for the info. Your idea of scraps and mine are very different ;-)
@@Brandlin lol for me it is usable lumber but for the cabinet shop they burn hundreds of board feet of wood a day.
I just don’t like wasting that much walnut
Why? it would have been burnt for firewood if I had not used it there.
I like the bench hooks, but I'm not a huge fan of the new production style you've got going. It feels too much like a produced TV show.
It's been a while since I've seen some of your videos, so I'm not sure how long they've been with the new style. Glad things are going well with your shop and channel.
The videos on his 2nd channel are more like the older /original stlye. Instead of trying to guess the best way to head he has been doing it both ways.
I am with you. That is why I am still doing those on the second channel. Unfortunately this new style is doing much better. But the second channel is not monitized so that is more for the fun of it.
@@WoodByWright thanks for letting me know (gizanked too). I'll check it out
Is that not so wasteful of the wood?
No. The wood is free and scrap. If I did not take it off the pile it would have been burnt.
Why do a lot of youtube makers start their project with, “I had this scrap piece of exotic wood lying around” and say it is a fun cheap project and will cost a few hours. It would cost me more hours to find this type of wood not even considering the costs. Not specially this video or youtuber, but in general. Maybe would be nice to see the choises of wood and why you picked this one. Should I be looking for wallnut, or do I have alternatives? It’s not personal just general speaking about youtube woodworkers/ diy’ers.
It is a scrap of Walnut that can be found in the junk pile of any cabinet shop. I got it for free. There is nothing exotic about Walnut. And, this project can be done with any wood. This is just what I had laying around.
Wood By Wright I will rephrase, to exotic for my shed. Not the kind of wood I can buy in the normal diy stores. But than again, I usally do not find what I was looking for.
Where Are you at. I almost never shop in the big box stores for lumber. way too expensive. and they have little more than oak, pine and maple.
Wood By Wright I'm living in the Netherlands, they don't give away walnut here sadly...
Jim ware does your family originally come from. Like before the all the native Americans were killed by us white men. It's a fact all American are immigrants. Just that your surname is English.
I can not trace it back to any one group. I have ties all over Europe, and a bit of the middle east. the wright name comes from Norway.
