    • @joeymama4666
      @joeymama4666 Před 6 lety +192

      Laki Luver
      The Siouian tribe that gave Kansas and Arkansas their names were actually called Quipaw (or Quapaw). Other tribes called them by other names, which was a common thing to do among natives. One of the names of the native people who were located in what's now Kansas was "Kansa". The plural of Kansa that English speakers used was Kansas. And that stuck.
      Arkansas has a slightly different history even though it was named for the same tribe. The Algonquian people called the Quapaw various names including Kansa. However, in the Algonquin language any word that described an ethnic group had the prefix "A" added to it. So it became Akansa. The letter R slipped into the word somewhere along the way and Akansa became Arkansa. The French people in the area used the plural "Arkansas" but in plural words that end in S, (Mardi Gras for instance) the French don't pronounce that S. It remains silent. So the French called it Arkansas but pronounced it Arkansah, or Arkansaw. When English speakers came into the area, they continued to use the already established French pronunciation, and eventually the territory became a state. The pronunciation of the state's name was still somewhat up in the air, though, as more and more people came to settle in the area. In 1880 two state congressmen got a political feud going because they each pronounced the state's name differently; one pronouncing the S and one leaving it silent. As a result, the name was hotly debated and eventually legislation was passed declaring "Arkansaw" to be the official and only proper pronunciation of this state's name.
      That's why we say it that way.

    You messed up RealLifeLore. It is NOT the international date line the Aleutian Islands cross. The International Date Line goes around them. It's the Anti-meridian that the islands cross making Alaska the eastern most state because when you cross the anti-meridian you cross into the eastern hemisphere. The International Date line has zero to do with geography but rather time.

    "International date line, located here, which part of Alaska crosses over".... which islands? I'm not aware of any Alaskan islands that cross over the date line. Some cross the 180° meridian, but not the International Date Line. Am I missing something?

    • @goomy02
      @goomy02 Před 3 lety

      All a matter of definition and agreement... if considering eastern & western hemispheres based on prime meridian through Greenwich England, then Attu Island is in the eastern hemisphere at about 172 degrees east. However, the location of the international date line is quite variable and has been moved to include all the Alaskan/ USA Aleutian Islands in the two time zones [UTC -10 & UTC -11) currently in place for Alaska. The remainder of the Aleutian Islands are Russian and are in the next time zone on other side of IDL
