    And yes this is an issue here because Hairspray is literally about racial segregation, and this song in specific is a critique about how white artists steal from black artists and take credit, eg Elvis. It's VITAL that the second group of girls be black because it's a representation of their expression of culture. It's their song that the first group appropriated. Having both groups be white (with the second bizarrely just being dressed in black) takes away from that message. Someone without context might wonder what the point of the second group even is... they're all white girls, what point is trying to be made there?
    On top of that the second group sucks here, they're bad at the fast parts because they enunciate way too much, but that's just my opinion.

      Autumn, let me just say this: It's inspirational for a black character to play a white character because mainstream film and tv TAKES roles from people of color and have them played by white actors. Hairspray is a story ABOUT a television series trying to erase and suppress black people from the screen and how people fought against it so that blacks and whties could dance on air together. If they dont have any black singers they shouldnt have done it because by having the black roles played by whites, they envoke the exact same evil the show is about getting rid of. As such, the movie WHite Chicks isn't racist because it itself is a film about the ridiculousnes of blackface/whiteface. Mind you, you do realize the movie has damn near no jokes against whites, but jokes against rich people (its a parody of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. and guess what? NICOLE RICHIE IS HALF BLACK AND IDENTIFIES AS BLACK) Using white chicks as an example isnt a good case for you.

    As other people have mentioned, it is quite disturbing as a black person to watch a group of white girls play the roles of The Dynamites and I personally think that if you don't have the right cast to portray black people in this musical, don't perform it. Its not just a musical, it holds so much importance as it was set in the height of the Civil Rights Movement and addresses fat-shaming, RACISM, student activism, community-police interactions, media bias, and discrimination. So it means quite a lot that BLACK PEOPLE play theses roles, whether it's The Dynamites, Seaweed, Little Inez, Motormouth Maybelle etc. No hate to these girls, just constructive criticism and I hope you do better in the future.

    I personally don't like this. it's not because of the lack of black people, I really don't give a shit, it's just that they where lacking all the energy you need. Thats what makes a song really good. They sounded really scared in my opinion

    I liked it. Unfortunately this song isn't broadway. It was written for the movie version. I do believe the girls all had very nice voice tho

    Sadly purely bubblegum pop doesn't do it for this particular number (don't get me wrong the ladies have lovely singing voices) but the transition part of the song doesn't have that certain edginess to it that the song needed to contrast the first part

    All these people in the comments complaining about how this school probably didn't have enough black people yet I'm not seeing any people that are talking about how nice they sounded. Kinda sad how people would rather complain than compliment. This is just a bunch of high schoolers singing a song from Hairspray! Is it not understandable that their school probably didn't have enough black kids? My school literally only has three!

      That’s fine, but then don’t choose a song that’s supposed to include black people in a musical about racial integration. That’s like doing “I like to live in America” from west side story and have everyone be white...

  • @xSuccubunnyx

      Yeah this was offensive for sure. I could understand if they had 2 black girls and one Latina or something because they didn’t have enough black girls who could sing or something but 3 white girls... yikes

  • @derbread
    @derbread Před 9 lety +4

    In the show, yes, they are black. But, these girls are performing a fun number from the show "Hairspray". They were not trying to recreate the actual stage number. I think its clever that they came out in white or black dresses, respectively. For crying out loud, its a simple high school concert of Broadway music.

    Isn’t it ironic that in the white girls part the girls are wearing white dresses and the black girls part there wearing black dresses so disrespectful Mad disrespectful. This song in the movie was representing segregation and this is what they do, there’s lots of ways to get 3 black girls to sing that part 🤦🏾‍♀️

      MineGIRL Squid because the girls meant to be singing that part were meant to be black in the original which actually makes no sense coz the hairspray musical has this song to show the racial difference of the singers but they were all white XD
