      @Kelly Hudson Thanks for the insight into the breathing part of shooting that rifle. I don't have a gun, but I teach yoga and the importance of breath. When people get a handle on various types of breathing, they get greater control over not only their emotions and thoughts, but their bodies as well. I suppose the exhalation is considered to be the more stable physical condition to maintain aim by reducing unwanted fluctuations in the shot. Thanks again, and welcome to the channel!!

      RockN2Country You’re welcome. I have to say, I found out about the rifle and the breathing from someone else who commented on a version of this song, lol. I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Thank you for the note and the welcome.( as I remind myself to not breathe from the top of my lungs, lol.)

    This song and Elephant are still my 2 favorites. No one out there, today, is writing with the depth and reality that Jason does. The beautiful melodies and timbre of his songs make them palatable enough for people to actually LISTEN to the stories and take them in. Very impactful songwriting style. He will go down in musical history as one of the greatest storytellers of our time. He actually has a degree in English/creative writing. He said in a recent interview that when he writes music he creates characters then waits to see where that character goes. I don't think everything he writes about is something he's experienced personally, just things that he takes note of and creates a story around them. But that doesn't lessen the impact. He knows what he's doing. I would love to see him write a screenplay someday.

      @Lily McAllister Thanks for the kind words and thoughts about the song. I try to keep my potty mouth to a minimum, but every so often I'm fine with letting go a bit. And when I say I held back during this reaction, I held back on my fuller thoughts about the guy referred to. But songs will make is think and feel things, and as we know, not all of it is rainbows and roses. But next week I have a few feel-good songs lined up, on purpose. We also need to laugh!

    • @lilymcallister9751
      @lilymcallister9751 Před 5 lety +1

      @@RockN2Country I may have an unpopular opinion about "potty mouth", but I believe words are sounds to express emotions. None are good words or bad words, just words. And sometimes the situation calls for strong emotions. I am an avid user of strong emotional words and will never feel the need to apologize for them with two exceptions: 1. Around anyone under the age of 16. And 2. Around anyone who feels very uncomfortable with hearing them. Like a lot of personal choices, I do not impose them on others but I don't hide them either. Not that YOU do..I know a platform like this is a whole nuther hickory nut. Also..I find it very interesting that different words have different meanings as far as expression goes depending on where you are. There are some countries where words we use commonly are considered extremely profane. And I think that's just fascinating about human nature that every culture has that division about language. Language is just fascinating to me over all. But I digress. You just do you. Potty mouth or no potty mouth. ❤

    Weatherby is one bad*ss rifle...the king of high velocity! They are an American company out of Wyoming and produce weapons that outclass even the best Remingtons and Winchesters. To this day, they still make the most powerful hunting cartridge on the planet! Its use on the father in this song was simple destiny...as the Weatherby's design and lethalness continued to be refined, the father's sickness and cruelty continued to grow as well...until finally they meet! I don't personally own a Weatherby, Henry is my go-to for rifles and my shotgun is a Stoeger. And of course, I support the NRA! :-)

When he won a Grammy for Vampires it took him 5 minutes to get to the stage because he was seated so far back in the theatre. Time for him to be front and center. A big part of Jason’s story is that he’s a recovering alcoholic, so his songwriting is deep and haunting because of it.

    This is the quite little stunner that gets lot a bit on first listening to "Southeastern" because it has so many great songs before it but its a knockout. What is so great about the song is how it hits the idea of wrecked childhood from two directions. First the girl who is being sexually abused by her father, and then the protagonist, who is just a boy who is thrust into a position of grave responsibility too soon. He isn't a man but he understands the obligations of chivalry intrinsic to the southern notion of manhood. He does what he understands to be the right thing, and neither of us would convict him, but he can't be a boy anymore after that. Just fantastic lyrics and deeply emotional music

    • @RockN2Country
      @RockN2Country  Před 5 lety +1

      @Simeon Teitelbaum Solid analysis all the way around right there. And as George Michael said in one of his songs, "some mistakes are built to last." Some mistakes we make hurt ourselves, others are more inclusive and cast a wide net. In Jason's song there's an abused daughter (a daughter, for fvck's sake), a (presumably) dead father, a widow, and a boy who has to answer for it. Even if no charges are brought, he's got to live with it. People move on, but that kind of stuff lives with them for life.

      @@RockN2Country Very well said. From what I've read this song and several others on "Southeastern" came out of conversations he had with people at bars across the south (Jason was a pretty hardcore drunk until 2013). Each of these people had some awful story to tell, either about childhood abuse, or war, or some other trauma. Listen to many of Jason's songs and they're some version of these testimonials. He wrote several songs about war veterans too

    I think I said it on your reaction to "Live Oak" but he is one of the best around. As I said on that video he just documents the events and leaves us to make up our own minds. What would we do in this situation? Is he right to kill him? What should the consequences be for killing him? It opens up loads of questions about justice, human nature and what is moral, regardless of whether or not it is legal. And as you say, Don, he does it all without preaching to us or telling us what to think.

    A murder ballad about a literal family affair, "Yvette" spins the story of a teenaged boy who admires a quiet, glassy-eyed schoolmate from across the classroom. He follows her home one night and watches through the window, horrified, as her father walks into her bedroom and inflicts some unspeakable acts of abuse. "He won't hold you that way anymore, Yvette," Isbell promises, returning to the scene of the crime later that evening with a Weatherby rifle in his arms and revenge on his mind. Although the song wraps up before he pulls the trigger, we're guessing this story ends with a bang.

      Actually, in the song he does shoot him. The line where he says that he lets out his breath, and couples with death, is when he took the shot.

    There are layers in my opinion, the fact the narrator was watching outside the house, things of that nature? His obsession is strange also. Maybe I’m reading too much, but it’s like the poor girl was probably in trouble either way.

      @Punche On Oh yeah, after I reacted to Jason's song I said to myself, I've gotta do some uplifting tunes right away! Since I primarily do reactions, I don't know a song's content before going into it. But after a few gut-wrenching songs in a row, I'm ready for some happy, uptempo songs.

      @Pamela Hammons Thank you for your agreement on that one! When I was editing the video I had to decide whether or not to take the two f-bombs out, but given the subject matter I decided to leave them in. Some things capture a sentiment ideally, even if not entirely socially acceptably, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I really really don't like the guy I was referring to in that video, and Jason Michael Carroll's song "Alyssa Lies" was also flooding through my mind while envisioning the scenario Jason Isbell was painting. The whole thing brought me to a boiling point, which I contained, but I've always had a hatred for any man who abuses his kids. And rape of his own daughter, are you kidding me? I'm not a huge death penalty advocate, but would pay for the bullet or the electricity. Actually, any man raping a woman is worthy of the death penalty IMO. I guess we all have our own sensitivities, and that's mine.

      @RockN2Country  Před 5 lety

      @Tom James I haven't done it yet, but it's VEVO so it might be tough. Also, I'll have to listen to the first few seconds to see if it's along the lines of FGL's regular style, which wouldn't;t fit in with the red-dirt theme I mostly have going here. But sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised by an artist/s going old school. Thoughts?

      @@RockN2Country thats fair enough. If it helps they only feature for about 10 seconds of the song. The rest is more country rock sound. If not Cadillac three have other good songs like Peace loving Dixie and days of gold.

    One thing I don't think was touched on is that the protagonist is very young himself. He states that he's not a man yet and he's in class with Yvette. So maybe between 15 and 17. He wouldn't understand why her mother might not protect her (not implying that's OK). Also his actions are premeditated. So we're looking at a boy, who apparently is skilled with a rifle, planning to kill a predator. I'm not objecting to the actions he took, it's just an interesting twist to the story for me.
