- F1 is back and the new 2024 season kicks off with the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir. Red Bull dominated last year and look like the favourites again after testing, but can anyone stop Max Verstappen getting his title defence off to the best possible start? In this preview, I take a look at some of the track stats, run through the weather forecast, talk tyres and strategy. Plus, Bahrain talking points and I make some weekend predictions.

Christian Horner has been cleared of allegations of inappropriate behaviour after investigation: bit.ly/3SUpwHl
I think it was an independent investigation.
I hope that the decision made on the position of Horner is because the allegations were actually unfounded. It seems weird to me that the board needed time to decide after the report was delivered, last week(?). Maybe RB should make the report available.
@@transient_ I doubt we'll get any type of report. While it was investigated by a independent 3rd party it's considered an internal investigation within the company so there is really no need for them release any kind of information.

@@mh518 If the entire affair had been handled internally you would be right. But it hasn't been. Now there will always be doubts. Where there's smoke there's fire, right? Horner has suffered maybe irrepairable harm. As has the female employee if the allegations were true. Maybe they settled with her financially and Horner is now free to continue doing as he did before. I'm just speculating here, but still...

The most awaited tyre talk is back. The season has truly begun.
Two points:
Firstly, keep the tyre talk - they're always amusing segways into which tyres are available. Could also throw in if a team has more sets of x compound compared to others (if it's a significant difference).
Secondly, nice to see you mention F2/F3 in these, would you also be able to include the timings for each Quali/Sprint/Feature? Especially now that the F2/F3 Twitter accounts aren't setting their profile headers to the weekend schedule, it's harder to find the times.
edit: just checked after posting this - they've since updated their headers to reflect the session timings. oops

It bothers me this is what passes for excitement, we know Red Bull will clean up, but how hard will they do it? I don't think I'll be watching much this season if it is a celebration procession again.

Fun segue into tyre talk - the race is held in March, the 3rd month of the year which is also the number of dry tyre compounds available during a race weekend 😅
I love the tyre talk segways, they're somehow simultaneously surprising and predictable and always make me smile - and sets of that tingle of excitement in my tummy when race weekend approaches. It's become part of the overall F1 experience for me.

Just like you, we are excited to see this season unfold. With all the radical upgrades appearing on all cars, this weekend, even if Max & Checo take P1 & P2, the rest of the field is guaranteed to make the rest of the season very interesting.

Hardest in the Pirelli range? Isnt their a C0 since last year if i remember correctly?
The C0 was dropped for 2024 because it was never used/needed. We’re back to the C1-C5 range.
Horner has been cleared internally but that decision was not unanimous so there is a possibility this matter is not over.

from the pirelli website: There are six slick compounds within the range, numbered from zero to five from hardest to softest. These are known as C0 to C5, with the ‘C’ standing for ‘compound’. Meaning the hardest three would be C0-C2 and not C1-C3 as you mentioned.
Pirelli announced in November last year that the C0 compound would be dropped from the range for 2024. Therefore, the range is now back to being C1-C5. The C1, C2 and C3 are the hardest in the range for 2024.
For a change, instead of doing tyre talk, try doing tire talk. Being Canadian, I could then translate your talk into English :)

Why wouldn’t Mercedes break in a new driver since hammy is leaving, Mercedes should kick him to the curb
Contract. They can make more money by keeping him on for the year than by paying whatever they'd have to to remove him, hire a new driver, and try to overcome those expenses.
He is the reason why they were able to finish 2nd last year. He will most likely be the reason they finish a position higher if things are close again.
Also who do they have to just bring in right now anyway
