The hardest part is keeping client safe when your scissoring around the ear. Standing directly in front of it and then using your technique of combing it down then twisting the comb to act as a barrier really gave me some latitude in the fear department. I had been leaving a little too much in the front of the ear because the angle is so awkward. No more! You inspired me.
I usually cut my sons hair at home because he’s autistic and he has a hard time with other people doing it. He is 10 years old and typically I just buzz it all over. This time I wanted to try something different so I watched your video and it helped me a lot with figuring out how to do it, if I wanted to leave the top part longer. I wanted to try a different look for his school pictures and it turned out great, so much so that my boyfriend wanted me to try his. Today I cut my boyfriends hair because he finally trusted me enough to do it. So thank you for this tutorial.

6 months licensed, getting better with my shear work. I am getting more confident with this area because I learned how to properly shear and palm and hold the comb now I am ready to try your refining method to get improved results. You explain things very good it does help

Your videos are SO helpful! The way you teach is understandable and clear. Thank you! Right now I’m in Barber school in Manhattan. 1 month in, 3 to go. I’m a bit disappointed so far that it seems like the school is really only teaching me what I’ll need to know to pass the state board exam. Everything else is a bit like “figure it out yourself”. Something we’re not really getting taught about, or getting the opportunity to practice a lot of (maybe because of the demographic) is scissor cuts. Right now I’m really struggling to wrap my head around the method. I’ll get kind of lost in the hair and not know what to do. Like I’m just taking shots in the dark. “Ooh, that didn’t really help, maybe this will work.”

I started cutting my sons hair and have the fade pretty much down but struggle on the scissor cut. I can't wait to give this a go.

1. Since I always cut by myself, I feel like I don't know what I am doing right or wrong. I wish a senior barber could review my work and give me feedback!
2. I think my biggest challenge is letting go. I spend too much time during the "debulking" phase getting it perfect instead of getting the overall shape right and refineing at the end. This video was timely! I will work on that tomorrow as I cut hair!
3. The fringe seems to alway give me grief! I have to cut it multiple times before I feel it looks right.
4. I wish I could fly to Scotland and spend some time with you in your shop. You are an excellent teacher!
To answer 1 and 4, you probably would benefit from going to a barber type conference. I go to a lot of them. In the UK my favourites have probably been barber bash. They will generally have a group of top barbers demonstrating all sorts of skills. And at some workshops you can bring a model and they will talk you through cuts. I've certainly benefitted in a big way.
FRINGES - I am definitely going to do content on that. Everyone asks about fringes, I'm going to make that a priority video.
I'm a dog groomer. So I know how to handle scissors, combs, etc. very well. However, my husband asked me to cut his hair, and that's definitely not a breed I've done before, so this was very helpful. 😂 thank you!
The hardest thing for me is that my husband has locks like Fabio and can swing from hair to his shoulds to a clean upper cut and fade. I'd love some more tutorials on very long to short for mens hair, scissors only.

For some reason I really struggle with fringes. The current trend among teenagers - certainly in my part of the U.K. - is to have long floppy fringes that are out of proportion with the rest of the hair. The sides then tend to billow out and I find it hard to judge the length.
This video has come along at the right time. In the shop we don’t tend to get many all-over scissor cuts and when we do I find I tend to struggle a little because I don’t get enough practice. But this video is fantastic - lots of info and it’s simplified everything. Thank you.

I cut my hubbys hair about 1ce a month or longer he has half grey and half dark. It is also loose curls. I'm learning as I go. Lol. I use scissors and some clippers . I enjoy both.

Great content! I’ve been barbering for 3 yrs biggest struggle to learn was scissor over comb and figuring out sectioning the crown area with certain haircuts, depending how their crown sits and with the hair style they want. Finding content like this has been a help.

Just into 2nd week at LSB. Manchester 9 week NVQ. I’m 54years old, have always wanted for 30 years to learn Barbering, I’ve been in construction and quarrying related industries all my working life, so a real, change for me but I’m loving the training, and the new lease of life and the chance to do something I’ve always had a passion for. Hope I pass the course, as much advice you could give me would be appreciated. Going forward, I do have the chance to take on a one man barbershop, but don’t know if that’s too much to soon. Mate I really admire anyone who takes the leap and switches careers like that completely and I think you are in the right place to learn. The LSB has a great reputation. Personally I wouldn’t go straight into running a shop. I’d try and get a bit of time in a good shop and watch the business side of it but also practice what you’ve learned in volume and you’ll become very proficient.

Barber here, been working now for almost 2 years. Still learning something most days. My struggle is always the blend point between the clipper work and the top..it's going ok but I find I really have to work hard to get a nice blend. Any tips would always be gratefully received
It's often the toughest part of the cut Paul. That's a piece of content I need to think about making. You can't underestimate how large a subject it is though as the blend can be different on different hair types and head shapes. I think having a handful of techniques that you can pick and choose from is key

I’m a barber in a very busy shop. I do this type of cut many many times a day. However I was taught to cut the perimeter first and work up from the bottom.
You can do it both ways. I prefer working from the top down as I don't like the weight laying on top of my section when working bottom up

I’ve been cutting hair for about 3 years now and I work in a barbershop. I struggle with flat tops and would love to see you make a video on how to do a proper flat top. I also struggle with blend the top with the side whenever I cut hair for a customer that slicks the hair back.
I probably can’t help with flat tops as I don’t have any clients at the moment who have a flat top. However the blend in slicked back hair would be good info. I’ll try and get it on the channel

I tried my first attempt at cutting my husband’s hair today. He has a large bald spot with thin, fine but slightly wavy hair. I think I did fairly well for the first time except my scissors were not sharp enough. I saw a small gap at the neckline, but hopefully this will be grown out by Christmas. He liked it anyway. I’ll know what to do differently next time, I think.

The fringe is a tricky area. In fact I would say that the fringe and the crown are the two hardest areas to cut.

I cut my little boy's hair, which is VERY curly. We live in Asia, where most barbers don't have a good understanding of naturally curly hair... So, unless we go really short, he has the best chance of a decent scissor-cut is at home. His curls are beautiful, so I try and keep the top longer. But, the curls tighten at different lengths so it is a real challenge! I'd love tips if you have them!

Been cutting family & friends hair since high school; had one year of beauty school after college, but had to drop out. My biggest struggle is keeping track of the guide (I never knew about the guide until beauty school). I seem to do better when I 'freestyle' ;-)
To be honest I don't really use guides either, I did to start with it helped me understand but after such a long time I just know what I'm cutting now.

I trim my husband’s hair, he has a cow lick on the crown of his head. Sometimes, his barber cuts that area to short and then the hair sticks straight up making him appear like Alfalfa. You may not remember that character as a small boy in the early tv shows. But his hair was always sticking up as part of his character! I am trying to master the scissor cut.

Love your videos. Started working at a predominantly men’s salon after cutting women’s hair. Hardest thing for me is… using a 2 or 3 guard…I always end up too much weight around the parietal ridge and I fight blending the curvature of the head.

After watching this so many times today I’ve just tried it on a client tonight. I think it went well, only issue I had was finding my guide. My client is older and has straight white hair with a cotton wool type texture. And tips for this kind of hair please ?
Yes two tips. Make sure you keep it wet all the way through the cut. And if you are losing your guide just slow it down and make your sections thinner.

Great channel I've been cutting my own hair since lockdown. Could you do a video on hairstyles to best hide or limit the bad look of a receding hairline at the corners on the temple.
If I find a volunteer I will make that video. The trick is to actually not hide it. You can emphasise the recession sometimes by keeping it long. This is because those areas are see through. It's best to have a normal fringe shape but bring it higher. That's what I find anyway.
The hardest part is learning when to put in different guards or open and close the clippers.
I think you over time you will become seamless at choosing. Sometimes I choose a guard and don’t even know why I just feel it’s the best one to choose

Get nervous around cutting longer hair types to the shoulder and even past the ears. My hand movement is awkward is there a way to show beginner stage on how easy to make the connection when it comes to a 1 fade or skin fade and or scissor cuts too. I have no issue with clipper over comb but i get nervous w that too
I understand that. The connection on fades is the tricky bit, and long hair is nothing to be scared of. It's all about having a plan or method and stick to it.

i generally have to cut very short cuts with clipper work. i am confident enought to take any clipper hairstyle. But when someone ask me to cut hes hair with a longer hairstyle, i already start sweating and try to find an excuse. eventhogh i know that practise makes perfect.
the debulking part seems pretty staightforward woth the scissors, where i find difficulty is the refining part. you cut the excess hairs over the comb. when i try and do that, i usually create a harsh line. Any tips on how to prevent that?

Absolutely key at your stage is that your sections are small, and you can see a little bit of your previous section.

I’m struggling clippers over comb on the paritial ridge. When I do my fades, I try to leave bulk at the ridge so it’s a nice transition but I struggle with blending it with clippers over comb. I want to save time instead of using guards.
I also think this is the most problematic area, when you go up from the nape and hit the curve of the occipital bone, the hair is now getting longer quickly, which also means darker quicker. And not so stretched out. Doing the fade below or above the occipital bone is magnitudes easier but doesn't always work for head shape, sometimes it has to be on the ridge, keep doing it though as you will get better the more you have to do it.

Work with colicky and curly hair in crown area
That is tough to work with. Double and even treble crowns can cause mayhem on a haircut.
Graduated fe school last May. I’d say my BIGGEST issue is that I either cannot see or don’t know what to look for in a guide.
I’ve tried googling to find videos that go in depth in terms of how to find/identify guides and cannot find any. In school my teacher even spent time writing up something to help, but it did not.
One other issue is with the practice heads. It is even more difficult to find guides on those so practicing using more difficult.
This is especially true in trying to practice scissor over comb.
Would love to see a video with a strong focus on identifying guides :)
I am making a video at the moment which has top down shots. You can clearly see the guides so I will zoom in and slow it down.

What gets confusing in general when watching tutorials online is when what I see when working does not look at all like what I am watching.
The hair on the heads is often not as dense and will be sewn in a direction that makes it look vastly different that what we are seeing.
I’m sure many people can adapt. For me it really throws me off. And I’m not talking about your videos, but ones in general…..

I'm in the north east of Scotland. The city of Aberdeen.
Model heads are really useful but they do have limitations. They don't have as much hair and are often only made with Asian hair which is quite coarse and straight. They are also threaded very strongly in certain directions

I’ve been practicing for these gentleman haircuts and I’m impressed by your clipper over comb cutting up to down and I’ve been training clipper over comb down to up and this is interesting to try and I’m going to practice your way I’m trying to be able to take off hair and know what I’m going to do from start to finish I need help
This method takes a bit of repetition to learn, but keep going, once you've used it 10 times you'll be surprised at how easy it becomes.

My hardest is fading military cuts from a 0 up and blending out that line.
Do you have a zero gapped blade? That's really important

You'll get there. Everyone is slow initially. When you can do it without thinking you'll be fast.

How do you manage boys with mixed (black white) thick hair and scissor cut? Not a fade fan. Stay at home mom trying to do my best for my husband and sons. I can't afford a nice set of clippers yet, so its the horrid Walmart 30 dollar set.
