Master locks are notoriously easy to defeat. Master lock is Much better at marketing than they are at security. The advantage of the master lock is that it is pretty tough against physical attacks. Lock picking is not used that often in crimes. Picking is involved in less that 6 percent of B&Es. Most thieves use destructive force.

Nice piece of metal too. Tried it out on some "MIC" (made in china) locks and it sure did snap it open helping me get to my locked-inside key. Dont ask, im not very proud of locking it inside its own lockbox. the guard around the latch prevents hacksaws and bolt cutters to have access, and i didnt want to scratch the chit out of my lockbox. thx, ITStactical.

I know pretty much squat about lock picking, but I've had pretty good luck with these on Brinks padlocks that have both heel and toe dogs, just by giving the stick a slight clockwise twist while rocking it. If I combine it with a tension wrench, all it takes is slipping this stick right down the center and giving it a little wiggle. I'll see if I can find a Master Lock to try it on.

Mr. DeepWoods is the "king of comments" on this subject." Cheap locks can be shimmed, others can be bypassed (I've done it with a pencil and wide rubber band to put tension on shackle while rolling the dial wheels) but, when Mr. DWoods starts talking about "setting pins", then he's talking about tensioning, & "picking" locks. Practice, Practice, Practice and you can defeat most out there. Masters, Yales, Americans, etc. And forget about "shimming with Soda Pop Cans" unless you're into blood and stiches.

Mr.quim1970, I've purchased a nice set of "combs" from South Ord, lightly filed the tips the ends ("so they should glide easily into the key way"), counted the pins first, tried the Master 101's, 103's 105's, Yales, and I've had absolutely "NO" success. Not a single comb would budge even the tiniest bit. Can you offer a slight solution? I'm a very good picker but the combs I can't move with?

master locks are more of a seal than a lock. they can let you know if someone has used bolt cutters and got in your storage shed. the advantage with this type of bypass key is someone can get into your stuff and put it right back on and you never notice. that way they can steal from you for months without tipping you off. I made one of those out of a kitchen knife that works great on number 1 and 3 master locks. I use it at work instead of having to carry a huge key ring.

Yeah, I bought these from you guys a long time ago. Um, they really only work on the cheapest of locks. A Master #3 is THE most basic lock you will ever see in any quantity and they don't work on those. That, being said, #3's are so easy, you just tension with a wrench and use a worm/city/tri-peak rake like a cantilever= you'll pop most of them in 15 seconds or so. I've picked maybe 50 #3's as they are used to lock the toilet paper roles in every bathroom at the U I stay at. I think I've found like 2 that took a little more time or required SPPing. It's not that it's a bad tool, I have my pair for 2+ years= it's just that I never use them when just raking open all the basic or worse locks is just as easy. Not to mention, if the pick doesn't work= you're gonna have to rake or SPP it anyways, so why go through the extra step.

Are these too wide to use on cuffs? and yeah, you should be able 2 open double dogs, thats why your sending 2 right? Looking at the design...I think if instead of inserting the way you are, straight down the keyway, point at the top try flipping the tool and slide it in at an angle...now the tip is at the inner most point and the handle is on the other side, now you're using the middle of the tool as a pivot point!! Stick the other one in opposite to the 1st pinch together, Voila, Mini Peterson?

I prefer picking locks. It's a lot more effective in my opinion, because if it has dual latches, then picking it is as easy as if it had only one. Also, not all locks can be bypassed. If it's a more expensive lock, then it might have a barrier built in, and if it's a cheap lock, then you can bypass it, but you can probably just as easily pick it by raking it, even with a pick made from a paper clip, which I have done when I first started learning how to pick locks.

For those of us who didn't come here to learn how to steal from others, can you tell me what kind of padlock to buy that is HARD to pick open? How do I know the lock I'm thinking of buying has a double-heel?

If it doesnt say double ball bearing somewhere on it you're throwing away money. The masterlock pro series locks are decent values the 911 and 931 and the 6321s the stanley 928 series of locks are good values. Any of the old american lock brand locks are good to go and decent values.

Also your average thief couldn't pick their way out of a wet paper bag worry less about picking more about bolt cutters and other destructive entry types. Picks are for people who dont want you to be able to tell they were there.
