- The rules for multiplying and dividing integers are different than the rules for adding and subtracting integers. We review the rules for addition and subtraction of integers. For multiplication and division, when we have like signs, our answer is positive. When we have unlike signs, the answer is negative. We use a number line to see what happens when we multiply a positive number by a negative number. Multiplication is repeated addition. We draw arrows to represent each repeated addend. The Commutative Property of Multiplication states that two or more numbers can be multiplied in any order without changing the product. But, if we change the order of our factors, our number line will be drawn differently.
