- The BBC show 'That Old Cup Magic' broadcast on 6th January 1989, recalling past memories of the FA Cup and looking ahead to that year's third round. Please note that due to copyright claims some of the music in this video has been muted.
And at the start of the season this program was shown we had one of the biggest shocks ever with Sutton beating Coventry. Although the FA cup that season, 88/89, will always be remembered with sadness because of hillsborough.
When the cup mattered. All day build up to the 3pm kick off.
You can't tell kids today how huge the FA Cup used to be; with clubs getting fined for fielding weakened teams in the LEAGUE to save their best for the Cup! Ironically it was the FA who destroyed the cup. For me the rot started when they limited ties to one replay-I know all the arguments-but when Sheffield Wednesday-then in Division 3 took Arsenal to 5 games the whole country was watching and talking. This added to the rot as ties were decided on penalties and when the final was decided on penalties that was 100 years of magic history trashed. Again-I know it was pompous-but we all took radios on a Monday to find out who got who in the Cup, Draws directly after the round may be "cooler" but never comes close to the old pompous version. The truth is that the Cup doesn't matter now, and no matter what they try to do to revive it cant ever repair the huge damage done.

From 2021, no FTA TV network in Britain will have live and exclusive coverage of the FA Cup because both BBC One and ITV will show it all on FTA, including the final, which, ironically, was on those two channels in the 80s due to there only being 4 channel analogue television in this country at that time.
