How Much Does Sailing in Japan Cost? AND Is My New Dyneema Rigging A Disaster?

  • Today I answer viewer's questions as to the Costs of Cruising in Japan.
    And a question on dyneema rigging creep issue.
    Regards cost of cruising in Japan:
    These are my own personal take on the costs, based on actually living, cruising and doing work on other peoples sailboats, here in Japan.
    Like the majority of cruisers coming in to Japan, I don't have the advantage of being fluent in speaking or reading Japanese.
    Dyneema Creep:
    The Dyneema creep issue is fairly complex, and involves temperature and working loads etc. What I have answered is just the basic common sense part of the question.
    I could go on in great length and detail about, heat treatment in fibre versus braided versus type of dyneema, end usage and the type of boat you have, actual rope size versus practical sizes, costs etc.
    I feel it would be like talking about anchors and anchoring (synthetic versus s/s) . In short nothing but divisive, a bit of a windup and pointless.
    So kept it very simple, with three points to keep in mind.
    1/ Use the correct Dyneema
    2/ The diamater of your Dyneema
    3/ How good/tight your splice is
    But most importantly, I had the help and advice from Peter Greig a professional Synthetic Rigger.

    Hi Daniel, Simon here from the Netherlands! Love your video's and love to see more... would even consider flying over and crew with you for a while if that is in the stars. Hope to build my own Wharram some day, probably a size smaller but that Islander is a beauty!!! Best wishes from a cold and windy flat land :D

    Kia ora Dan. Enjoying these Q&A sessions. Would love to hear about and see Tiare's rudder/helming set up and also the main sail sheeting/traveller arrangement. Cheers, Grant. (always hunting down good ideas for our T38 build)

    Hey Dan, off topic, but I keep hearing about free houses in Japan ‘Akiya’ . Is this a thing in your area?

    • @SeaJapan
      @SeaJapan  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi Dave, Akiya just means empty or vacant house. Yes lots around here, not many are free, although free ones do exist. Prices can range from free or one yen, up to many millions of yen, and from move in and livable tomorrow, to demolish and build new. But they all do needs some money for title transfer, local taxes etc.
      Akiya are everywhere in Japan, some in really amazing locations. The value in my mind is the land they sit on, the location and communities they are in. Generally when you buy a house in Japan and you live there, you are also committing to the local community. So for example a small yearly fee for temple or Shrine maintenance along with other “community” services, time given to maintain and take part in festivals etc.
      Hope this is helpful. Cheers

    What does it cost to checkin in Japan?

    • @SeaJapan
      @SeaJapan  Před rokem

      Hi, don’t think there is any cost to check into Japan. There is a requirement to fill out an online pre-arrival procedure form. This makes check in a bit easier, otherwise you have to anchor out for 24hrs which might not be great.
