Swarm exploration by tiny flying robots

  • We present a swarm of autonomous flying robots for the exploration of unknown environments. The tiny robots do not make maps of their environment, but deal with obstacles on the fly. In robotics, the algorithms for navigating like this are called "bug algorithms". The navigation of the robots involves them first flying away from the base station and later finding their way back with the help of a wireless beacon.
More details on the navigation solution and the swarm of robots can be found in the following scientific article:
Minimal navigation solution for a swarm of tiny flying robots to explore an unknown environment, K.N. McGuire, C. De Wagter, K. Tuyls, H. Kappen, G.C.H.E. de Croon. Science Robotics.

If I would get 1 dollar for every robotics researcher saying their research "could be used for search and rescue" to ethically green wash that they are actually developing military technology, i would be a millionaire

It can be used for searching. To rescue or to destroy is our choice after that point. Sadly the later gets more attention.

The drone-based technologies have unlimited possibilities, but at this time unfortunately too limited by batteries' energy density.

If its enough to track and kill your enemies its good enough for war. The future of modern life for humans is wearing a helmet all day.

Often, when a person is trying to convey an interesting idea to me, and I'm not quite getting it, I wish I could stare down their ear-holes to aid comprehension. Thank goodness for the makers of this video then.
    Cool drones though.

If you had a wireless charger broadcasting from one room, could you keep them airborne indefinitely? Or would they eventually overheat? I've only seen it done with bigger drones outdoors with a transmission tower.

Swarm drones are extremely dangerous and will be a new weapon on a modern battlefield as low altitude airspace denial weapon and SAM battery countermeasures.
