  • After posting a photo of me sitting in front of the replica bus used in the movie "Into the Wild', I couldn't believe the amount of comments I got. People were still very passionate about Chris's story and his life and death in the Alaskan wilderness. They were still passionate about visiting the bus where he died, still passionate about whether he was wrong or right. In this video I revisit his story and share my feelings. Then I take you on a tour of the replica bus that sits in the parking lot of the 49th Brewing Company in Healy, Alaska.
    Let me know what you think!
    Thank you for your views, comments, and support!

    I have his and his sister’s books in my biology classroom in Fairfax Co., Virginia...... for some reason they speak to me. I feel great sorrow for Chris and his sister......their parent’s sent him over the edge. I grew up about 10-15 miles from them and feel a connection. I think Chris’s sense of adventure was calling him and that resonates with so many of us as well........”get to living or get to dying.” Great story, inspiring story, and a tragic story.

    I picked his book up in Panama after a hike over some mountains. I was in the Navy, our driver stopped at the army base there and I saw the book and it looked curious to me. I was in the habit of taking off from Va Beach where I lived at the time when in port. I would go hike the mountains in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania. I would often hitch hike to states on the east coast. His sense of reckless adventure resonated with me. I was extremely reckless in my youth and luckily I had joined the Navy to help over in Kuwait and Bosnia. To this day the story tugs at my heart, I still yearn for that adventure but now I have 4 kids and a wife to care for. I tell my wife all the time that she is the one that calmed me and saved me from myself and guided me to Jesus. Thanks for everything you do. My little girl (7) loves to watch you cook. :) She also said you were "inspirational". My younger 2 love watching videos of you guys. God Bless.

    Hi Brooke I just found this video. I remember when this happened I was 33 at the time. I believe Chris did what he did because of his life up until then he wanted to get out away on his own not to prove anything but just to do it. I still think of his journey now every time I get out and explore areas where I camp. I think there were just to many things combined that went wrong with his adventure that caused him his life. Thank you I thought your video was nice.

    Thank you for doing this video! Chris's story is something that resonates for so many reasons, the main being that seeking out total freedom and adventure is completely appealing, but ultimately we find that we do need other people, not just for basic survival but to feel a sense of comradery in life. I will definitely read the two books you recommended to get more of his story, thanks again!

    Thanks for sharing this. I've always felt sorry for him. He had so much love of life and energy but was so ill-equipped to handle the reality of true survival in such a harsh environment. Still, his story resonates with many and the lesson we should all take from it is that you should never go into such a situation unprepared. Thanks again!

    For some reason this brought to mind John Hornby, a similar story of adventure and starvation from 100 years or so ago. I remember visiting his grave on the northeastern arm of Great Bear Lake when I was 17, and being both inspired and saddened by his story. Thankful to my father for bringing that story alive.

    I read the book and saw the movie and broke down at the end of both. I've never completely understood why I had that reaction. I had a son about the same age at the time and he was going through some tough decisions and maybe I pictured him alone and grappling with life decisions. The overhead picture at the end of the movie of Chris laying there has a profound effect on me to this day.

    I think part of why his story is still talked about so much is that it really touches on what you mention - that many people want to go out and do what he did in a sense. To have that great adventure. (one of the many reasons why being a contestant on Alone must have been so rad) It's unsettling to hear that ultimate adventure story ending so tragically. I think it gets folks riled up. It's hard to describe the emotions I feel when I hear this story and another one - remember the grizzly bear guy who lived with grizzly bears in the wild for a few summers and eventually died from a bear attack? That one is also so unsettling. The man was doing what he loved, living a mind blowing exciting adventure that you can't even believe is real. But it was real - and had some very real consequences. There is something about these stories that just keep you thinking. Thanks for taking us on the tour! And you're right, there's so many sides to the story.

  • @jeffnotti9932
    @jeffnotti9932 Před 5 lety +17

    One thing is for sure, let me paraphrase Hunter Thompson “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, (scared all over) thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What A Ride. I think that sums it up the best. That is what McCanless did and is the hardest to understand. Though at face value he was very foolishly ill prepared. But for some reason he comes across as a good soul. a happy and libertine, until nature bit him really hard in the @$$. Unfortunately he was ill prepared for a lot more then this adventure. At some point ideology runs into the freight train of reality. The firs part of his epitaph says "Happiness is only real when shared" he really exercised is right to pursue happiness. The second part or the epitaph reads "The very basic core of a mans's living spirit is his passion for adventure" , may be so The human condition yearns for relevance, that relevance can only be satisfied when he or she can by the work of his own hands and the sweat of his own brow accomplish a means, for a self sufficient way of life, that bring the fellowship and comfort of a home. We all know and understand that we are endowed by the Creator with curtain unalienable rights;: that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Every person in some way wants that adventure, to follow the interests that spark their minds to greatness and joy. Apparently McCandless grabbed a hold his freedom and liberty and went to free himself. That feeling for grabbing on to the dream and following it is something we all have in side. He wanted the satisfaction of self sufficiency. to feel the deep accomplishment of self sufficiency, but it cost him his life. i find it most disturbing that he would drop himself in such a hostile place with out preparation... i live in a fairly populated place with the best of both world's and i never leave the house with out 2 knives. His story is very multi faceted: sad, inspiring, confusing, and may be a lesson in futility. Nature is in no way a respecter of persons. Nature will kill you.

After McCandless died and became a star, I made many attempts to get out to the bus, but I never made it. Always got side-tracked by one of my team mates on a side-trail to somewhere else. I was always taught that life is a team sport, and that "rugged individualism (or the concept thereof) had its limits". And Chris was certainly our teacher in that regard. There are a lot of deceased rugged individualists who ignored their team mates. Thanks Girl for being a good team mate!

    Thank you for again reminding me of Chrises story; whatever others say of him, I feel ver close to Chris...we had similiar childhoods, I to felt alone and pushed aside by "family". I ran away from them and isolated myself from others. At one point in my life, I managed to become the caretaker of a hunting camp in northern Colorado. Spent a year there, alone but unlike Chris, I came out and sadly came back into "society"...I hate it! I still retain the thoughts of going back into the wilds to live out the remainder of my time here; due to my mid 70s...I may never get back again. I ave always understood Chris, envied his chance to do as he wished. Maybe he made a few bad choices; but we all do that. His story will always be with me, would have liked to have met him in person, but sadly that will never be. I can not say nor think anything bad of him regardless what others may think. Chris followed his dream...but sadly his family lost alot by him doing so. Again I thank you for taking the time to briefly remind us of his story; I hope he found his peace!

    While I fully appreciate his desire to get and away from it all and get deeper into it all, I can only shake my head in amazement that he did not think to prepare, to learn about what he was about to do. Not knowing how to live out there, what all to eat or not eat and not having the basic equipment for survival was foolishness at best and the emotions of the desire drove away all sense of reason and logic. Thus, he died in a way that was horrible up to that last few days when he was in lala land. Let his desire spark millions more like it but let his foolishness and ignorance spark the desire to learn and prepare before taking that leap of a lifetime.

    I've only seen the movie when it 1st came out...

  • @melissamissingchriscornell2513

    I fantasize at times doing something similar as Chris did...though I would not trap myself in an area of God's beautiful creation in which I would not be able to come back from. I too suffered from a traumatizing childhood. I think the people who view Chris as "mentally ill" or "crazy", are afraid to face their own truths & afraid to go against societal norms. I live amoungst many many ignorant people like this, unfortunately most of us do. I am truly grateful I found this video for I can relate to your empathy & respect for Chris. I currently watch the Into The Wild movie at least once a week, & I am in the process of re-reading both books. Chris's journey towards freedom resignates with me, & I find myself travelling along with him every page I read, every scene I watch. Plus how can you not love Eddie Vedder's beautiful poetry being sung in his low baritone & Native American-like howls. Hauntingly BREATHTAKING...along with the majestic scenery Sean Penn catches in each scene. I wish I would habe stumbled upon the book before the movie, but through the pages is where the gift of imagination can run free. I personally view Chris as a tradgic hero, for his story has helped ,e rid free of many demons that have haunted me since a very young age.

    I never met Chris, but he was from my hometown in Fairfax County, Virginia. A friend gave me the book to read several years ago, and it blew me away when I found out he was from Annandale. When I was younger, I'd had similar aspirations as Chris, so my friend gave me the book to give me a reality check. Watching this really makes me feel sad for Chris and his family. If he'd only taken more time to prepare and learn/practice the skills that he would have needed, this could have turned out so much differently. Learning and practicing the skills could have been a very satisfying part of his adventure.

  • @PeterQuentercrimsonbamboo

    Zu is story always stuck with me, too, ever since I first heard of, and then watched the movie - a sad, yet also soul-filling story and ending for him, yes; nevertheless, it is a story that many of us can feel intimately close to our own hearts;
    no matter the reasoned and logically intellectual 'should have known and prepared better' ... the soul needs to experience and yes, sometimes it can hasten the end, too, in the process of growing -
    Nicely done and well narrated - thank you -

    Remember it?! One of my favorite books. Yes, people need to read his sister’s book, The Wild Truth and see what dishonesty Chris had to survive in his childhood. I can see his need for truth and simple living. It’s so sad that he didn’t know, or didn’t care to know, simple rules of survival, such as how to cross the river when it was high. Brooke, you have such a unique view of his death as you too were starving on your adventure. Every time I read the book, I hope the ending has changed, and Chris is alive this time. He is a symbol of searching for your truth - but it doesn’t always come out well. Be prepared. Thank you Brooke for helping us be more prepared for living in the wild. I have been camping and backpacking for 75 years, yes, started at 3 years of age, but am still learning a lot from you.

    Well done Brooke. Lots of thought about this on your part for sure. I wonder how many other folks have tried this throughout the years in Alaska, especially during the gold rush time, yet they never made headlines or had a book written about them. I just wish people would do a little reading about the country they are about to travel in so as to know what to expect.

    Hey Brooke. While I understand those who are angry he wasn't prepared or experienced and also broke the law, it puts me in mind of a line from a Blood, Sweat and Tears song (When I Die);
    "Give me my freedom for as long as I be.
    All I ask of living is to have no chains on me . . . "
    Thanks Brooke,
    Donna
