Day 3 was a tough one. 10.5 hours of hiking. I throttled it back a bit on days 4 & 5, since I was ahead of schedule. Thanks for following along, Rick!

Awesome, brother. Those little waterfalls and pools looked like fun places to splash around lol.

For sure! So many great swimming holes out there. Still a lil too cold for me to take a full dip, but I’d soak my feet every night & try to wash the funk off! lol

You do a great job capturing the scenery! And yeah, that humidity on the Sunday and Monday was brutal. I ran into a large timber rattler on one of the switchbacks headed down toward Salt Fork Creek which left me a bit paranoid the rest of the day. Good for you on making our mileage and getting across Indian Creek before the rain came in.

Thank you, Catherine. I spent over an hour in Spirits Creek!
Yikes!!! Luckily I didn’t see a single snake the entire trip. Day 3 was tough, 10.5 hours of hiking. Arrived right @ 5pm - ate & passed smooth out.

I ran into a large rattler on that same stretch down to Salt Fork creek this past Wednesday!

Thanks, David. The cold air was welcomed! I apologized to the sun a few mornings for cursing it out the first 3 days. Thanks for watching.

There is a trail that goes through the community I live in here in S.E. KY. Bald Rock KY. The Sheltowee Trace. I was originally from Pope County AR. Love your videos.

@@DixonHikesThe southern end of the trail in Ky and Tenn is rough, rough, rough.

Would’ve loved to camp up there, but had to push on to beat the rain that never showed up. Ha

What are you using for a phone holder as you video?

I’ve been using the Manfrotto mini tripod for the past few years. Kind of limits some of the shots I can get (used to carry a 6ft tripod) but the wide-angle lens really helps with that. It’s held up well, no complaints! Costs around $35 I think.

Thanks for the great video Chris.
I continue to be impressed with the beauty of Arkansas and the great trails (especially OHT and Ouachita Trail).
Question: When you cross a stream/river, do you wear the shoes you are hiking in or something else? I ask because I purchased some Crocs several years ago to use for that and camp shoes. I normally wear Merrell Moabs and while they'd do fine, they'd also stay wet for a good while.
God Bless in the rest of your trip, look forward to those videos.

For this hike I tried some SealSkinz waterproof socks (failed miserably) but I ended up crossing some creeks in just those, to protect my feet from rocks. It really just depends on the trip - amount of days, frequency of creek crossings, early or late in the day, severity of the crossing, whether I cross with shoes on or off. I used to carry water shoes, now I opt for just a camp shoe. Something to slip dry feet in & around camp. I carried a pair of Hey Dude’s (lightweight canvas with memory foam) on both the Ouachita & Ozark Highlands Trail thru-hikes. And let me tell you - they were the MVP of both hikes!

@@DixonHikes Thanks Chris. Sounds like my Crocs will work for both (water crossings and camp).

I see a zillion deer while on the train. Glad you haven’t come across a bear or mt lion or something dangerous lol

I’d LOVE to see a bear, mt lion not so much! Still have yet to see a bear in the backcountry of Arkansas. See ‘em all the time in the Smokies!

Also, how much wildlife do you see out there?

    • @DixonHikes
      @DixonHikes  Před 2 měsíci

Saw a beaver on Day 1.
      2 wild turkeys.
      Countless deer, like 50-60.
Luckily no snakes or wild hogs!
