We Just Lost Our Philippines Apartment

- We’re the Lockwoods and some of you probably know us from our Always Be Changing channel. Even though we have a home - here - in Denver, for more than 3 years, we’ve been traveling the planet to give our kids a more worldly education - and just to experience all the interesting cultures that are outside of the US.
It wasn’t until maybe 15 months ago that we first visited the Philippines and since then, we’ve found ourselves so in love with the people and their 7,000 islands that we’ve just kept coming back. And back. And back. If you haven’t seen our 4-hour episode that features the first 439 days of our Philippines love affair, be sure to check it out.
That love, combined with the fact that our BFFs at the MomDuty channel are settling into a beautiful new apartment in BGC, led us to decide on setting up a second home of our own so that we can spend at least half of the year exploring the Philippines.

After watching all your family adventures, I’m quite surprised that you guys actually want to live in the city. I pictured you guys living in a really nice single family home near the beach where your kids can continue to explore the beauty of the islands. Your son’s fascination of the wildlife was so much fun to watch. Living in the city is just too commercialized. You can live like that in the states. But living on an island should be lived like you’re living on an island. But that’s just my take on that. Whatever makes you happy. Good Luck on finding your home sweet home. Your thoughts are all very accurate! Besides wanting to be next to our best friends, we do still travel the world, so being close to Manila airport is pretty key. As much as we'd love being beachside in Palawan, the extra travel time every few weeks would be inconvenient for our current lifestyle. That said, we are exploring ideas for beachfront real estate with @MomDuty for a bit farther into the future! Thank you 🤗

Only thing I can think of is that the owner probably assumed to not ask since they were able to get 15K over the listed price vs.10K under. Still . . . that is bad business on their part.

We unfortunately deal with similar business minds here in the US. Our real estate transactions may be more transparent, but there are still many opportunistic dealings. @@amgame9489 no we agreed on 90k when it was listed at 100k but the deal she ended up taking after I had the contract notarized was 115k. Also after she told us the unit was ours.

Did the lessor sign your contract, if yes you can still exercise your rights especially if already notarized, its already legal doc

Also, when pronouncing Tagalog words (especially place names), it’s best to assume that the emphasis is on the second syllable when it’s a 3+ syllabic word. There are exceptions of course but not too many.

The owner is not fair here. Your effort, the emotion and time you spent already are just like wasted. No transparency from owner. The owner knows that they sent and you signed the contract already and suddenly like this. If the owner has other business and she/he is like this without transparency, well the business will not succeed! I am so frustrated and kind of annoyed with the owner to be honest!
You are right. No matter the country, culture, and traditions, reneging on a verbal deal without a heads-up is just crappy! But we're optimistic that we'll find something else before Christmas and be just as happy there. Thank you!

This is heartbreaking but I always believe that things happen for a reason maybe God is giving you a sign that you will find something greater. We paid in full the booking for a unit in BGC then within 24 hours the owner decided to cancel without any explanation. I know this does not apply to all Filipinos in general. Hoping that owners be respectful & value integrity. I believe your family we’ll find a better place.

Maybe you can try searching for another condo in Uptown Park Suites since there is Uptown Mall beside it, Landers at the ground floor. International Schools nearby. Still within BGC area but further away from your bestfriends. maybe 10mins away.

I stayed in Colorado, specifically in Fountain for over a year. Have to say, people from Colorado are really nice, especially in smaller towns like Gunnison, Olathe, Julesburg and Loveland. Supposed to stay only 6 months but stayed for 1.5 years. Very warm people these Coloradans.

I’ve watched your 4hr video and here i am. I am so sorry that the owner is so unprofessional. For sure she took the higher offer even though contract was signed. She should compensate you with the money you lost also with that airbnb. She is not liable but it’s the right thing to do. I hope you’ll find that home suitable for you and the kids very soon.

Here in my country once you make a deal to any transaction regarding renting or buying properties, business owner are so very smart that make sure if you really want to take the property you have to deposit right away to close the deal.Then you give the full payment after you sign the contract.Even in any cars or other things that for sale Anyway for sure you will find much huge and better condo for you guys try to search again.Goodluck and hoping you can spend your first Christmas here in Philippines.

Sorry that happened guys. Very unfortunate, they didn’t even let you countered. My family were in the same situation where we started planning our new lives in the house we were about to close when I lost my job. It was devastating, but I know you’ll find something a lot better.

Welcome back to the Philippines. Unfortunately, this seems to be common here. BGC has a good turnover rate so should be able to find something. One thing you need here is a lot of patience. If you want to stay in the capital region, recommend taking a look at Alabang, nice area and may save a little money also.
