FAMILY MATTERS: A TALE OF TWO HARRIETTES
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 07. 2020
- From Perfect Strangers to Family Matters, Harriette Winslow was an integral part in the TGIF line up. She was a loving mother, caring wife, and a quick witted sarcastic one line machine....
And then shockingly halfway into the last season of Family Matters, she was randomly replaced with a brand new actress.

Real quick. Read this before commenting.
1 - I'm aware Harriette started on Perfect Strangers.... that's why I included that info in the video... I feel like a lot of ya'll are watching 3 mins and then commenting trying to beat me to the punch.
2 - I'll have a video out next month explaining why I wasn't as into Martin as a lot of other people. It's probably not for the reasons you think.
3 - I used a clip from Martin in the video to add a visual for the show Martin.... I know that woman in the clip isn't Judyann Elder.... because I have eyes. It was just supposed to represent the show Martin. (I used Martin playing his mother... because that is one of my least favorite parts of the show)
4 - Some of ya'll are trying to tell me Judyann Elder wasn't on Martin. Yes, she was. She played Gina's Mom. Someone wrote that "Nadine Waters" was the actress who played Gina's mother.... "Nadine Waters" was the NAME of Gina's mother.
5 - I can't believe I really have to go out of my way to say this. But me not liking 1 TV show... doesn't make me racist. Wtf?
6 - "Black Full House" was a term coined by Black Friend Alan (another personality on this channel) I really think a lot of ya'll are really going out of your way to be offended.
*That's a shame you had to type that*
What? Some idiot snowflakes accused you of being racist?? WTF???
I'm interested to see why you hated Martin I loved it but I can't wait to see your video
Do one about the Cleveland show sucess do one about Zoey 101 vee
In 2020 if u dont like anything that has a black person youre automatically a white supremacist. #liberaltears
harriet was the initial star of family matters as it was her character which was spun off from perfect strangers.
Yup
Ya, he addressed that at the end
Yeah that's what I found most weird about it. She started playing the character on another show, carried over to her own show and then left near the end.
Oh yeah! I forgot about that!
Carl was on perfect strangers a couple times too. Visiting Harriet at the Chronicle etc.....
The show definitely wasn't the same without Jo Marie Payton.
I agree with you 100 % but They were coming to an end at the time she left. Cause right after they were going into there 9th season she was in half of it and the ratings were dropping. Plus i heard she wanted to write and produce some episodes they wouldnt let it.
You got that right
@@datboyphil I believe that.
@@SassyCarolinaNative yeah that new harriette didnt fit
Same thing with janet hubert and daphne Maxwell on fresh prince
Both women were and are gorgeous, but janet was funnier
Janet got fired after she got pregnant in real life
They were quick to find daphne, tho
“Black Full House” has me rollin. That’s sorta like calling “Friends” the white “Living Single” 🤣😂😅🤔
@None None yeah, because this show had character.
But friends is the white living single lol they literally cancelled living single so the same company could create friends.
That's what Friends really was, if you think about it.
Right!
Shaun Is Gone man you should watch the interviews with the cast of living single. It’s very telling... the show was very popular and the cast recognized that and wanted more. And instead of giving them more they took it and gave it to friends. Crazy lol
Did you really refer to Family Matters as the “black full house”? It was so much better than Full house
Full house came out before and popular shows model get copied and redone all the time there’s tons of copy cats some successful some that failed that’s all
Family matters takes place in the same universe as full house. It’s a spin off of full house cuz the father was in a full house episode before they made an entire show about him and his family
@@keyonrhodes8005 It was actually a spin off of perfect strangers.
Full house! Nah
They both played that sappy-ass piano music during the "tender lesson" moments of EVERY episode
I used to love this show, way better than Full House. I literally don’t remember the second Harriet at all
I remember noticing when these episodes were first airing, I was 10 or 11. It was in the era where they were trying to push Eddie as an R&B star
I do not remember her either😩
like i remember Steve going to space and i remember that being towards the end but I do not remember this woman.😭😭
She's in the episodes where Urkel gains the ability to read peoples minds and finds out that Laura actually does have feelings for him and then winds up dating Laura. Awful episodes
And she's definitely in the ones where Steve goes to space because those episodes are the series finale
Me either
I can't believe what I just heard he don't like Martin omg
😭
Yeah...already let him know we gotta have a convo on that 1...lol
Martin was funny.
yah I could not subscribe after that. Thats freakn heresy.
Girl......I gasped lol.
I mean I'll give him after season three, but the first three seasons?!?!..... BLASPHEMY.
Why did black family sitcoms like Family Matters and Fresh Prince replace the dark skinned mom characters with more light skinned ones? Or is it just me?
That's life
Ask the Producers and Networks that
literally was just thinking of that one. 🤔
Hollywood is racist and pedophile
Coincidence
He's wrong, she played Gina's mother on martin, the lady he showed played Cole's mom
I caught that too. He actually said it right but showed a clip of Miss Laura the comedian.
I KNEW that was the wrong mother 😂
Yes Judy Ann Elder did play Ginas mother on Martin too.
Facts
He said it right though
I remember turning on the final season of Family Matters to see that JudyAnn Elder was Harriet instead of Jo Marie Peyton and immediately turned it off.
me too. i remember one night flipping the channels. saw family matters was STILL ON. saw harriet and said,"nope".
I still watched it but was so shocked the actresses had changed that I thought Carl was cheating on Harriet with this random woman when I saw them kiss, lol. Took me a good long minute to realize they pulled an Aunt Viv on us. Still seems so pointless that they wrote in another character during the final season though. I can only think maybe the producers didn't know that would be the last season? Idk
@@ConsciousCloud I don't think they knew. CBS really made a huge deal about moving the Miller Boyett shows to a new block to compete with TGIF. The new lineup failed so bad that they had to burn off the episodes in the summer. Even though the show seemed to have a proper ending I remember hearing that Steve and Laura's wedding would happen in season 10.
My favorite is aunt Rachel she is like my hard working and a great little sis to my bff Alexander
Ya, honestly I felt the same way, something about CBS and the actor change
Harriet Winslow was my favorite character tbh. She came off as classy, hardworking, and very funny at times. 💕😊 made me feel like I knew her.
The show should have always been primarily about the original Harriet. The whole show Family Matters came about as a spin-off to Perfect Strangers and it was Harriet who worked at the Chicago Chronicle with Larry and Balki.
she was bitter that the show was all about urkel and notm her...and to be honest i dont think she was a great actress same smile laugh every scene...all this said i love the entire cast and show
What'd you say about my Momma???????¿????????? @@DigiBullet23 if you had to compete with goofys like balki and urkel, you'd be bitter too
It was a Friday Night kids sitcom. Kids came to watch Balki. Kids tuned in to watch Urkel and his weekly shenanigans. FM had a good supporting cast with their own jokes: Carl, Waldo, Mother Winslow, Myra etc. Harriett's no-nonsense comebacks just didn't seem to gel as they show became more outlandish and not based in reality. Everyone in school on Friday or Monday would be talking about Urkel or Carl, NEVER about Harriet. The only way I think Harriet could have continued to be funny would've been if grounded Harriet called out Urkel on his many hairbrained schemes. But Carl kind of ended up taking that role.
@@DigiBullet23well if you were given your own show and it basically ends up being about a character who basically was supposed to be a one and done you wouldn’t be pissed off either?
Totally understandable why she was over that character. When you add in the fact that she had been playing Harriet two years prior to Family Matters in Perfect Strangers it makes 11 years total. She was gonna end up being typecast as the feisty 9 to 5 working Black mother if she didn't stop soon. I vividly remember expecting her to be that character when she appeared on other shows when I was younger.
RandomBlackGamer I actually liked JoMarie as Ben Doucette’s receptionist on Will & Grace. There was a scene when she had a stare down with Karen, and after the prolonged silence, Karen said, “I like you.”
She wasn't that feisty on the show
No her TV husband wasn't. Not everyone is typecast. Lol she was on there for 10 years what different is a few months gonna make
@@erickanew Actually she was on there for 8yrs. Family Matters was on ABC 4 8yrs, and was on CBS during the last season. She left the show during the final season. The show was only around 9yrs.
@@akbarthedon218 ok 8 but my point is if she was going to be typecast it would've already happened
Dude that new Harriet Winslow was the actress who played Gina‘s mother on Martin not the actress you showed.
Right!
I was bout to say. Isn’t that coles mother
He stated that he hated the show so I guess when you hate the show you dont take the time to get your facts right lol
Laura Hayes is her name
He must think we all look alike smh
"Why, there is no Jaleel. Only Steve. It's ALWAYS been... STEVE..."
omg you watched the sketch! lol every time i watch anything related to family matters it's all i think about.
Let's not get too feisty, guys. Let's not go down that path.
Key and Peele lol
Personally, my biggest issue with this show was how they wrote off Jamie Foxworths character and made it seem like she never existed in the later seasons.
The issue began in late season 4 when Jaimee Foxworth's mother demanded more screen time for her daughter and more money from the producers. They flat out refused because they wanted more Urkel and Waldo. I think this is the reason they got rid of Judy.
ladyfire44 I think I read something like this before. Just not sure where. Either way, I hate how they did her.
@@ladyfire44Please stop putting Steve in the same sentence as Waldo. He’s no where near Steve. Both are similar but the public prefers Urkel, Waldo is only the fandom favourite.
Obviously Sister Bernadette became obsessed with Carl, killed the real Hariette, and used the same Urkel invention to alter everyone's memories that Urkel himself used to make everyone forget about Judy after he accidentally killed her with one of his experiments. It all makes sense.
That’s actually a good plot for a reunion episode. 😂
Now everything finally makes sense. 😮
@@PiggyPickem For a proper reunion, it would need to be amended to something like Harriette still being alive but her memories were also altered so she didn't remember herself or her family. That way the family could come back together by the end. And if they didn't want to get too dark, they could also have Judy come back, revealing that for some reason she ran away (because the family was ignoring her or something), and she herself erased everyone's memories of her, and even made Steve forget that he invented a memory altering device. Maybe after all these years she regretted it and wanted to reunite with everyone and restore their memories, but when she arrives, she finds that Harriette's an imposter. So she restores memories and everyone works together to find the real Harriette. Then Sister Bernadette goes to prison. But the darker version would be more fun, imo.
Make sense to me
the scary part is Family Matters would have tries the plotline.lol
This show became such an insane acid trip after the first few seasons, I'm kinda shocked most of the cast didn't jump ship mid-way through. It's unfortunate, but there's really only one character people think about when this show is mentioned.
Jump ship when you're making a lot of money? C'mon. Telma Hopkins jumped ship twice but that was to star in her own show. How many of them were getting those kind of offers?
Judy!
True. I don't understand people here in the comments pretending it was a good show. It was hot garbage near the end.
I have only the most vague memories of Family Matters, but I remember being a small child and just calling it "the Steve Urkel show"
@@microbios8586 to be fair, I never used to watch because of the opening credits song, and urkel and waldo and that little kid with the curly moptop and the sassy grandma cliche-but they had heart b!
The Harriet replacement was just as wack as the Aunt Viv replacement. Neither ever got the role of the strong black women who preceded them. And why did they replace a dark woman with a light woman both times???

Oh yeah, the second Helen was played by the actress who played Roxy on Hannah Montana.
Thank god it was only one episode. The replacement Helen SUCKED

JoMarie Patton should never have left the show. She had her reasons as being that she personally got sort of "bored" with doing the same thing over and over, but at this point I feel she should have stuck it out for 1 more season. While the replacement did her job well enough, she was LEAGUES away from having the same chemistry and magic JoMarie had.
Also, she wanted to write and direct an episode but was told "No!"

The 2nd Harriet didn't show up till the last 50% of Family Matters season 9 (the final season) where the show moved from ABC to CBS (most people thought the show was cancelled after it left ABC since CBS did a horrible job promoting that they acquired Family Matters and other TGIF shows like Step by Step. In other words: not many were watching since they thought the show abruptly ended on ABC. ABC is partly to blame as well as they made it seem like the shows abruptly ended, most likely to spite CBS). Also, the last episodes of Family Matters was Urkel doing bat-shit insane stuff (the final two episodes is Urkel literally in space and the Urkel / Laura saga reaching it's 'Infinity War / Endgame" type scenario as the Urkel in space stuff is a two parter). Everything else gets drowned out, especially the new Harriet who doesn't show up on the final episode.
@@johnpenguinthe3rd13 Yes, I Knew Family Matters Ratings Should've Been Higher. I Bet Noone Believe Family Matters Was Cancelled, Because There Weren't Enough People Watching.
Yeah Jo Marie Payton really was the anchor of family matters and its little surprise that the show fell apart once she left.
I mean the show was already falling a part when she decided to leave, that was her reason for wanting out. She felt the show went as far as it could go, and it probably got annoying dealing with Steve all and his antics every single episode
It was her show and it was completely taken from her. It's unfortunate because she could have had a last legacy but it was taken from her

Steve urkel save the show the rumor was the show was planning being cancel after season 1
That's true eh .the first season was missing that comedic spark and I believe that Urkel was it.

@I can't talk I can't enunciate he made cameos in season 1. He was first introduced in episode 4, and had like a 20 sec. scene. He became a regular in season 2. By season 3, the show revolved around his character. Watching it all on HULU.
Than he killed the show when it became all about him heck even Jaleel White hates the Steve Urkel character and says when the Show stop being about the Winslows and started being all about Steve Urkel is when the fans stopped turning into the show.

You may disagree with me Vee and that's fine, but Steve Urkel helped set the show apart from other family sitcoms at the time. I'm surprised that they didn't rename it The Steve Urkel Show. After his debut the show centered around him and the Winslows became his supporting cast! They even had Urkel dolls and board games! You never see the rest of the cast become talking dolls!
I feel real dumb. I didn't even notice two actresses played that part!
Without Steve Urkel “family Matters” is a 3-5 season show!!!
But a better 3-5 seasons that the corny 10
Im good with shows that go to 5 seasons and stop. usually by the 4th or 5th season they decide to change things up and the shows dont feel the same way.
Jo-Marie WAS in the series finale! she was working mission control in plain sight!
Love this channel! Keep up the good work Vee
I had no idea the second Harriet even existed and I used to be obsessed with the show as a kid. It probably means I “grew out” of it after a while? I definitely need to go back and rewatch it all then...for research purposes of course.
That was honestly my first time ever hearing anybody say they hated Martin
I hate it too.
And this is how you know you tv show is iconic: if there are Actual Myths and Misconceptions ,cause a lot of the great Sitcoms have either fan theories ( i.e. The Castaways of Gilligan's Island being The Seven Deadly Sins from Holy Bible) or the show was one or two Misconceptions about it
Not even a minute in, and I died laughing at Steve!
I like Vee, very creative and smart to show how diverse you are with your content
The Winslows weren't fine on their own, Steve basically saved the show from being cancelled at the time
The show was good but Steve Urkel made the show great. Steve Urkel saves the show. Towards the end of the series, Jai White was ready to hang up his suspenders too. Family Matters had a great run. If memory serves me right I believe it outlasted Perfect Strangers?
I agree. Towards the end of the series Jaleel White was looking too buff to be nerdy Steve Urkel. I just wished that the series could've ended with Steve and Laura's wedding.
@@melissacooper4282 there was gonna be a season 10, which was to begin with Steve and Laura's wedding
It was supposed to be Harriet's show. It was a spinoff of Perfect Strangers. I'd feel let down too if I'd gotten my own show and they suddenly made it about Steve Urkel and I barely had any screen time.
Well to be fair, Jaleel white only thought he was coming in for a small part in one episode. The show was goi g to be cancelled until the entire country fell in love with Jaleel after that small cameo. The network saw a way to continue to show, and they saw dollar signs in the Urkel character. So technically it just changed from her show, to his because that was the only way for it to survive. That’s Hollywood.
Yes, it must've really been a shock and a punch in the gut for Jo Marie, especially being a black woman in the 80s. You play a recurring character on a show for a couple seasons, the fans and producers love your character and you're told you're gonna get your own spinoff series about your character's life with her family, only for it to be essentially hijacked by the nerdy, socially awkward, accident-prone neighbor kid. The thing is though, in the 1st 6 seasons there was a pretty good balance between showcasing Steve's antics while still giving the family the focus they needed. I mean they showcased a lot about Carl's life as a cop, Laura going for cheerleading, Eddie and Waldo's friendship, Harriette and Rachel's estranged father, Carl and Harriette's marriage, Eddie always messing up, Laura and Maxine's friendship, etc.
Great info im glad i found your channel
Years later, JoMarie actually made it publically known that she wanted to leave the show alot earlier, around the time when Rachel and Waldo left after Season 7. But, she couldn't as she was under contract and producers didn't want to let her go.
I didn't even realize they'd switched like this till a few years ago, since I only watched the first thirty seasons.
Judy Winslow went upstairs with Chuck Cunningham.
Judy and Chuck both went upstairs and began an interracial relationship!!!
@@scottthorn6858 In which timeline?
@@num1Jaysta Chuck was already upstairs first. So when Judy came upstairs they both realized they shared a common situation ( Both their families neglected them) so they both said F#×k them to their respective families. Then they both fell in love, and spent the rest of their lives together. #CreativeFantasyStoryline
They should have written the character out. Like saying she was visiting Rachel, because Rachel was ill, or maybe her passing away, or written scripts that didn't include her
This is Family Matters we're talkin about here, this is serious business
I don't remember watching this show when it moved to a different station. I didn't know there was another Harriet.
*ima hear vee out on why he hated Martin. I LOVEEEE Martin (it's even my avatar) but if his opinion lines with mines about that show, I'll understand 100% cuz I have certain gripes about that show too sometimes*
I didn't even know there was another "Harriett" 😨😨😨
Family Matters is nothing like full house. Urkel became the center of the show, because he was different and entertaining. Family Matters is the show, I watch reruns all day every day. 😍
Who here remembers when nerdy Steve Urkel became to suave , cool Stephan? 😂
Stefan: Steve? Steve who?
Me:*screams from sexiness*
Laura: steve urkel. You!
Stefan: no, no, no. There is no steve here. I'm stefan, sweet thing. Stefan urquelle!
I never saw show , but nice video bro
That was comedian Laura Hayes in that clip from Martin in the backseat not this actress Judyann Elder.
Loved this!
A lot of people forget right after she left “Family Matters”, she did a few cameos on “Moesha” as Hakeem’s Mom
I loved family matters it's my favorite sitcom and Steve Urkel gave really great advice just like Harriette Winslow
We LOVED this show as kids, but I´m totally with you about the PTSD flashbacks!
I think, it jumped the shark by the time, Stephane was invented.... (Stefan? Stefane? Look, I mean that Steve alter ego, Laura fell in love with, ok! Don´t know how you would spell that....)
All previous Family matters slander aside, that filled the shoes left by the ****y Show for entire generation of kids
WOW I didnt know she played the mother character on Perfect Strangers already before Family Matters ever existed. No wonder when she said when your a baker you dont want to just bake cakes or cookies you want bake pies. She was the beginning of Family Matters. It makes perfect sense.
JoMarie Payton actually played Harriet Winslow for 11 seasons, not 9. Harriet Winslow started out as a sassy elevator operator beginning on the 3rd season of "Perfect Strangers". A lot of "Family Matters" fans forget that fact.
I always like the Darkskin mothers
OMG Stevil creeped me the hell.out as a child!!!!
The walk up the stairs is a trope that a lot of disapearring characters gets said happened to them (Chuck Cunningham Syndrome)
It actually was what happened to a character in 'All My Children' in the 70s, and thus always gets now mistaken for any character that gets sent to Mandyville.
Harriett was actually the Star of the show when it first started. Because it was a spinoff of Perfect Strangers. And she was the elevator operator.
Never knew family matters was actually was a spin-off.
Perfect Strangers was no slouch either. All the episodes are on hulu and dailymotion.
Goes to show how iconic it was
If it wasn’t for Steve urkel this show would’ve been cancels after the first season so urkel saves the show
You know how they say you block out terrible things from your childhood? I honestly don't remember Jo Marie leaving.
Omg the evil Steve Urkel doll😬😬. I really wanted to forget that! Thanks a lot Vee!
