FAMILY MATTERS: A TALE OF TWO HARRIETTES

  • From Perfect Strangers to Family Matters, Harriette Winslow was an integral part in the TGIF line up. She was a loving mother, caring wife, and a quick witted sarcastic one line machine....
    And then shockingly halfway into the last season of Family Matters, she was randomly replaced with a brand new actress.

    Real quick. Read this before commenting.
    1 - I'm aware Harriette started on Perfect Strangers.... that's why I included that info in the video... I feel like a lot of ya'll are watching 3 mins and then commenting trying to beat me to the punch.
    2 - I'll have a video out next month explaining why I wasn't as into Martin as a lot of other people. It's probably not for the reasons you think.
    3 - I used a clip from Martin in the video to add a visual for the show Martin.... I know that woman in the clip isn't Judyann Elder.... because I have eyes. It was just supposed to represent the show Martin. (I used Martin playing his mother... because that is one of my least favorite parts of the show)
    4 - Some of ya'll are trying to tell me Judyann Elder wasn't on Martin. Yes, she was. She played Gina's Mom. Someone wrote that "Nadine Waters" was the actress who played Gina's mother.... "Nadine Waters" was the NAME of Gina's mother.
    5 - I can't believe I really have to go out of my way to say this. But me not liking 1 TV show... doesn't make me racist. Wtf?
    6 - "Black Full House" was a term coined by Black Friend Alan (another personality on this channel) I really think a lot of ya'll are really going out of your way to be offended.

      It was a Friday Night kids sitcom. Kids came to watch Balki. Kids tuned in to watch Urkel and his weekly shenanigans. FM had a good supporting cast with their own jokes: Carl, Waldo, Mother Winslow, Myra etc. Harriett's no-nonsense comebacks just didn't seem to gel as they show became more outlandish and not based in reality. Everyone in school on Friday or Monday would be talking about Urkel or Carl, NEVER about Harriet. The only way I think Harriet could have continued to be funny would've been if grounded Harriet called out Urkel on his many hairbrained schemes. But Carl kind of ended up taking that role.

That way the family could come back together by the end. And if they didn't want to get too dark, they could also have Judy come back, revealing that for some reason she ran away (because the family was ignoring her or something), and she herself erased everyone's memories of her, and even made Steve forget that he invented a memory altering device. Maybe after all these years she regretted it and wanted to reunite with everyone and restore their memories, but when she arrives, she finds that Harriette's an imposter. So she restores memories and everyone works together to find the real Harriette. Then Sister Bernadette goes to prison. But the darker version would be more fun, imo.

She had her reasons as being that she personally got sort of "bored" with doing the same thing over and over, but at this point I feel she should have stuck it out for 1 more season. The 2nd Harriet didn't show up till the last 50% of Family Matters season 9 (the final season) where the show moved from ABC to CBS (most people thought the show was cancelled after it left ABC since CBS did a horrible job promoting that they acquired Family Matters and other TGIF shows like Step by Step. In other words: not many were watching since they thought the show abruptly ended on ABC. ABC is partly to blame as well as they made it seem like the shows abruptly ended, most likely to spite CBS). Also, the last episodes of Family Matters was Urkel doing bat-shit insane stuff (the final two episodes is Urkel literally in space and the Urkel / Laura saga reaching it's 'Infinity War / Endgame" type scenario as the Urkel in space stuff is a two parter). Everything else gets drowned out, especially the new Harriet who doesn't show up on the final episode.

    It was supposed to be Harriet's show. It was a spinoff of Perfect Strangers. I'd feel let down too if I'd gotten my own show and they suddenly made it about Steve Urkel and I barely had any screen time.

    • @ufonious747
      @ufonious747 Před 3 lety

      Well to be fair, Jaleel white only thought he was coming in for a small part in one episode. The show was goi g to be cancelled until the entire country fell in love with Jaleel after that small cameo. The network saw a way to continue to show, and they saw dollar signs in the Urkel character. So technically it just changed from her show, to his because that was the only way for it to survive. That’s Hollywood.

      @musiclover_kb4913 Před 3 lety

      Yes, it must've really been a shock and a punch in the gut for Jo Marie, especially being a black woman in the 80s. You play a recurring character on a show for a couple seasons, the fans and producers love your character and you're told you're gonna get your own spinoff series about your character's life with her family, only for it to be essentially hijacked by the nerdy, socially awkward, accident-prone neighbor kid. The thing is though, in the 1st 6 seasons there was a pretty good balance between showcasing Steve's antics while still giving the family the focus they needed. I mean they showcased a lot about Carl's life as a cop, Laura going for cheerleading, Eddie and Waldo's friendship, Harriette and Rachel's estranged father, Carl and Harriette's marriage, Eddie always messing up, Laura and Maxine's friendship, etc.
