    Really well done man, I think this was a great explanation of how software engineers handle an on-call shift. Hope your channel continues to keep growing!

    Nice Vid , my on-call is 6pm through to 8am for a whole week , so i feel your pain when you get an alert at the end of your shift.

    Another great informational video.
    Thank you for sharing your experience.
    You have no idea how much this help viewer like me to get deeper insight of what’s like to work at Microsoft.
    Keep up the good work :D
    Lol and I take 15 mins nap too. Super effective way to refresh.

      Haha. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think 50% of the fun working at a large tech company is just the office itself. Lots of stuff to do on campus.
      15 minute naps are definitely the way to go. Anything longer usually leads to me sleeping for 4 hours lol

    Your channel popped up on my recommended! I like your content and also work at Microsoft. I think there's a lot of similar minded folks like us on personal finance in teams/yammer

    Hey Ka Tai, 2 questions for ya.
    1- Is it possible to opt out and have someone that's willing to trade oncall assignments; for example A will take B's oncall this week, and B will take A's oncall next week because that week is more convenient for him?
    2- In MSFT do you guys go oncall on weekends also? Is it possible to be required to go on call on Sundays for example?

    Hey, how many hours of actual code on avg per day?

    • @kataiho4405
      @kataiho4405  Před 3 lety +1

      It varies a lot depending on what I am working on. If I had to guess I would say maybe 4-5 hours a day. (writing, testing, and debugging code) Some days I have a lot of meetings and there isn't a lot of time to code. There are also other random things that I need to do throughout the day such as: investigating some issue, reviewing pull requests, helping or getting help from a colleague, and the occasional random training that I was supposed to do 2 weeks ago :)
      As people get further along their career I think they code a lot less. You naturally become more involved with design and lead projects which ultimately just means you are in a lot more meetings.

    On Call is stressful in general, how is it in Microsoft?

    • @kataiho4405
      @kataiho4405  Před 3 lety

      I think it varies a lot between products and teams. Anything that is directly related to customer experience is definitely stressful. Luckily I’m not on-call often which is mostly dependent on your team size.

      I am on-call around 4 times a year which is really nice. I can't say the specific team but I work in the Office org.

    Do you get paid while being on call even if you don’t do anything?

    • @kataiho4405
      @kataiho4405  Před 3 lety

      Good question. I do not get paid extra for being on-call. Whether I do a lot or do nothing at all. I am sure there are other roles or companies that pay extra for being on-call. I would assume for those type of agreements you get paid regardless even if nothing happens.

      @kataiho4405  Před 2 lety

      No, there is no extra pay :(
      Some people can get lucky and join a team that has no or very light on-call though.
