When CPR Doesn't Work

  • This is a difficult topic to tackle for most. Whether you're a licensed paramedic, family member, neighbor, or stranger, the question remains the same for many people: Why didn't CPR work?
CPR is an attempt to make up for circulation in the heart that is not happening normally. CPR does not stop the dying process; it simply slows down biological cell death. The hope is that this procedure can buy time for EMS to arrive to try other methods of restoring proper circulation of oxygenated blood throughout the body to buy even more time so that the underlying reason why the person went into cardiac arrest in the first place can be explored. If CPR doesn't work, remember, you gave that person that best chance of survival.

I just cried. I got an alert on an app called goodSAM which is linked to the ambulance service in New Zealand to help someone as the ambulance was further away than me; I am an advanced first aider. This happened last night and I haven't slept. It was a 3 month old baby dead on the floor when I arrived and I tired my hardest I was praying while I did the CPR until the paramedics arrived but he didn't make it. Im crushed with guilt, sadness and going over and over in my head if I did it right. I cannot let go of it and this video has given me closure. I did not know this person but after the CPR I realised how much I care and love humans no matter what. I will never forget this day. Thank you for some closure and for this video, I can now go to sleep at ease knowing I did everything in my power but it was in gods hands in the end. Despite this I am greiving for a stranger and their family.

As a former cpr instructor, I've performed cpr 2x prior.
Last week I had to perform it on a friend and co worker. Fought the fight of my life.. obstructed airway hindered restoring o2.
He will be his donating organs today.
    I needed this video

Fantastic video, and you really come across as a great human being. I've not yet had to give CPR but my biggest fear with it is the casualty dying and me worrying that I did something wrong, or didn't do it well enough. This video is a huge help. The casualty is virtually dead already, so as long as I do my best then that can only be a good thing. Thanks for this!

Right on preach it brother. My initial CPR training was 30 y/ago, but I’ve watched refresher vids. I’m going to take another hands-on class, but in the meantime, if the situation comes up, I’m going to go for it and do my best.

Just performed CPR today and the patient died. Man I didn’t imagine the trauma from it but this video really gave me some peace. Still having a issues with it a little bit more about the circumstances and feeling like I could have maybe prevented it if I was faster I could have stopped the fall that caused it. What a crazy experience.

Thanks for the vid. One of the best spoken video's that explains even when it seems hopeless that it's worth 'trying' even if it doesn't seem like it. Thanks man! It still sucks when it doesn't work but at the end of the day. None of us get off this rock alive... it's just the timing!

Thank you for making this video. I performed CPR on an unresponsive choking victim last week. He was revived at the hospital or en route, but ultimately died due to hypoxia.
I haven't been able to sleep for a week and am having flashbacks and sadness. I have no one to talk to who understands how I feel. Others say how wonderful it was that I did it, but I didn't feel wonderful at all when someone I cared about was dead underneath my compressions. It was traumatic and nightmare.
I tried with every fiber of my being but had to tell the family it wasn't good enough.
Your video brought me to tears. I am glad you made it. I wish I saw this sooner. I can't turn off the feelings of sadness I have yet, but knowing someone else knows how I feel helps.
Thank you for all you do and God bless your wife and six kids.

Did cpr on a guy that collapsed next to me, and he's certainly dead. I have no clue if it's affecting me. But, it helps knowing that I'm helping make a chance rather than helping them survive.

Dude, went to a job off duty on the way home from work. Went to assist in CPR however there were already 4-6 people assisting. Best I could do was direct incoming appliances/police as the exact address was unknown. I rang dispatch and told them to step it up, it was still a good 15 minutes before proper equipment got there. I won't say it was a 'waste of time' but we need to do better! It just sucks. It's crap but we still need to at least try!

I remember hearing somewhere that even with perfect CPR, a person will still die 9 times out of 10. All CPR does is either give your body time to try and fix itself, or allows time for a defibrillator to arrive to stop the heart so it can try and get back into a rhythm.
Also, I’m fairly sure that defibrillators don’t restart the heart, but rather do the opposite. They try and turn a quivering, irregular heart rate into a flatline so that the body can try and get a proper heart rate back.
CPR doesn’t bring a heartbeat back, it just replicates it fairly poorly in the hopes it comes back. It’s unfortunately not some miracle cure, but rather something that hopes for a miracle. Even though it more likely to not work, it’s always better to attempt it than not.

Just wondering if there is a way we can estimate how hard can we do chess compressions on different individuals (Adult, child, boy girl, elderly, etc.)
It seems that I always either underestimate or overestimate my strength. People will always complaint that my normal grips (ex. handshake) almost dislocate their fingers or broke their hands. If I am too conscious and worried that a person is too delicate, like back massage on a woman - they will complaint that they do not feel anything and when I slightly adjust a little it is too hard.

I’ve done CPR about 50 times (yes on real people) and rarely do we get them back. It depends on how long they are down before CPR is started and why they went into cardiac arrest. As a medic we rarely get them back because families don’t usually do CPR before we arrive unfortunately. My youngest patient was a 22 week premie and a 3 year old child. His head was run over by a car. It’s rarely successful like in the movies. I’ve lost track how many times I’ve done it.

I had to give CPR to my dad who had a sudden cardiac arrest ... out of nowhere. I thought he was snoring and went in to check when I found him unconscious, I couldn't feel the pulse and he wasn't breathing...I called screamed for mum and called an ambulance right away, we put him on the ground and I started cpr right away with the dispatcher guiding me ... I tried .... and I tried and I kept going till the ambulance arrived ... he was getting blue and I knew it wasn't good ... but I failed, I didn't save him and I can't shake the feeling of me doing something wrong ... I couldn't save my own father and it keeps eating at me ... maybe I did something wrong, and it's my fault ... im trying to ignore it but I keep having nightmares of it happening over and over again, waking up covered in sweat and in tears ... thanks for this video. I need it.
