as much as we all have our fav NIN era, i'm stoked to see him and his band/family continue to experiment and evolve through the decades while working with younger artists to hone their craft while helping bring newer artists to everyone's ears. sign of a true artist.
EDIT: Having listened to Halsey's album a number of times now, having known of her but not heard her music, i can without a doubt say i know *why* Trent & Atticus agreed to work with her. Her own craft is immense & transcends the bounds of terms like pop, rock, punk, whatever, much like NIN does, which is what i loved about Trent's collaboration album with Saul Williams some time ago as well, but i digress.
Halsey didn't *need* to be uplifted by Atticus & Trent, her talent speaks for itself, but the three working together on an album like this is wonderful, and makes a mockery of some commenters claiming they sold out, or she's "just" a pop singer. this album is not designed for radio play and chart-topping. it has its catchy moments, sure, but it's so much more. give it a good listen - with great headphones - before rushing to judge the work and the motivations of people who created it. peace.

Couldn't of Said it better my self. I would really like to Trent and the collective that has become Nine Inch Nails get to re do their Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Induction. The Whole Covid thing really gave them the shit end of everything. TRENT has never been one for awards or anything like that but I truly believe that they deserve such a better ceremony than what they got. I love what they did and how they all handled it and it honestly was was entertaining listening to all them. But Trent deserves the big ceremony for being inducted with all the people, the music, having another artist give an amazing speech on the impact of NIN. What Trent did for the Clash is on their Induction night was incredible. And they deserve the same. I'd really like to see that all re done. I'm sure I'm not alone on this opinion.

We definitely need artists like Trent and Atticus in the industry.
Not only they make great music, both in NIN as well for cinema, but they're probably the only ones who didn't sold themselves out to Hollywood for just a few quids.
In a jaded, plastic and fake industry such as that of Hollywood, where it doesn't matter what do you know but WHO YOU KNOW, we need people like them who are not "sucked" deeper into the system.

Word!!! Back to the basement w/ all the 808's. I remember Reznor telling us he was scrambling just for guys to go on the road and open for Meat Beat Manifesto. The place they played in B'more was a little shithole we hung out at whether it was a show or not. Back in the day when all the regulars stayed to help the bands carry their shit out. Not the best for Reznor, but awesome for us. 85-95 was a sick part of my life when it came to music and the shit it lucked out with. I remember my buddy barely getting Alain Jourgensen back to the tour bus on A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste Tour and they opened with0 "Breathe" and when the drum intro gave way to the guitars cutting, it was like the entire club hovered off the ground, the energy was NUTS, and everyone was cool, collectively one ball of fire. Shows like NIN and ministry happening at the same time PE and the S1W's were touring with the Beaties and N.W.A. and Tribe back then and most of all the same people were at all the same shows. I can understand how he could be humble, and generous, and still seeking. It's what artists do, be it on a grand stage or with piles of it in their garage, for many it's not a choice, just a matter of fact. I thought that last project he put out was really Dope, I knew old fans wouldn't wouldn't be into, but we already have that ... we don't know what comes next, and that's what makes some of these dudes rad to me personally. Yet, it's just my humble opinion, and as an "Elder of the Tribe", I can only try to pass down some knowledge as I can. I hope ya dig it Homie!!! ✌️

Actually, I always felt it was Trent that helped David's career.... Bowie at the time was experimenting with a more electronic style/sound that was totally evident with the release of Earthling; however, the Earthling album (one of my favorite albums) was sadly over looked by most music fans.... Trent getting involved with David's next album Outside made a huge difference in Dave's popularity essentially introducing him to a whole new, younger audience especially in America.... Lost Highways Deranged was epic.... Trent also helped Gary Numan and Adam Ant too.... Trent is a legend.... 😊

After hearing the album and now, watching and enjoying this sit down with the artists holy hell I’m a 46 year old diehard NIN fan who also completely fell in love with Halsey. She is incredibly deep, charming and REAL. Forever fan here, Hals. Trent and Atticus saw her light from the vet go. 🔥

I’ve been a NIN fan for 25 years or so and I’ll admit I rarely take to a new album of theirs immediately. It takes time to absorb. But one thing I do love is the evolution of style, sound, themes, etc. Every time I have that everything must sound like Broken or TDS moment I think of Year Zero, Add Violence or Gone Girl OST. Never been a Halsey fan but this album is really good. Kinda get a fragile meets hesitation marks sound with for once an album with something to say.

It was really nice to hear them talk about their creative and collaborative process, about authenticity and how to be good parents in the midst of all that. This is something my husband and I have had to navigate as artists and parents. You don't have to lose your autonomy in parenting on purpose, you just have to become more disciplined about your time and everything you do. Your identity becomes more solid through that discipline.
I love how Halsey said, "You don't have to compromise morally to rage creatively." And I loved how Trent was nodding and feeling relatable in regards to parenthood just knocking you off your ego kick and also how he's been there when Halsey was saying how she feared her fans who could relate to her as a wreck might not like her as a happy person.
The time I fell in love with Trent was standing in stadium as a teenager who had lost a lot of people in my life, hearing him sing about how "Everyone I know, goes away in the end," and just being floored with emotion because FINALLY, someone knows how I feel! But I also remember very specifically standing in a stadium years later, listening to NIN on the With Teeth tour (after years of relating to Trent's angst and pain as a young person) and hearing him make the decision NOT to end with Hurt and ending on an uptick, going home and journaling, "If Trent Reznor can find happiness, there's hope for the rest of us." And I did, find happiness. When Halsey said she thinks her fans like to see her happy, it's true. I loved seeing my idol of relatable pain, Trent, find his way and become happy and turn into an awesome, responsible man, standing in his power and still creating. I loved how he spoke about having that own realization for himself watching Bowie!
Great interview! I felt like this was one of the most raw and intriguing interviews addressing the artist/family dynamic I've ever heard. We've been told that to be creative, you have to sacrifice family, but these 3 people whom I respect as artists are saying, that's bullshit. I also loved how Trent said true art honors where you stand right now, not who you were 10, 5 or even 2 yrs ago.

i grew up on alternative rock bands, including Nine Inch Nails. My dad always had these bands playing in the car and we'd run through an entire CD anytime we were going somewhere. So this type of music has always held a special place in my heart, it's at my roots. I love many different genres of music, and it's why i love Halsey so much cause she really has a good range from album to album. But to hear this album...one of my favorite, if not my FAVORITE artist's music in this realm of alt rock, is the best thing to ever happen to me. This is making my dreams come true. I've longed for the day that i could find another artist/band in modern music who fulfills the same feeling i get from bands like NIN, MCR, Sum 41, The Offspring, Greenday, etc.
Halsey will always be a favorite artist of mine because she is so un-apologetically herself and speaks her mind, she'll fuckin scream her mind if she needs to, and i love that! You can 100% tell she is rock n roll, this is the sound she's always strived for. It doesn't sound fake, it feels beyond genuine. I go to work and leave EAGER to play this album on my ride home and just scream the words to Easier Than Lying, vibe out to Lilith, rock my head to Lighthouse, sing my heart out to I am not a woman, Im a god...this album is so special.

My best work is when I'm sad. I could relate so much when she mentioned that in her discussion. Also, I agree that an artist should not change for anyone in creating of their art. Put out what you feel. And don't think so much what others say to do or how to create one's own work. This is very important. Sure we want our fans to like it. But I agree that one should stand by their own happiness when it comes to creating. You had good role models whom helped you in the creative process. And I love that you stood by how you felt. Again, this interview was amazing in the sense that it helps inspire others in their own writing. I can't wait to hear the album. Great interview everyone!!! 😎🤘🔥🎶💀🖤

I've never heard Halsey as I'm not a big pop fan and the concept of the album is definitely weird for me, but despite that, I really enjoyed hearing what she had to say. I appreciate the way she's viewing the art: as kind of a dark, personal thing, a way to convey complex feelings. It's not pretty or sexy, it's kind of weird and uncomfortable, but it's cool and meaningful, and that's much of what art is about to me. And it's always nice to see how Trent & Atticus are doing.

I Love this conversation, the insights shared, authenticity of moving thru personal conundrums and changing self/identity/ego...as it relates to art, creativity, personal development, and making music - but to do so with brilliant minds such as Trent and Atticus in the mix...whoa! This is special - as is the album!! ❤️⚡️⚡️⚡️

That would be iconic. They could use a “back to their moody” roots album, prob Trent would also talk them into getting Alan back for some tracks.

Long hair can be harder to deal with and keep it looking nice as you age, I think his short hair looks fine.

I didn’t really know anything about Halsey before I heard this record as a 40-yo NIN fan but I love this record so much and I am really impressed by her insight and emotional honesty in this interview.

I've lived multiple lifetimes, in this one. Trent and company have been the soundtrack for many of them. Became a Halsey fan a few years back, love her writing, and her instrument. Literally stumbled across this tonight, and I already need it, without hearing a single note. Much love, to us all.... may our pain, and growth out of it, be a beacon to all, still in the shit.
