What does a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) actually do?

  • A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has a very complex task when using video technology in a football match. There are four match-changing situations where a VAR can be used in clear errors. There is a VAR protocol in place to govern the use of video technology, signals, communication and how the VAR can implement this technology.

    VAR's are people who scream at their TVs: "THAT WAS A PEN REFF!" and something actually happens

    We need this. Big games are getting decided by bad referee calls. This can not be the case in this day and age where the technology is cheap and easy to install. You know how much money the actually play for? it's insane that it took so long for them to realise that. It doesn't "change" the game at all. sure he'll take a couple seconds extra to make to call, but those will be added to the extra time. It makes acting or diving much more noticeable and will eventually be the reason that diving will most likely disappear. THIS IS A GOOD THING

      5 years later and zero improvement. You think it gets better, it's only ruining the game. The reserve effect of what I was hoping it would do.

    On the bright side, if the referee on the field is not sure, or didn't see it clearly--bad angle, etc., the VAR can be consulted with confidence.
    For example, a penalty kick can be dismissed if the VAR clearly sees it was not a deliberate handball.

    Need to give DT's of each team a couple of options per game to raise a flag and request the use of VAR particularly when the ref is indecisive. Just like they do in American Football.

      Craig McIntosh football fans think they understand all the rules... You have to take the hours of classes to be able to call these correctly, and these refs have more than that. Refing football is hard.
      Source-am football referee (from america) VAR is easier, but they still have to know every situation possible, because it could always be checked.

      Yo Mate lol really? I'd rather have a game with perfectly fair calls rather than a game marred with wrong decisions any day of the week. Sure, it might take away some amount of thrill, but I don't want my team being wrongly robbed of a goal etc

    • @thesurgeon6473
      @thesurgeon6473 Před 6 lety +11

      Losing the "controversy" is in no way a bad thing. As for the emotions, I just don't get that argument. Football isn't "all about emotions", it's about trying to get the ball in the net fairly. Are you seriously suggesting that if a World Cup was won with a goal that used VAR, the fans of that team wouldn't celebrate because the emotions were lost?

      Aditya Ramesh We're human. We should make mistakes. Thats why people love football and hate it sometimes. If the ref constantly goes to see the replay the game will not be so entertaining. Just remember we're human and we aint perfect.

    • @adityaramesh5281
      @adityaramesh5281 Před 6 lety +6

      Yo Mate brooo I am not getting your logic. How is humans not being perfect a good thing? What you're saying is true, and just for the sake of thrill or controversy, you can't have a team that has worked hard being robbed off of a win. I'll give you a example. France vs Ireland WORLD CUP QUALIFIER LAST GAME. Ireland were going through. 2 minutes left. Thierry Henry handballs and France score. Blatantly clear handball. Ireland lost the chance of going to World Cup. If VAR was there, Ireland would have gone through no doubt. So you're telling me the emotions and hard work of the Irish is of no significance as it provides more controversy and thrill? Not a nice way to think
