Sergey Brin: Why Google Glass?

- It's not a demo, more of a philosophical argument: Why did Sergey Brin and his team at Google want to build an eye-mounted camera/computer, codenamed Glass? Onstage at TED2013, Brin calls for a new way of seeing our relationship with our mobile computers -- not hunched over a screen but meeting the world heads-up.

I love the reason they got invented too. People were too obviously occupied with their modern phones, so they made them into glasses so you can still be just as occupied with your little machine, but at least it looks like you're paying attention to the people around you.
An old Nokia phone solves all those problems. You can basically only make calls and send messages with them. Nothing more. When you've sent your friend a message you put your phone down because you can't do anything else with it. It's genius, really. They were before their time.
i want this to happen fr
@@stevethea5250 apple will release consumer enhanced ar glasses in the coming years

"Ok glass, teach me presentation skills."
‘The duo gave up control …’ no, not at all.
‘They gave up daily management’ is more accurate.

They didn’t give up control at all, they just gave up the responsibility.

What a long ad. Ok where is the ted talk?
+Russel Walker One wonders.

Please wake me up after the ad ends. Thank you.

Well lets face facts Serge. This is so you can stream ads into the fabric of our consumerist existence.
Do they have these in prescription varieties for those who already have glasses.
it's an amazing video!!what's the song in the short movie?
I know, right?! The first thing I do is turn off annotations when those annoying thumbnails are embedding into the video.
So now that google know absolutely everything about us, they now want to see what we're looking at?
Aw, I don't think this deserves any downvotes. What's your problem? I mean, I just skipped the video at the beginning - I've seen it before. His talk afterward was short, but good.
But this isn´t like 'advertising' it´s just another TEDtalks video that shows a Google product.
He's the co-founder of Google, I think describing him as the "next" anything is a bit of a confusion
my new beliefs are that the're trying to force directly to your face what was optional looking at you're phone.
What is battery size, how long will it last?
its not paranoia, they already monitor the internet
What the hell is everyone complaining about? It's a new technology showcasing new ides. You could almost call every single TED talk an advertisement...
As he said, its a step in a certain direction from which they learned a lot. But I'm not convinced glass as it is will be as huge as some media try to hype (including their own marketing team). I must say I like his points and the energy with wich he talks.. Good talk imo
With the 1 month i have had the glass protoptype I have met more people and done more things than the past year.
That's a bit sad actually.
Tim Lavey You couldn't be more wrong. Glass has actually forced me to get out of my comfort zone to do things and meet people I normally wouldn't have engaged. For being an 'artist' you are pretty closed minded. I use glass all the time on photoshoots, drawing from a first person perspective and exploring how this tech will change smart phone tech. While I am doing that, you are sculpting boobs.
Nothing wrong with that job lol
Used to have a huge amount of respect for TEDTalks until this 7-minute ad for Google's latest gadget. What the hell.
How much time did this guy put into planning his speech? a few seconds?
Anyone know the song title?
Google Glass is the tech that was ahead of its time.
That video has been up on CZcams for some time.
This is 'Ted-Director' - A Director View point, which is clearly what this video is about - not to sell glasses.
The extra small screen on the screen during the intro is already annoying me, I can't imagine how distracting and troublesome the actual glasses will be. Imagine a having a screen in the corner of your eye all the time, you'd probably get headaches. I am glad that there is a seperation between all these networks and real life. They don't need to be integrated.
does it come in prescription?
If other people are wearing google glass can they film you without your knowledge or permission? What will this do to privacy?
Can't agree more with you.
Why's there so much hate. Calm down people! No one is forcing you to buy it. And when it comes out it won't be more expensive than a smart phone.
audiobooks?
I'm not saying that Google Glass sucks. Its just that TED talks shouldn't advertise products no matter what. TED is should be about motivating us...
a single instance is not enough to disprove my claim, invalid counterexample, error, error
Am I wrong, or was the music during the first 2+ minutes, OK Go, the guys who made the video for "This Too Shall Pass" into a giant Rube Goldberg device?
Perhaps he should have talked about the product more or was it a scam to get us intrigued.

GLASS, what's his power level? Its over 9000!!!!!!
Que Saudades Morzaooooooo! *!♥★♡♥♥♥♥♡! *!
What about using it to monitor a surgery ... and consult?
Or maybe they just thought the T in TED stands for technology and Google Glass is some cool technology?
Because it was a talk given at TED. Ergo, it is a TED talk.
The minimun price will be $800.00, at least.
This is perverse. The assumption that all of our movements, actions, experiences are so profound that they demand an instant digital imprint is ludicrous. This is the epitome of narcissism and hollowness. The integration of technology and body could be profound but but like this.
+imma Smith well said. glad this stupid project is dead. all of those self-absorbed douchebags can jam those stupid videos of their sky jumps and white water rafting up their assholes.
also imagine actually using that thing like they did in that video...you would brake it in a week... rip 1500$ down the drain :(
Not really, nobody is suggesting every movement / actions / experiences are recorded or broadcast, a device that's on your person like the glass simply gives you a more instant access to the ability to do so should something worthwhile arises, or when information is needed without having to be interrupted and look down at a small rectangle, whether it's in the form of Google glass or other device is inevitable, trouble is the glass was similar to VirtualBoy, the technology just wasn't there yet to implement the ... err, vision they had.
Well, they are important. Each moment is also a moment that could be the last moment, and if it's the result of a crime that scene will get recorded. This would have been a deterrent against attacks, but yes people are too obsessed with privacy which has long been dead.
Why did TED uploaded an 7 minutes long add?
Something tells me the screen on the top right is gonna be smaller.
yeah and he spontaneously made a montage showing off the storng points of his product, probably while walking onto the stage...
This is an advertisement, thinly veiled as a tech-demo
what a conclusion...
If this keeps up, they need to change TED into TEDHai, as in "Half assed infomercial".
I want to try :)
He's done an amazing job with Google, however he should never pitch his products again.
Sorry to say that the bgm at the opening is very annoying .
5 years have passed, where is that Glass?
Sorry bro it's 6 now 😂😂😂
"OK Glass, I am talking out loud to a machine on my face and people are looking at me like I'm psychotic, give me something I don't have to speak aloud to operate"
ooooooooh ok right.. i was thinking it was more of an advertisement
Rrright, it's much more social to look at a picture-in-picture all day doing anything but communicating with your surroundings. It's actually just as anti-social as looking at your phone all day. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with being connected all day.
I can almost imagine the way you talk... you sound just like Sergey Brin.
HOW MUCH?
"To see you better, Red Riding hood".
I'm so glad you got my point. Yes, when you have a point of view you need to sell it to people. You fail to explain at all how it is different and expect me to just realize how obviously different they are when of course, I've already established that I don't see it that way. I think you simply missed the point of view here and I'm not saying whether he succeeded in selling it. I really don't care what YOU subscribed to see. If being an ad is so obvious then why do people point it out?
Might be fun for people who travel a lot.
Then you missed the point. The *product* was the thing that gave the talk. Sergey was just there as a prop.
It isn't for replacing for your phone. It is an extension, an accessory.
I could focus my multimedia presentation around what I'm saying... or I could just bring a video and wing it for three minutes. Play the video again while I'm talking so that they can't focus on what I'm saying.
Anyone who says this was an add is wrong. he had some pints. he glass will stop people from hiding behind their phones when people are around. it will make life so much easier. He even said he did not want to talk about the glass but how they got the idea. Also why would you not want to watch a vid on the Google glass. It is one of the coolest creations.
It will not cost $1200 when it releases and is mass produced.
It reminds me of the movie The Final Cut starring Robin Williams.
It isn't an ad!
By the way if you have Siri there is no reason to look at your phone for many reasons. Text, email, calls, etc.
Why is this in Ted? It's nothing but a seven min ad to sell Google glass.
You mean the privacy you don't have since if glass can see it, so can someone else? You're missing everything.
Will left town a long time ago.
Woahh I didn't know glass was this cool
Thats why brin was wearing them all the time
But who wouldn't wanna try it out?
Why not?
What happened to Sergey and Larry ?
Other products advertise on TED all the time... this one is under flame because it's a big one (ie Google)
If this didn't belong to a major company, but was the product of an independant, would you still think this ? If you forget for a moment this belongs to google, you'll find this video is of usual TED quality :]
forget about Glass. What happened to Nexus7 2?
Great advert ted..
Could the glass be used underwater and on space exploration/spacewalk?
At least if you're doing an ad, find a better talker.
I didn't realize TED was now an open forum for showing commercials.
I heard this talk was spontaneous, which explains why it's not so well presented.
yayy now I can watch por.... I mean.. youtube while driving or while in a meeting..
First CZcams ads,now Ted`s ads.
Whats next?
this could've been the basis of a great TED talk, but alas....
Can't really argue against that.
Ever heard of go pro?
I saw a SMOSH video about Google Glass I didn't realize it existed O_O I want one...
This has been uploaded before I think...
There is another design on the glass that clips onto your presciptions.
Agreed
It would be cooler if Glass made the computer noises from Star Trek TNG.
So you can do a ted talk but I can’t?! The cheek of you
Back at ted? And I can’t even get close to my own community.
google is gonna be really mad seeing meta smart glasses on everyone's face in 2024
Can u have in front of your vision but not visible from the other side, a HUD for Better words
AM PRACTICALLY HOMELESS ARE WE IN THIS TOGETHER GOOGLE 2.
Which only goes to show that being the co-founder of Google doesn't mean you can present well.
Google Glass filmed with GoPro... People are just getting used to cellphones and how to handle them (socially) and now they throw a new gadget into the mix?... I don't know.
